The examination of National Forest boundaries done last summer under Secretary Wilson and Secretary Ballinger leads to restoring land to the public domain. In Idaho about 470,000 acres will be eliminated, 34 percent of which is tillable, with similar reductions planned in other Western States.
The Washington Lincoln exercises are set for Friday at eight in the High School assembly hall. The event replaces Tuesday due to school work. The program features recitations, songs, drama, and tributes to Washington and Lincoln by grades 1 through 8, with speakers including Merrill Luther Guthrie Bess, Silas Monroe, Roe Wilcox and Melville Evatt.
North Carolina Senator Tillman shows improvement from a paralysis attack that threatened his life. The Department orders new post offices in Brads and Porter within Teton County as growth accelerates. Mary W. Porter will be postmistress at Porter and Charles W. Jonson will head Brandy. Additional offices are planned to serve the rapidly increasing population, with Fish Lake already under discussion.
In the Eighth District Court of Montana Teton County a guardianship for Johan Smit Magdalens A Smit and Annie Caroline Smit minors seeks an Order of Sale of their real estate. The court orders kin and interested parties to appear March 28 1910 in Choteau to show cause why the guardian may sell the minors estate at private sale. The Acantha notes receipt of Crop Reporter figures from John D. Godwin listing Montana farm stock on January 1, 1910. Horses 319000 valued at 25520000, sheep 5747000 valued at 24137000, milch cows 80000 valued at 3720000, other cattle 842000 valued at 23071000, swine 75000 valued at 758000.
Collins reports Mr Harber from Lowa helps at the depot. The region endures the largest snow drifts of the winter. Miss Tinhberg, visiting Mrs Vaughn, returns home near Conrad. The new Mallman property restaurant opens for business.
Department of the Interior notices Hatllie M. Coppey assignee of Sage OC Miller Bynum Montana seeks final proof to establish a land claim in Teton County Montana for the SW and NW segments in section 1 township 27 range 6 West Montana Meridian. Hearing before A C Warner at Choteau Montana on March 7 1910 with witnesses George D Porter William Jones Frank Wall and John B Wellenstein. First publication February 19 1910.
Report notes ten days of severe weather across the region with temperatures below zero, snow 5 to 7 inches deep and drifting, one day recording 40 degrees below on the beach and 36 below in Chateau. Livestock losses avoided due to prior feeding, winter viewed as largely favorable aside from the cold period. The piece ends with a hopeful line about an abrupt warm spell.
Miss Evers of Mort Benton returns home Saturday after visiting friends there. A bank is planned in Shelby and there is talk of a newspaper. The storm is general through the county and a chinook is hoped for. Harvey Read, a former Chateau boy, will relocate to Conrad to run a market for the Great Falls Meat Co, after years with the company in the Falls.
The ladies' industrial met yesterday with Mrs. D. D. Cole as hostess. Weather prevented several members from attending.
George Gerrit Slanger of Collins and Ole Johnson Nordhagen of Chateau declare intent to become U S citizens after appearing before Clerk of Court Gibson on February 10. Nordhagen, father of O M Nordhagen, a well known Wharf tailor, plans ranching. An Acantha reader from Alaska, Geo M Johnson, sent gold nuggets as payment for the paper, noting nuggets and gold dust are legal tender in his region. George, who left his mine to town of Susitna, winters there, recalled old Middle West custom of paying for local paper with cord wood and vegetables.

Pierce of Farmington Montana files intention to complete final five year proof to establish his homestead claim on the northwest quarter of section 13 township 26 north range 4 west Montana Meridian. Proof set for March 1 1910 before A Warner U S commissioner at Chateau Montana. Witnesses listed: Peter O Truchot Alexander Trunchot Charles Fustee Sulste George L D Porter Bynum. A five-member party of prominent eastern businessmen led by Wm F Reickhoff and including P D Van Osterbout Garrett Klay and I H Drew visited Chateau last week to inspect large ranch properties. They reportedly nearly closed a deal for a major ranch with the Chateau Land and Loan Co as weather limited travel. they plan to return home this afternoon.
