Surveyor Carroll Maynard reports gravel and maintenance on Teton county roads are stalled by bad weather and tight budgets. High parts and freight costs, worn equipment, and a single new D-8 caterpillar nearly exhaust the outlay. Overhauls extend to 19 year old pickups as graveling schedules halt for months.
City council discussed recommendations from the Chateau Fire Dept. for fire safety. Proposals include banning burning garbage behind the Masonic Odd Fellow halls site, removing rear Larson building garbage, prohibiting garage driveway parking, and requiring screens or covers on incinerators and garbage containers in the inner fire zone.
Frazer and John Deere dealer announces a new fully equipped repair shop for cars trucks and tractors. Art Anderson the trained mechanic who formerly lived in Fairfield will oversee the shop.
N W Edwards an executive board official of the Montana Association of County Commissioners will travel to Missoula this weekend to arrange dates for the association annual convention to be held there in the spring.
B R Green was re elected president of the Golden Ridge Community hall at its annual meeting in Sunny Slope. Elmer Pearson Emil Jackson Max DeYoung and Vear Stott were elected directors with Reece Silve as secretary treasurer. The group plans a new hall and will raise funds via Acantha subscriptions sold by Sunny Slope schoolchildren.
Thirteen members of the C. James Smith American Legion post of Chateau were initiated at Legion hall last Saturday in formal ceremonies. New initiates include Elbert N. Amundson Albert Bruno Jr. William Duffey Richard Gronberg George Lansing Harry Lunistra D O Moulton Charles Nesbit Thomas Rogers Lowell Scott Milton Van Auken Leon Weist Hubert Reid. A stag party followed the initiation.
Cantata director Marge Hanusa invites singers from multiple denominations to the first Easter cantata choir rehearsal at Trinity Lutheran on Third Street at 8 o clock this Thursday. All who wish to join are urged to attend. The Episcopal guild plans a Thursday afternoon meeting at Mrs. Fred Teschs home on February 12.
Postmaster C Gibson Monkman reports Chateau Montana postal business has nearly doubled in 14 years with 1947 December stamp sales at 2082.56 and 10 day Christmas cancellation total at 41830. Annual figures climb from 8082.78 in 1934 to 14157.38 in 1947, reflecting steady growth and the town awaiting potential federal building.
Frigid temperatures dominated the week with readings at Chateau minus 10 Sunday and Monday, plus 2 Tuesday morning, minus 7 last night. Blizzard squalls disrupted travel Tuesday and Wednesday, with several cars stuck on Choteau streets as hard snow banks hindered country roads.
Mrs Olga Hansen aged 58 mother of Mrs John M Johnson of Choteau was buried in Dutton cemetery after an 11 am service at the Dutton Lutheran church conducted by Rev A B Gravdal of Choteau. Mrs Clarence Hebtner sang and Mrs Glen Hansen played the organ. She had lived in Canada for 45 years and died January 7 in Falun Alberta.
A mobile X-ray unit found 52 residents in Teton County with tuberculosis or serious body defects. Of 3,203 residents scanned, 3,198 yielded good images, 52 showed conditions, and 11 were non-TB pathology. Letters will prompt medical exams, with follow ups if neglected. Continued on page five.
Coast-to-Coast Stores Central Organization will host over 525 store owners at the Nicollet hotel in Minneapolis from February 8 to 11. Ed Obernolte, owner of the Chateau Coast-to-Coast store, will travel to attend. The meeting gathers store owners wives and COI members with manufacturers and suppliers to review new merchandise, display techniques, and newspaper advertising importance.
County and city residents are being canvassed to raise 40 000 for a 180 000 hospital at Chateau. Campaign aims to meet federal aid deadline by March 1 with a late report due next week from the Teton Memorial Hospital association.
The first 1948 Red Cross Care of the Sick class in Teton county completed with a 100 percent course pass. Certificates will be presented to ten named county women, with classes three days a week for two weeks in the courthouse at Chateau.
In observance of national Boy Scout week, Cubs and Boy Scouts plan a potluck supper and entertainment Monday night February 9 at the American Legion hall. H. E. Culley North Central Montana council executive of Great Falls will speak. Cubs provide the potluck dinner. scouts provide entertainment. The affair begins at 6 p m.
Sealed bids will be requested for a gravity water supply line from the Cowgill addition to the city pumping station and for a 500000 gallon reinforced concrete reservoir. Plans and specs were discussed at the regular meeting with John W Hall present.
Choteau Veterans of Foreign Wars will donate all proceeds from Sunday's turkey shoot to the Teton Memorial Hospital association. The event at Golf Course Hill starts at 11 a.m. with two traps, winners receive birds, and all prizes and entry fees support the hospital. Shooting may last all day if weather allows.
The 60 member Concordia College Band from Moorhead Minnesota directed by J A Holvik will perform Sunday at 8 p m in Fairfield High School gymnasium as part of a two week western North Dakota and Montana tour The group features classical and modern works military marches and novelty numbers and has appeared on KVOX and other Great Northern stations during semi monthly broadcasts This concert follows recent performances in Ruby and Watford City and stops are planned in Fairview Scobey Wolf Point Glasgow Malta Havre Conrad Lewistown Hardin Circle and Fairfield confirms the tour itinerary
ACA committeemen Roy Morgan and Jake Luinstra along with Fieldman John Peterson and secretary LeRoy Robinson of Chateau joined M. B. Bolland of Dutton at a PMA convention in Great Falls last Wednesday and Thursday. The meeting outlined marketing quotas 1948 parity programs and support prices with state and national officials in attendance.
