Great Falls Production Credit Association reports 1940 earnings of 12 766 added to prior reserves totaling 60 450. Loans for crops and live stock reached 1 023 294 across Teton Lewis and Clark Cascade and Chouteau counties, with outstanding debt at year end 483 181. Directors elected E F Lyman and Howard F Bowman, office moved to 305 Strain Building for improved service.
Farmers Union School is planned for Bele Community Hall next Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday. Paul Rice chairs with Lyle Standish Mrs Paul Foutch and Sterling DePratu in charge. The program includes parliamentary law at 10 am noon to 3 pm taxes talk by Gilbert Lee, a Stan Halvorson led discussion, John Pierce on Farm Security Administration, a legislative session, and a women’s home economics class on Thursday. A Farm Credit Union meeting is noted in the program.
A letter from Mrs. Beaupre reports Mrs. Chas. Hauxwell an old resident who died Sunday evening in a Portland hospital. Burial will be in Portland. She had lived with her brother Harry K. Ferris in Portland since 1939 after her husband’s death. Survivors include son Donald Bacorn of Oakland and sister Mrs. Luetz of Oakland. Another sister, Mrs. Ida Waterman, long homesteaded near Collins, has died.
The 1940 annual report for the Teton Ranger District notes similar visitation to prior years with about 3,000 people using the area for hunting fishing picnicking and scenery. It reports 7,500 recreation man-days and highlights winter sports potential though little current use besides fur trapping.
Eighteen boys attend a gas engines and welding class in the high school shop funded by the government defense program and led by Harrison Craig. A second group of twelve learns wood construction under Dale Blakely as the dormitory is remodeled for the vocational department. Senate committee chairman Steve C. Arnold says major changes to Montana fish and game laws will be sent to the legislature.
Irene Ruth Slanger a young housewife and mother died last Saturday January eighteenth at Choteau hospital Funeral services were held Tuesday in Choteau Rev R F Vick preached the sermon and burial was in Choteau cemetery Banks Funeral Home in charge Surviving are husband Jack W Slanger three children two daughters Hazel and Jackylne and a newborn son Donald her parents Mr and Mrs John P Jones Eden Montana seven sisters and many relatives She had been born February 14 1912 in Great Falls and had lived in Eden before moving to Farmington in 1935 She was educated in local schools and nursing training.

Miss Doris Stearns of Chateau a Montana State College freshman in home economics was named one of 25 candidates for the Montanan beauty queen title. The five beauty queens were selected by visiting delegates to the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Press convention during the Montanan dance Saturday night in the student union ballroom. Stearns, daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Stearns, is a 1940 graduate of Teton County high school.
John Nordhagen, a recent enlistee at McChord Field, recalls a college of misadventures and brisk supply checks during his first days. He describes a long travel delay, quick processing, issued uniforms and gear, a six week training camp ahead, and the sprawling field with modern barracks and flexible meals. He notes light discipline and a storelike organization as about a thousand men are housed on the base.
Teton High defeated Conrad 28 to 24 in a district clash on Friday. Chateau led Teton with strong scoring while Dellwo and Schmitz contributed on offense. Benton’s undefeated status loomed as a backdrop for next week's schedule. Fairfield fell to Choteau 25 to 20, with a slow start and a tighter second half.
