Gallows for Brutal Prison Slaying and Warden Attack
In eastern Montana a brutal escape plot ends in murder and a deadly assault at Deer Lodge prison. Rock and Hayes kill deputy warden John Robinson and wound Frank Conley during a plan to seize keys and escape. Rock is executed in 1908. Hayes hanged in 1909 after trials that also condemned Stevens and Young to life terms or dungeon time. The narrative recounts the volatile history surrounding the 1904 jailhouse feud and the notorious double murder inside the Montana state prison.
