Top Cowboys Win Prizes In Rodeo Show

Ernie Mutch Browning Bill Schall Arlee and Ora Zum Walt Augusta led the top prize winners in saddle bronc bareback and calf roping at the Choteau rodeo this week. Overflow crowds filled the arena for Wednesday afternoon performances with about 56 500 attendees across both shows and 3 400 paid admissions Wednesday. Two injuries occurred first night Vern Meeks and Dave Shipp were hospitalized but recovering. Second day reportedly the better show with more spirited riding and roping despite a noon thunder shower that dropped 20 inches of precipitation.

Fine Floats Entered in Big July 4 Parade

An estimated crowd of more than 7 000 spent the Fourth of July in Chateau as a two mile parade featured scores of floats and four musical groups. Judges praised at least a dozen entries as nearly as fine as the winning float by the Chateau girl scouts, a 2 000 rose swan with the Be Prepared slogan and flags of the United States United Nations girl scouts and brownies.

Car Wrecks With Youths As Occupants

A 1933 Ford coupe carrying Russell La Fromboise of Great Falls and Don ald Carrier of Choteau, both 17, skidded on Belleview road last Friday. The car overturned twice and rested in a ditch 128 feet from the skid. Both youths were hospitalized in Choteau but were released early this week. No other vehicles were involved.

Hospital records show patients admitted including Ole Rustand Choteau Dave Shipp Augusta Vern Meeks Missoula Emil Reiner Geraldine and several others. Birth announcements include a son for Bud Moulton and a daughter for Martin Hanson and a son for Joe Buresch. Discharges include Bud Moulton and baby son Dupuyer and others.

Rebekahs Hold Memorial Rites at Billings Assembly

The Chateau Rebekah Lodge hosted a candle light memorial service during the 53rd Rebekah Assembly in Billings. About 300 Rebekah members from Montana attended, along with 40 visitors from Canada and several U S states. National and Sovereign leaders from Philadelphia and the Patriarchs Militant officiated and lauded the program for its quality. Mercedes LeDesky chaired the staff, with Doris Hansen and Elmore Lar among program participants.

Corporal Describes Korean Front Woes During Furlough

Corporal Alvin Kuehn of the 1st Marine Division 7th Regiment returned to Greenfield for a 30 day leave before reporting to Barstow depot. He landed at Inchon September 15 1950 and fought around the Chosin Reservoir and Yalu border enduring deep snows and subzero temperatures. He survived as one of 37 from a 245 man company, never wounded, and shared memories of a mountainous Korea with rice farming civilians. He is from a large Greenfield family. his father Gust Kuehn died in a dynamite accident last July.

Fairfield Woman Dies in Great Falls Hospital

Mrs. Howard Wiederrich aged 29 of Fairfield died Friday at a Great Falls hospital after a long illness. Born April 7, 1922 in Havre she lived in Fort Peck and Fairfield and married Howard Wiederrich in 1941. She worked at the Great Falls air force base during World War II. Survivors include her husband three daughters her parents and three brothers.

L. E. Taylor remains confined at home this week and is reported to be improving. Dr. and Mrs. Roy Randall and family from the University of Minnesota were guests for several days last week of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Boussard. Dr. Randall was a classmate of Dr. Boussard.

Continental Oil Leases Area Near Bynum to Pendroy

Continental Oil Co plans a new leasing block along and west of the state highway between Bynum and Pendroy after a months long geophysical survey by National Geophysical Co. Multiple Madison limestone oil shows were found in earlier cry holes. some wells later acidized. Sunray Oil works near Aga wam on C K Malone ranch with Madison target around 1900 feet. General Petroleum dug a sump on Henry Rauscher farm north of Agawam and drilled to 4522 feet with a rotary rig finding light De vonian shows and gas in perforations.

June Precipitation and Hail Hit Chateau and Dutton Areas

June rainfall at Chateau ran 2.65 inches versus a 2.98 inch historical mean, with 60 year records showing a .33 inch deficit. Hail from a noon shower east of Chateau damaged winter and spring wheat crops, reportedly affecting farms including Wayne Proff and Allen Odden.

Red Cross First Aid Classes Begin Next Week

Adult first aid course starts Tuesday night July 10 at 8 p.m. in the courthouse. The 18 hour program runs twice weekly plus a 4 hour civilian defense segment. Attendance urged for all interested, with school bus drivers required to enroll.

Reverend A Bernard Gravdal and his family were honored at Trinity Lutheran Church in Chateau for the pastor’s 10th anniversary of service. Choteau Wins Baseball Tilt From Bynum

The Choteau Independents earned their first win of the season by defeating Bynum 7 to 1 at Legion Ballpark. Duane Reisch pitched six innings with two hits allowed while Lyle George closed with three hitless innings. Herb Kessner led batters with six of seven at bats including three doubles and three singles.
