Trails shortage hampers hour control in four districts
Forest service notes 33 695 miles of trails still needed to meet hour control goals. Large fire percentage has fallen with road and trail expansion and detection and communications are vital. Four western districts require 12 600 more miles of telephone lines and 785 more lookout towers, nine and a half years to install at present pace. Major Kelley cautions not all losses stem from protection gaps, but completing the fire control system should reduce burned acreage to acceptable levels.
