The Lewis and Clark Guides and Packers Association holds its first regular meeting at Chateau next Friday January 6 at 1 PM. About fifteen to twenty attendees are expected with Mrs. Ralph Allen presiding. The group covers the Rocky Mountain area from the Erbhorn River to Glacier Park and aims to regulate game outdoor activities and dude ranching interests.

Simon Maccany, once a fox farm operator in Choteau, now runs an auto camp business in Hayward, California. Shelby All Stars Take 52 38 Victory Over Chateau Racketeers
The Shelby All Stars defeated the Chateau Racketeers by about 52 to 38 on Shelby’s floor. The game was tied 19-20 at halftime before Shelby surged ahead in the second half. A return game is scheduled in Shelby on January 22. The F. P. A. boys of Teton chapter also played the first string Bulldogs and pushed them hard in a separate matchup.

Teton County Board Chooses Edwards as Chairman
The Teton county board of commissioners met for the regular January session. N W Edwards was elected chairman to succeed Algon Udin. Jas Peebles joined the board replacing W J Earle. The session continues today due to a holiday. Auditing claims and courthouse lighting upgrades were authorized. Fred Schoensigel declined the Fairfield justice of the peace post.

Chateau Woman's club New Year's dance raises funds
The Chateau Woman's club hosted a New Year’s dance Saturday night sponsored by the club. Mild weather and merriment drew a large crowd, with a doll-drawing prize won by Mrs. George Coffey. Net proceeds are about 50 dollars to support Chateau public library. Committee members included Mrs. Fred S. Willson and others who thanked the public for support.

The Teton County clerk issued 98 marriage licenses in 1938 up from 67 in 1937. Civil actions held steady at 53. Criminal cases totaled four, including two larcenies, one burglary and one drunken driving, lower than 1937’s ten. Probate filings rose to 39 from 30. Civil filings covered damages, divorce, foreclosures, attachments, unlawful detainer, and other matters with a range of actions.

Weather winds up New Year with damage in county
A Chinook wind following last week's blizzard brought near tornado level winds in parts of the county. Montana Power Co. reported 19 toppled power poles near the line to Conrad with minimal service interruptions. Farm structures suffered in Farmington and Agawam, including a large chicken house wreck and damaged garages. Damages to CCC camps and reservoirs were reported but not confirmed.

Several Choteau residents traveled to Great Falls last Saturday for the funeral of Jas. M. Burlingame 71 a pioneer businessman who died the prior Wednesday in Great Falls. Postmaster Gibson Monkman announced Chateau's postal receipts increased seven percent from the previous year, with 18 percent more business in the 10 days before Christmas. The gross exceeded the $8,000 third class office threshold, while cash received for savings bonds totaled $37,875 with a maturity value of $50,000 in ten years. About 80 sacks of mail arrived and 40 were dispatched on the holiday day.
