Postmaster Dr. Gibson Monkman reports December 18 1950 set a local record with 11 060 cancellations. The peak followed 56 sacks outgoing and 69 incoming parcel posts, as staff expanded to handle Christmas mail. December stamp sales reached 2696 95, compared with 2659 49 last December.

Baker to retire after 27 years at courthouse
Clara Baker deputy clerk and recorder at Chateau retires after 27 years of service. She began August 8 1923 and worked under four clerks including Webb Carroll Van Cleave and Hollar. Courthouse staff held a going away Christmas party with gifts for Baker Hollar Elford and others. Baker plans a period of vacation with no definite new duties.

Delinquency Examined by Choteau PTA Speaker

Fairfield Youth Killed in Korea Brother of Local Residents
Pfc Oliver M Fields 24, of Fairfield, killed in action in Korea on November 27. He served four years in the Navy during World War II, and had been overseas with an engineering unit since July 17. Survived by wife in Portland, stepfather August Schwartz, twin brother Oscar, brothers Clarence and Homer, half brothers Leon and Allen Schwartz, sisters Mrs Tuttle and Mrs Hagen. He was a Rudyard native who moved to Fairfield in 1940.

Eric Thorn's orchestra from Fairfield plays at the Masonic hall while Montana Ranch boys perform at Moose hall donated by the Moose lodge. W A Cherry Dies After Illness In Montana
William Alfred Cherry 68 owner of Cherry apartments in Chateau and former Bynum area farmer died at a Great Falls hospital after a prolonged illness. Services were held at the Masonic Temple Chateau with burial at Willow Creek. He married Annie Hoyle in 1907 and leaves two sons Wesley and John, five grandchildren, a brother and a sister.

Plan to regulate peddler solicitation proposed in Choteau
At a Chamber of Commerce meeting in Choteau the group discussed a plan for solicitors to canvas the town. A three member screening committee would approve reliable applicants with the secretary notifying each approval. The idea was not acted on. The meeting also debated membership dues and elected a nominating committee led by Bill Olsen with Jerry Breen and Eddie Howard.

About 57 farmers in Teton and Pondera counties share a 1043 dividend from Pendroy National Farm Loan association. Swanson said this is part of a 248206 dividend declared by the Federal Land Bank of Spokane, with stock owned by 66 similar associations in four states. The local group has received 4604.60 in dividends in five years, reducing loan costs for last year. The Northwest associations serve 16000 farmers and ranchers, with details to be discussed at next spring’s Pendroy meeting.
