A Montanan farmer reports weather halting fieldwork after a light week, weed control concerns forcing rye and wheat reduction, and comments on wheat parity payments delays. He critiques agricultural policy, John's secretary Wickard, scrap rubber drives, bond campaigns, and contrasts Mrs. Roosevelt's influence with ordinary workers.
Helena internal revenue collector Lewis Penwell warns that starting July 1 all vehicles bearing Montana licenses must display a $5 auto use stamp or face summons to the revenue office. Stamps are available at post offices and the Helena office. the stamp must be affixed to the lower right windshield and may include vehicle data for theft prevention and gas rationing tracking.
A historical tire issuance record lists multiple customers and quantities. Names include J. H. Byler, Jack Slanger, Vincent Waid, Therman Bros., Glen Morris, J. GC. Peters, Conrad Schuler, William P. Briggs, Arthur D. Lindseth, Mrs. Ted Bakken, Leo Tackes, George Wright, Ernest Johnson, Alma Lonnevick, T. O. Larson, W. P. Philamlee, J. C. Peters, Theodore Paulus, Garvin Matz, Sever Bergan, H. B. Swanson, Mrs. Fred Van Horn, Clara Bellamy, Mrs. Lydia E. Lewis, Archie McRae, Chris Jensen, among others, with tire and tube counts noted for each.
An unidentified observer derides Mrs. Roosevelt as a foolish woman claiming she lacks any real prestige of her own and would have risen independently had she not married into the limelight surrounding her husband.
Each day brings new heroes but the men below deck on ocean ships rank with the greatest. They face unseen dangers and require real nerve to confront what cannot be seen.
Thousands of private ocean going boats will hunt for enemy submarines. Owners offered services at the start of sinkings but many declined. Since January 15 two ships have been sunk daily, and private craft could have saved many vessels and lives.
Local merchants joined a bond and stamp sale drive in Choteau on Wednesday July 1 boosting government security sales. Great Falls merchants scheduled a 15 minute period in stores to sell bonds and stamps and locals planned four drive days monthly with the next on July 17 Hero’s Day.
The Teton County War Board urges farmers to buy lumber now for crop storage and farm construction. A WPB amendment allows early orders to avoid bottlenecks, with dealers aiding but deliveries may be delayed. Available wooden bins include 2820 and 300 bushel sizes from Cho teau Montana priced 400 and 360 dollars respectively, purchasable on cash or notes via county committees.
Weather this week favored crop growth and overall conditions are excellent in the county per S N Halvorson county agent. Spring wheat and feed crops show slower growth and heavy stooling from cool weather requiring more moisture for good yields. Hay especially alfalfa lags, so farmers should put up ample hay for winter reserves. Dry land farmers should avoid buying hay from irrigated projects as livestock demand has risen. Hay prices are expected higher than last year.
Emer son Miller will run the Chateau pool when it opens Friday after a delayed start caused by cool wet weather. Free swimming will be offered on opening day and warmer temperatures are expected to drive high attendance this summer.
At the annual Methodist conference held in Butte, Rev. R. F. Vick received a new posting as Kalispell pastor. Bishop W. E. Hammaker announced several appointments, with Vick’s transfer seen as a promotion. Local residents in Chateau and Teton counties will welcome the change as Vick comes to Choteau to assume duties before moving to Kalispell.
A farewell party will be hosted at the church for Rev. and Mrs. R. F. Vick and family on Tuesday evening July 7 at 8 o'clock. Everyone is invited to attend and bring jello fruit salad or cookies.
Kalispell will gain Rev Bert A Powell 58 who will exchange pulpits with Rev Vick on July 9. Powell has two married children one in Idaho and a Missouri medical school graduate son. Vick, from Sunburst to Choteau five years ago, leaves a parish with about 500 members, roughly double Choteau’s size.
Fourteen of the last contingent of selective service men passed by the Mis soula examining board on June 21 and on a 14 day furlough will depart for the Fort Douglas Utah reception center next Monday July 6 en route as enlisted reserves. Names include Sigurd Brek keflat Joe LaRance Leonard Rice Dale Lee James Glavey Ernest Ir ion Arthur Nedeau Harold Ander son Arthur Brown Joseph Anderson Theo Bingham Russell Huline Glen Kaldor Gilbert England. 82 registered in Tuesdays draft. Local board notes 82 youths aged 18 to 20 registered in Chateau with figures from other points unavailable.
Tommy Wadsworth son of E A Wadsworth of Augusta was admitted June 26 and dismissed June 28. Clara Jones of Brady was discharged June 28. Frank Cruz of Chateau moved to Columbus hospital June 29 for enucleation of left eye. Gracie DeBoer admitted June 29 and discharged July 1.
The national rubber salvage campaign is lengthened to July 10 by presidential decree after poor returns. Montana ranks second nationwide in scrap rubber totals. Chateau service station attendants report busy weeks as Miss D V McCormack, daughter of Dan McCormack of Farmington, collected 930 pounds herself. Other local stations report varied totals such as Rice Auto Court 8 365 pounds and Hanson Bros Garage 5 700 pounds.
Governor Sam C. Ford announced a 40 mph nationwide speed limit for Montana highways, citing rubber conservation and wartime transport needs. Attorney General Gullickson said emergency powers allow action without legislature, with Col. Charles L. Sheridan to set a state wide speed zone forthcoming.
The local civilian defense council announces a gathering at the courthouse next Monday evening at 7:00 PM. Residents are urged to attend this important meeting.
Chamber of Commerce officials plan a full July Fourth program in Chateau with a 10:00 a.m. parade led by the Chateau band from the courthouse. At 2:00 p.m. horse and pony racing will headline at the city park racetrack as entries pour in for a busy, patriotic celebration.
American Legion members are asked to assemble in the Legion club room at 9 30 Saturday morning for the July 4 parade. Band members will meet at 9 30 at the high school.
A Chateau community gathering features a western parade with war stamp prizes, plus street sports and a city park picnic with free coffee and cream. American Legion and Boy and Girl Scout units join in, with races, a band concert, jitney dance, and a pool opening on Friday.
The Mustard Growers Cooperative held its second annual meeting at Conrad city hall on Saturday June 27. Vice-President Clarence Stoltz reported a very successful year with patronage dividends about 75 cents per cwt of business. Paul J. Mortenson of Harvey ND will replace manager P J Anderson who is resigning. Directors include N A Peterson Valier and G W Wagner Brady among others. Former staff Wade Kincaid and Alice H Kooistra were reelected.
