The Teton Memorial Hospital association board releases a public report due to low attendance at the annual meeting. It states the building will be completed in three to four months using funds on hand plus a federal grant, with $40,000 needed to equip it. The remaining funds must come from the 1,400 association members.
Chateau residents should prevent frozen pipes by letting a small trickle of water run through pipes during subzero weather. If a thaw occurs the practice should continue. Mayor EK Sturgis cites a Great Falls report urging water to keep moving, with a basement tap left slightly open.
The Chateau weather bureau reports a frigid week with daily subzero highs and lows. Thursday reached -10/-20 and Friday -13/-25, while Saturday -22/-32 and Sunday -5/-29. The week’s low was -36 Tuesday, and yesterday and today rose to 15 above and 17 below respectively.
George Eichhorn, longtime Scobey Monarch Lumber manager, arrives in Choteau to lead the local operation succeeding Mike Collette who moves to Kalispell. Eichhorn, a Montana State University alumnus and former U S Army Air Force pilot, will reside in the Cowgill addition home with Mrs. Eichhorn. Collette, with 25 years at Monarch, will head the Kalispell unit and was formerly with the Browning and Choteau firms. he is transferring after six years as Choteau manager.
Friday night at the Choteau high school gym features a main event as the Conrad Cowboys meet the Choteau Bulldogs at 8:15 with a halftime folk-dance routine. A 7:15 prelim shows the Conrad reserves vs Choteau reserves, and two Valier grade squads face A and B Choteau teams.
The Rev. A Bernard Gravdal Chateau Lutheran pastor was appointed by Gov John W Bonner to a five member State Hospital Advisory council to work with the state board of health on health and hospital issues. Term ends June 1951. Gravdal has long served on the Teion Memorial Hospital association board and as secretary.
At the January Choteau Chamber meeting a push was made to accelerate the Dutton Choteau road project. A chamber delegation will confer with Dutton groups and Lions Club members to promote a joint effort, viewing the road as a top farm to market priority.
The Choteau Bulldogs lost to Fairfield 44 to 27 at Fairfield with D Squires scoring 20 for the Eagles. A 42 to 37 defeat at Cut Bank followed as Dellno and Anderson led with 14 each, McGovern and Anderson key in late final.
A discussion meeting on sprinkler irrigation is scheduled for Thursday Jan. 26 at the courthouse in Chateau. The session runs 10 30 a m to about 4 p m and will be led by Extension irrigation specialist H L Dusenberry of Bozeman.
Walter H. Marshall announces Choteau Census office seeks enumerators crew leaders payroll clerk supply clerk and reserve crew leader with 13 enumerators needed across Teton and Pondera counties starting April 1 1950. Applications due February 15 with examinations for all applicants.
The January 15 to 31 polio drive in Teton County aims to raise 50 percent more than last year. Chairman H R Prior notes that 80 percent of adults tested carry polio antibodies, implying widespread exposure and subclinical infections. He cites March of Dimes funding exceeding $11 million spent on prevention and crippling after-effects research.
Basketball fans may secure reserved seat tickets for the district high school tournament at Shelby on February 23 24 and 25. Supt. R C Graham of Chateau High School holds 100 adult season tickets at 5.50 each. Buy by writing a check to Graham or visiting the superintendent. return unsold tickets to Shelby if not purchased.
The Teton Plumbing and Heating Co. at Chateau has received an electrical thawing device. Tom Hammond will answer calls to thaw pipes during cold weather. The device is for community use, not for sale, to assist residents in distress.
Teton district scouters met at Fairfield on Wednesday January 4 at 7 pm presided by Easy Murphy district chairman. Training by Henry Helf and Mark Judy directed cubber course. Plans include January 25 first aid contest in Fairfield chaired by George Armstrong. Scout finance campaigns set for February in Chateau Bynum Power and Fairfield. 1950 Crusade to Strengthen the Arm of Liberty approved with a three day Augusta camp in June. Scout Week February 6 to 12 marks 40th anniversary with a large celebration. A Fairfield flag ceremony was held and Murphy announced the 1950 jamboree at Valley Forge Pennsylvania with one delegate per troop. Registration due March 1. Leaders will chaperone a train trip for about 40,000 scouts from across America and foreign countries to Washington Crossing the Delaware. A doctor will accompany.
The hospital association plans a final drive within two weeks to raise 40000 for equipment plus 5500 in unpaid pledges due immediate payment. Board members pledge 250 each, merchants offer at cost, and federal matched funds of 68316.67 are anticipated.
Montana Dakota Utilities Co will move to the former Royal theater site on February 1. The Marshall Wells building on Main Street will host the utilities offices and remodelled store space, expanding to a 140 foot sales floor to display appliances, plumbing supplies, and floor covering moved from the annex. Charlie Bowers notes the change will improve public service.
A Choteau doctor offers quick guidance after several locals suffered freezing injuries. Thaw in a cold room with cold water, avoid snow and heat until thawed, do not massage, do not break blisters, treat blistered areas as burns and guard against infection, and note whiskey is not useful for thawing.
The Chateau Wheel basket team narrowly defeated the Fairfield Irrigators 48 to 47 at Fairfield. Cecil Cole and Harold Hinman led Wheels with 14 points each, while Fairfield guarder topped with 13. Wheel momentum swung after an early deficit as the game ended with a one point margin.
A Masonic dinner and dance is planned at the Masonic hall at Chateau this Saturday night. All Masons and their wives are urged to attend.
Mayor K E Sturgis spoke at the Chateau Chamber of Commerce outlining planned steps on city administration. He noted possible home gas inspections by a utility inspector and the need for an emergency gas tie in to ensure supply.
Charles Kroft formerly owned a stock ranch northwest of Choteau and died December 30 in Taylor British Columbia Canada. He was a longtime member of the Choteau Odd Fellows lodge and a charter member of the first IOOF lodge in Choteau. He sold his ranch to Tim Cook years ago and moved to Taylor where he lived until his death.
