All farmers in Teton county with old farm wheat acreage allotments may join the 1957 Soil Bank Acreage Reserve. Sign-up runs through March 8 at the County ASC office 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eligibility depends on complying with established wheat allotments and signing the agreement by landowners or those with land control.
The Bulldogs won two basketball games last week, beating the Browning Indians 63 59 in a conference tilt at Browning. Indian forward Tom Whitford led with 19 points while Choteau’s Jay Dunckel and Roger Gefeller each scored 15. Choteau beat Conrad 68 62 as Dunckel led with 27 points and Doug Olen added 23 after Ken Rustad was sidelined with a sprained ankle. The Browning B team also defeated the Bulldog B team 31 30.
A ground blizzard and sub zero temps kept crowds small yet eager as 105 Chateau residents attended a Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Co family film festival at Chateau High School Auditorium. The program featured Our Mr Sun from a new Bell System science series and a fantasy film Once Upon a Honeymoon with Virginia Gibson and Ward Ellis. Exhibits included a solar battery powering tiny motors and a Teletrainer demonstration unit. Community members and Great Falls staff presented the event with student refreshments and classroom participation.
Marion Jacobs announces the Crusade for Freedom Drive in Choteau on Saturday February 23 with 11:00 a.m. church bells signaling a one hour house to house canvass by the American Legion Auxiliary and Chateau school students. Collectors meet at 10:30 a.m. at the lower American Legion hall and return there for treats from Federates Legion. contributions may be mailed to the Auxiliary or left with the Postmaster.
Ray V Olson 43 a Cut Bank farmer and aviator was buried in Cut Bank after dying in a Feb 1 airplane crash in the Big Hole Basin seven miles southeast of Jackson. The wreckage was located Saturday by a Dillon pilot with snowmobile support from the Big Hole Snowmobile Association as coroner Ray Swartz and Undersheriff Lloyd Thomas coordinated the recovery. Pallbearers from Cut Bank included Grant Curtis Mel Meton Herb Sammons Chet Sammons John Atkins and Kyle Momberg. Bafiks Funeral Home guided arrangements.
LeRoy Gelsinger 72 died Friday in Teton Memorial hospital after a long heart ailment. Funeral services were held Monday at Augusta Community church with Rev. A B Gravdal officiating. He lived in Augusta since 1952 and served as justice of the peace. survived by wife Hattie L Maphies, two children, three grandchildren, two brothers in Oregon and Missouri. Burial was at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Great Falls. Banks Funeral Home oversaw arrangements.
Miss Maxine Snyder daughter of Mr and Mrs Sidney Snyder Chateau joined 22 other students in Columbus Hospital Chapel Great Falls on Sunday Feb 17 as she is capped signaling acceptance into the nursing program. Rev Martin Burke pastor of Blessed Sacrament Black Eagle delivered the address with hospital chaplain Rev Victor Zabelle presiding a reception followed for parents and friends in the nursing school social room. Mr and Mrs W F Olsen visited Missoula this past weekend.
Teton county motorists have begun licensing vehicles with 2 165 cars and 1 726 trucks plated by Feb 18. Trailers and motorcycles show small increases from last year, while total revenue sits at 124 233 52 dollars. The state extension to Mar 1 likely reduced registrations compared to last year.

Clara Elizabeth Stokes 68, longtime Bynum Fairfield Belt resident, died Saturday at a Great Falls rest home. Born January 9, 1889 in Brazil Indiana, she moved to Montana in 1917. Survived by three sons Glenn James Herman, three daughters Margaret Brecksmith Hulah Lou Mildred, a sister Anna Dormblaser, 20 grandchildren, two great grandchildren. Funeral Monday at a Great Falls mortuary with burial in Highland cemetery.
A wool packing demonstration is set for February 28 at the Bryan Corbett ranch near Chateau starting at 11 30. Coffee and doughnuts provided. bring lunch. A Montana Wool Lab member will assist, bringing samples of improperly tied fleeces and showing outcomes of incorrect handling at shearing.
James Jarolimek proprietor of the Coast-to-Coast Store was elected president of the Choteau Chamber of Commerce at a Tuesday noon meeting in the basement dining room of the Choteau Drug. Officers named include Cedric Schroeder vice president Robert Crocker secretary Al Hensley director for 1 year and George Eichhorn retiring president director for 3 years. The chamber outlined banquet plans honoring high school teams and coaches in two tournaments with a single $5 ticket covering both banquets to fund the events. President Eichhorn noted a July 1958 Teton county pageant and the group agreed to cooperate with the Young Timers sponsors. Jerry Breen reported on a Helena meeting for county chairmen on Feb 4.
James Beadle was installed as Munster Councilor of the Chateau De Molays at a closed Jan 28 installation in the Masonic Temple. Pete Howard served as installing officer. Other officers and preceptors were named. Phil Young to be initiated at the next meeting.

Dr Crary will administer Salk polio vaccine at the Bynum school Wednesday February 27 starting 9:30 am for adults and children. In the afternoon he will be at Fairfield grade school from 1:30 pm to give additional inoculations.
Clif Hanson of Chateau bulk plant operator won the grand prize at the annual VFW Perch Derby held Sunday at Bynum Reservoir with a 1 lb 3 oz perch. Prize money totaled 6.90 in cash. Pleased spectators and 283 anglers registered, with an estimated crowd of 350 to 400 on the ice. Community sponsors included Schroeder Hardware and several local bars and stores.
Funeral services for Dora Sturgeon who died February 12 were held at a Hollywood mortuary and pervaseide rites performed by the Easter Star. She is buried beside her husband Richard Sturgeon and daughter-in-law, Frank Daggett. Survivors include four daughters, ten grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Cub Scouts held their annual Blue and Gold banquet in Lemonwall on Wednesday night February 13. Attendees included A C Hanusa District Scout Council Bettys Levi representing VFW Austin Grant Curtis from Lions Club and Troop 51 BSA along with cubmaster Jack Rogers. Rev A B Grandal gave the invocation and Jim Peterson Great Falls performed magic. Awards were given to cubs and den mothers received gifts.
Rev A B Gravdal led a farewell dinner at St Paul’s Lutheran on Fairfield Beach for Rev E E Tollefson and family who resign to take a post in Arlington Washington. Rev David Larson Laurel will succeed and begin duties on the second Sunday in June with interim Rev A B Cornialson Great Falls serving until then.
Mr and Mrs James T Robison left Tuesday by plane for Los Angeles then on the Lurline to Honolulu to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary on the Tth of March. Mrs Robison Birthday is March 12 and Robison’s March 27.
Thieves struck Choteau Feed & Seed Co, gaining entry by prying a door and hiding behind a boxcar. Items stolen include two saddles and gloves. In Dut tor, a rear window was broken at Highway Crurage for 19 boxes of rifle shells and related goods. Peterson & Co yard north of Hobson saw three storage batteries and an expensive ten year Silver Nuclear battery taken. sheriff's officers report.
Ed Schiller reports the Northern Class B divisional basketball tourney will start Feb 28 in Choteau with seven teams Cut Bank Choteau Sunburst Conrad Browning Fairfield and Walter. Cut Bank sits first with an undefeated conference record and earns a bye on opening day. Choteau is second with three losses. Opening Thursday will pit the fourth and fifth place teams.
