The note requests reading at the doctor’s funeral. the star narrator, E Pluribus Thistledown, reflects on death and comfort, praising Dr McChesney as a devoted country physician who served all, leaving a somber meditation on voyage beyond life.
The aging doctor recalls countless children born under his care and the constant presence of death. He recounts a patient in Chicago who clung to denial and was told he had less than six months to live.

County agent S N Halvorson reports checks on stored wheat bins found one infested bin with high moisture. The pest is the flat grain beetle or bran bug, not the weevil, and temperatures around 60 degrees drive activity. Farmers are urged to sample wheat, spread it to cool, or fumigate at 70 degrees or above using carbon tetrachloride and ethylene dichloride.
Temperatures climbed from a frigid 14 below to a high of 65 on Tuesday signaling an early spring feel. Residents shed heavy coats and noted the mild January as open winter seems possible this week.
Warning to motorists that 1941 plates and drivers licenses must be purchased by February 1 to avoid arrest. The Civitan Conservation Corps will hold enrollments eight times yearly, up from quarterly, per a State Public Welfare Department announcement. Intermediate enrollments occur in the ten days after each quarter, with the next Teton County enrollment February 18. Youths should contact the Teton County Department of Public Welfare at the courthouse by mail or in person.
The music and literature group of the Chateau Womans club will meet next Tuesday February 4 at the home of Mrs Emily Hodgskiss. Mrs R F Vick is program chairman and roll call will be a musical current event.
The family and friends of Capt James Smith report no improvement as he remains unconscious at his Choteau home. Born in England over 70 years ago he served in the British army, became a World War veteran and later ran a wide injuries business with ties to local affairs. Dr E B Maynard is the attending physician.
The fourth annual report of the Montana Unemployment Compensation Commission shows Teton county paid out 2139 unemployment checks totaling 21632 in the first year of the law’s operation. Across Montana 269329 checks totaling 2956362.23 were issued to 23743 claimants between July 1, 1939 and July 1, 1940.
Senate bill proposes county commissioners campaign only within their districts. Supporters say this reform ensures commissioners secure district approval rather than county-wide support, aligning campaigns with district boundaries and interests.
Fairfield will hold its first election as an incorporated town this coming Saturday February 1 to choose a mayor and two councilmen per ward. Mayor candidates include Fred Schoensigel and Beverly W Graves. Ward one aldermen are Dr L S Crary Otto Duenow Elmer Genger and J E Young. Ward two candidates are J A Blossom Henry Hanson Walter Henneford and Curtis Shaw. Candidates met with Mayor David Rempel and officials to discuss procedures.
Dancers across Teton county join four birthday balls this Saturday night in Claude Power Dutton and Fairfield. The event uses the slogan Dance so others may walk with proceeds aiding a worthy cause. Claude features the Tennant Dahlia orchestra, Power hosts Vern Paulson, Fairfield has Ralph Baldani, Dutton’s music unlisted. Ruth Monkman runs Choteau ticket sales, tickets 75 cents per couple, usable at any ball. Chetau sales near 50 dollars with more solicitation planned.
Lions club members attended an evening program showing films on beaver in their natural habitat. Leon Snyder presented the films for the group at Pishkun. The Biological Survey provided the film material and it was described as very interesting and instructive. Eddie Howard stood in as program chairman for the night. Harold M. Boyd was welcomed as a new member.
Several members of the local Odd Fellows lodge visited the Fort Benton lodge Tuesday evening to assist in second degree work. Gus Depner D.O. Moulton Geo Thompson D H Moulton Harold Bateman A H McGinnis Rolland Ferris Richard Conklin Geo Seufert traveled for the visit and were welcomed warmly.

Fort Benton suffered a 30 to 20 defeat at the hands of Teton in a tough league clash Friday night. The game featured deliberate pacing and strong defense, with Dellwo and Schmitz directing the Chaltoeu attack and Chateau rallying Benton to lead briefly in the second half. Fort Benton’s overall balance and low foul count marked a sharp contrast to Chateau’s disciplined defense.
