Treasurer O G Meadows and deputies prepare for the 1940 license period. Over 3,000 vehicles will be licensed with white plates and blue numerals. Owners must pay taxes and have vehicles assessed by County Assessor Gilbert Lee before new plates are issued.
An automobile owner who pays license fees to the wrong county may be hit twice. Attorney General J. Freebourn ruled the county entitled to the fee may collect or sue for an accounting if the owner fails to heed the law. Owners paying to the wrong county must also settle taxes based on the 1940 levy and then pay the license fee for plates.
Atty Geo Coffey writes the Montana Oil Journal feature on Devonian limestone exposures in Sun River canyon above Augusta. The article notes accessible Devonian sections in the Rocky Mountains and reports samples showing oil on dissolution and a petroleum odor from horse hoof impact on the petroliferous lime.

Friends and relatives from at least five counties filled the L D S church in Bynum on Thursday December 26 for the funeral of Edmund Morhardt killed in a recent automobile accident. The service featured multiple vocal solos and duets with local accompanists as a throng of four to five hundred gathered. A procession of over 70 cars conveyed mourners to Chateau for burial beside his wife Joy Stott Morhardt who died in February 1940.
Stations and garages will be closed on New Year’s Day except L. E. Taylor Garage after proprietors’ meeting. Boys drew straws to decide which station remains open.
The Chateau Merchants clocked four wins and one loss over a busy weekend. They split a Thursday double header, beat Dutton 21 36 on Friday, then defeated Augusta town team in a Saturday night game while losing to DeMolay Alumni of Great Falls in overtime. The Northern Montana Mustard Growers Cooperative held its quarterly meeting in Conrad with over 200 attendees from Teton County. Directors discussed standard grades for mustard, pure seed strains, and registration with the Montana Seed Growers Association, plus decisions on handling the 1941 crop.
Lewis Penwell, collector of internal revenue, says 1940 income tax return blanks including Forms 1040 1040 A 1065 and 1120 will be released January 3. Forms 1041 for estates and trusts already released but not mailed. All forms will be mailed after January 3 except 1120 blanks held for Form 1121 receipt.
Mrs. Chris Beck of the Woman's club says arrangements are nearly finished for the annual spelling bee on Friday January 10 with many merchants having entered contestants. Merchants who have not yet selected a contestant should submit their representative's name to Mrs. Beck for publication next week. Judges and pronouncing master are chosen and the event is expected to top last year. Full details will appear in next week's Acantha.
The Teton County Sportsmen's Association will hold a meeting Friday evening January 3 in the court room. President H. M. Daley says several legislative items will be discussed.
Postmaster C G Mo and assistant Mrs McGinnis expect gross postal receipts to exceed 10 000 for 1940, the highest in Chateau history. Since 1934 yearly totals rose from 8082 78 to 9787 75, with Christmas traffic heavy on Mondays before the holiday. Alien registration ended December 26 with 75 aliens registered locally.
The 1940 season outline reports limited funds limited road work on four wagon projects within the Teton District of Lewis and Clark National Forest. It notes 83 trails totaling 559 miles, with annual maintenance tasks before fire season and numerous trail features to support foot saddle and pack travel.
