Great Falls Tribune Publisher Addresses Chamber Banquet

William A. Cordingley publisher of the Great Falls Tribune was the keynote speaker at the annual Chamber banquet at the Lions Club hall. He urged leadership on local issues, discussed Montana's oil mining and agriculture potential, tax reform, water rights, and keeping youth in state. Various dignitaries and guests attended including Harold McCollum and Mayor John McLaughlin.

Jury duty panel drawn for Choteau area in Montana

A district court postponed Monday's trial after a settlement. Jurors drawn by Judge McPhillips will be summoned March 3 in Choteau to hear pending cases. The list names 80 prospective jurors from Choteau Fairfield Dutton Power Pen droy and surrounding communities.

Annual Boy Scout Fund Drive Launches This Week

The Chateau drive involves four groups Odd Fellows American Legion Lions Club and LDS Church soliciting 697 prospect cards toward a $2000 goal. Kickoff featured Bill Scotson and Norman Johnson with plans to complete canvassing in one week.

Speakers Announced For Teton County Farm Bureau Meeting

Muriel Reiquam Teton County Superintendent of Schools and Mrs Chester Baker of the Welfare Department will speak at a Farm Bureau meeting on Wednesday February 26 at 8 pm in the Cornell Hotel. They will explain their offices duties and the public is invited. Other county officials will present similar programs in March and April.

Youngtimers Banquet and Dance Set for April 12

Youngtimers secretary Mrs Albert Carlson announced that the annual banquet and dance will be in Chateau after Fairfield Legion hall burned. The event is scheduled for Saturday April 12 and invites all bowlers planning to enter the spring state tournament to reserve the date.

The Explorer Scout spaghetti dinner is set for Saturday February 22 at the United Methodist Church. Serving starts at 4 30 p m. Co sponsored by the Chateau American Field Service Chapter. Proceeds fund activities of both groups. Adult 125, child 75 cents, family 4 dollars.

Bulldogs climb to third with weekend conference wins

Chateau Bulldog basketball squad moved into third place in conference standings after wins over Sunburst and Valier. They have two league games left before the divisional tournament at Shelby, facing Browning and a meeting with top team Fairfield Eagles, plus a non conference date with Fort Benton. In the Sunburst game Chateau won 62-54 as Ameline and Camden sparked the offense and Smith pulled down 17 rebounds.

Advance Payments Allowed On Farm Diversion Program

Montana officials announce producers signing up by March 21 for the 1969 feed grain and wheat programs may request up to 50 percent advance payments on voluntary acreage diversion. The policy applies to diversion payments but not to wheat certificate or feed grain price support payments.

G. L. Banks received a request from D. C. Heath Co. for a photo used in A Vanishing America. The image shows the Drake Drug Store once housed in Chateau’s old post office building on Main Avenue. The photo may appear in a Harvard Dr. Freidel textbook published by D.C. Heath.

Snowmobile Derby Set for Sunday at Cow Track Lodge

A snowmobile derby is planned for Sunday February 16 near the Cow Track Lodge in Teton Canyon starting 12 30 p m sponsored by the Chateau Jaycees. Admission is 1 per car with refreshments by Choteau Jayceens and 300 in trophies for race winners. Entries from area towns expected and several local drivers plan to participate.

Funeral Services Held Monday For John L. Chick Sulgrove

John L. Sulgrove known as Chick, aged 56, died Friday February 7 after a two and a half year illness in Teton Memorial Hospital. The United Methodist Church service included American Legion and Chateau Masonic Lodge members with military graveside rites by the American Legion. Pallbearers listed and banks Funeral Home oversaw arrangements. Sulgrove, a Choteau native born September 30 1912, served in India in World War II and held multiple local posts including American Legion and fire department. He married Marie J. Jackson in 1954 in Great Falls and leaves a wife, three children, a mother, a brother and sisters plus four grandchildren. Distance attendees came from Billings Conrad Livingston and others.

Chinook winds bring relief after record lows in late January. Bitter cold peaked at minus 37, with January averaging minus 11 and 19 inches of snow soaking the area. Frost thawing sparked frozen water and sewer lines, while drifting delayed travel as county crews cleared long snow drifts.

Legion to Sponsor Valentine's Dance

The American Legion will sponsor a Valentine’s dance on Saturday February 15 at the lower Legion hall. Morris orchestra provides music with dancing starting at 9 pm. Free door prizes will be awarded and proceeds aid community activities including the baseball program Boy Scouts and Boys State.

Deadline Extended For License Purchase By Highway Patrol

Colonel S. W. Hancock announced that the license plate purchase deadline is extended until Monday Feb 17. Snow problems hinder Montana residents and Patrol officers will not issue traffic summons until after county offices close at 5 p.m. Saturday. The Patrol urges residents who can register before Monday to shorten lines for those facing registration delays.

Civil Defense Test Slated for County Friday Afternoon

Teton County Civil Defense Director LaVerne Murr announced a statewide civil defense drill Friday February 14 from 1 to 5 pm. County officials will join Civil Defense personnel at the County Emergency Operating Center and coordinate with Chauteau Fairfield Dutton and Bynum Pendroy communities while a state evaluator oversees procedures.

H. W. Mitchell Services Today

Harvey Willis Mitchell 88 of Augusta died Tuesday after a three week illness. Funeral services Thursday at 2 p.m. at Augusta Community Church with Rev. Edward Ferguson, burial in Augusta Cemetery. Pallbearers named. Banks Funeral Home in charge. Mitchell born December 15 1880 in Bedford Indiana moved to Montana in 1897 and later Augusta in 1931. He was deputy sheriff of Dawson County for 24 years and operated a Conoco station 38 years. He married Millicent Jo Dickinson in 1907. she survives. He was a life member of the Elks and a Brotherhood of Railway Employees member.
