Petitions seek an $80,000 bond to fund a new 12 room grade school building. election on Saturday February 17 at Chateau grade school from 12 noon to 8 pm. Forty percent of qualified electors must vote for validity. a majority decides outcome. Bids open February 6 at 10 am. district 1 only.
Choteau forest ranger Jack Hinman attended the national meeting of the American Society of Range Management in Billings. D P Fabrick delivered the principal banquet address at the Northern hotel for the three day conference. Delegates came from coast to coast and Canada, with attendees from Maryland and California.
Winnie Wolfe, a bulldog owned by Otto and Billie Wolfe of Choteau, gave birth to nine puppies last Saturday, with five boys and four girls. Three puppies died, leaving four boys and two girls. Winnie lives mostly solo as a bachelor dog.
The Music and Literature group of the Chateau Woman's club will meet with Mrs. C. S. McDonald on Thursday night February 8. Roll call will be a current event.
The Choteau PTA schedules a Founder's day meeting next Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the grade school auditorium to mark the chapter's first anniversary. Honorees include A. B. Guthrie former principal of Teton County High School and Mrs. C. S. McDonald one of the first grade teachers.
Chateau high school faculty selected five students for the National Honor Society for the current year. Junior class members Lyle Crary and Dick Swartzel were chosen, while seniors Mary Ann Breen Bonna Lee Maynard and Dorothy Wiseman joined. Holdovers Mary Lee Baulch and Flora Eileen Graham remain members.
Reserved seats on sale at Koteau High School for the district basketball tournament in Great Falls. Season tickets cost 5.50 and student passes 2. Games run Thursday afternoon through Saturday night February 22 to 24 with the district championship finale.
Montana Tuberculosis association approves $1 200 from seal sale funds in Teton county to aid X ray equipment for Teton Memorial Hospital in Chateau The 1956 seal sale has raised over $800 and Teton county holds a remaining balance around $3 345 after the 1 200 expenditure. The funds also support mobile unit operations and staff costs including a chief X ray technician.
Betty Kelsh of Collins enroute to Meriden, Conn., spent 14 hours stuck in her car on highway 2 west of Ray during a north Dakota snowstorm. She kept warm with clothing and blankets, wrote a memo of her actions, and prayed as forecasts suggested winds would ease. Her vehicle ran low on gas before the motor stopped at 10:30 pm, after which she sheltered under blankets.
Nellie L. Merrick principal of Chateau Elementary will travel to Great Falls Friday for the first state wide conference of elementary school principals. She will record a discussion group Saturday morning and report on teacher visitation's role in fostering in service growth.
Orbie D. Embedy aged 23 of Conrad and Ellen Jaconetty aged 19 of Chateau received a marriage license last Saturday. The pairing appears in the county records as officially licensed spouses.
The Teton county draft board asked to be excused from inducting more men until the status of Hutterites and other conscientious objectors is clarified. Board Chairman J E Gleason said the delay follows a letter to Brig. Gen. Spencer H Mitchell and noted the board may resign if deferment provisions for objectors stay. Helena Mitchell indicated the request likely could be granted if reasonable.
The Chateau Home Demonstration Club meets at Mrs A O Belquam's home on Tuesday February 6 at 2 pm with Mrs H D Moulton as co host.
Mrs. Dave Andersen was notified Linda McKee daughter of Mr and Mrs Ray McKee was killed in Chinook Wednesday morning when struck by a train.
E J Gallaghan state service officer for the Montana Veterans Welfare commission urges Teton county servicemen to talk with creditors before enlistment or draft. He notes that the Civil Relief Act does not cancel debts but offers limited relief and legal aid, and outlines reemployment rights and power of attorney options for service members.
A large wooden garage in Bynum burned Friday night starting around 7 p.m. Link Humble spotted the blaze as Chateau firemen arrived to find the building collapsing. The structure, valued at 8 000 to 10 000 dollars, was insured only lightly and most property inside was lost. The fire likely started in the upstairs area from faulty flues. Inside was a school heating stoker from the Bynum school, now lost, complicating school operations in cold weather. Only a body shop remains for local garage service.
The fourth annual Teton Saddle Club banquet at Moose Hall featured a turkey dinner and dancing. Officers elected for the coming year were Joe Mozerto Jr president Oscar Richem vice president Larry Banks director for three years Helen Yeager secretary and Petey Banks treasurer. Helen Pendston from the airfield gave two readings while German band sponsored by the Moose Judge performed and Ella Trebesch of Dutton closed the program at the piano.
Regional Forester P. D. Hanson announces Montana Idaho Washington and South Dakota will share a total $556,674.12 from national forest receipts for FY1950 ending June 30. Teton County gets $2,193.43. Lewis and Clark district shares $17,372.46 with 14 counties in the district.
Sportsmen's group to hold meeting Friday night at 8 p m in the courthouse of Chateau. Officers for the coming year to be elected and important business matters to be discussed. President Jess Gleason urges all interested sportsmen to attend.
The Choteau Wheels host Fairfield Merchants tonight at the Choteau high school gym to decide first place in the Triangle league. Both teams sit at 6 wins and 1 loss. the Wheels lost their only league game to Fairfield, and Fairfield’s lone defeat comes from Augsta. The prelim features Valier FFA vs Chateau FFA at 7:30 p.m. followed by the Wheels vs Fairfield. The weekend slate ends with a Great Falls College of Education visit to Choteau after another girls game.
The Choteau Lions club faces Choteau high school faculty in a charity city championship basketball game on February 8 at the Chateau high school gym. Proceeds fund school sports equipment.
The Chateau firemen will conduct their postponed January meeting on Friday night at 8 o'clock in city hall. All firemen are urged to attend.
