Joe Brockley of Chateau is jailed after a burglary complaint filed by County Attorney B I Packer. The alleged break in at Chet Smith’s south town shop yielded a lynx pelt and an acetylene welding outfit found near the river. Brockley pleaded not guilty. bond set at 1000 dollars and he remains jailed awaiting district court trial.
Teton county high school basketball finished a three game road swing with two dominant wins over Malta and Chinook and a narrow one point loss to Fort Benton. The Bulldogs displayed improved ball handling and a likely starting lineup as they prep for undefeated Power and Shelby visits.
The New Year’s Eve dance at the Masonic hall yielded a net profit of 42.80, the greatest in years, with 95 tickets sold at 1.00 each. Mrs. Evelyn Davis led the Woman’s club committee as chair, and excellent music by the Tennant-Dahlia orchestra complemented the fine weather and festive mood.
Ray Nelson and wife Mrs R E Nelson observed their 85th wedding anniversary with family and friends this week. They were married January 5 1916 in Minot North Dakota by Rev N Nilsen. The couple resided in Joplin Montana before moving to Chateau about twenty years ago and have one daughter Mildred Louise.
The January meeting will be held at the Choteau high school on Saturday night January 25 at 8 pm. Choteau leaders will run the program and the Collins Liberty Center will provide lunch. All leaders are urged to attend.
The next quota for Teton County under the selective service act is set at one man. Charles Eldon Brady of Fairfield has passed preliminary medicals and will train January 22. Fairfield men Edwin Ketterling Guy Gibson Gilbert Lange Wayne Barrett Edward Horne join the army. Everett Leech of Bynum enlisted. John Nordhagen of Chateau leaves for Great Falls to seek a Flying Corps mechanic post. another examiner will be appointed due to Dr. Aateman’s absence. Dr. S Crary likely to fill the role.
Loomis a 66 year old well known resident was arrested Saturday January 4 by Sheriff A. O. Peterson on a statutory rape charge filed by County Attorney B. I. Packer. He pled not guilty before Justice R. A. Clearman with $1000 bonds set but not posted and was remanded to county jail awaiting district court before Judge R. M. Hattersley. Atty. E. Arsen will defend. The offense allegedly occurred December 26 when Loomis and a girl under the legal age were seen entering an ice house in the southeast part of the city. the girl had been visiting in Chateau and left for home in Lewistown the next day. A sheriff's statement substantiates the charge.
At the regular meeting on Monday the city council elected Frank Stearns to fill the vacancy left by Paul Kropp. The three existing members were joined by Stearns to create equal representation until the next election. Other officials named were Chick Sulgrove Hampton Bloom and Al Douchty.
A joint meeting of the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary of Chateau will be held Monday evening January 13 at the K P hall. Dinner at 7 pm then separate business meetings followed by dancing and cards to finish the evening.
Hileen Beck and Martin Shannon were married January 7 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran church in Power with Rever end G. Michael officiating. The couple plan to live near Drummond Montana and work respectively in farming and local jobs.
The first meeting of Teton County High School's defense program group will be in the agricultural room Saturday January 11 at 8 p m. The class will teach gas engines and welding for boys ages 17 to 26, sponsored by the vocational department for rural and non rural youth. Harrison Craig leads as instructor with equipment being organized to ensure a thorough course. Interested individuals should attend to sign up and set a suitable schedule.
In Teton county arrangements are in place to mark President Roosevelt's birthday with four dances at Dutton Fairfield Power and Claude on the night of Feb 1. Tickets are 5 cents per couple with 25 cents for extra ladies and are valid at any dance. Seventy percent of proceeds stay in Chateau for infantile paralysis care and the remainder goes to the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis.
Choteau Merchants and Fairfield Irrigators top the league and set a two game series for the championship starting Monday January 13 in Choteau with a potential third game at Fairfield January 16. Both teams boast polished offenses and strong home crowds are urged to support the hometown clubs.
The second annual spelling bee sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary will be held Friday night at 8 in the high school auditorium. Admission is 10 and 25 cents. Sponsors and contestants are listed from local businesses and offices, with rules including no coaching, word definitions on request, ten second spelling limits, and disqualification after one misspell.
Reproductions of 150 works from French Italian Flemish English Dutch Spanish German and American schools will be shown at the grade school this weekend and next. The collection includes portraits landscapes marines and pastoral scenes in colors close to the originals. A living picture program will close the exhibit.
Three local amateur boxers will appear on the Heisey Memorial card in Great Falls Friday evening January 17. Keith Vick will meet Jim Martin at 152 pounds, Bud Gillette headlines at heavyweight against Martin Matovich, and Richard Vick is set for a brother showdown. The event draws strong local followings and fans expect spirited performances.
The local Odd Fellows lodge held installation of elective and appointive officers last Tuesday evening at the club rooms. District Deputy Grand Master K R Smith led the ceremony with several deputies, naming Gus Depner as Noble Grand and D O Moulton as Vice-Grand among others. The event included dancing to the Tennant-Dahlin orchestra and midnight lunch.
Records from H. M. Daley's clerk show 85 marriage licenses in 1940 down from 95 and 98 in the prior two years. Divorces reached 13 with three annulments, seven criminal actions, seven adoptions, 21 probate actions and 25 civil actions. A Cub Pack meeting is set for Tuesday January 14 at 7 pm at the Legion club rooms for re registration of members.
