After the Nov 30 tax collection, County Superintendent Inez Seckford apportioned 521,525.61 to districts for school age per census and 30,748.70 to three high schools from a 9.17 mill levy. Teton high received 16,237.75, Power 6,876.95, and Dutton 7,598.00, totaling 52,274.31 for the county.
Pat Buckley, Chateau Pioneer and longtime banker, died Monday at his Sweet Grass home after months of illness. Born in Ireland in 1859, he came to Montana in 1884, helped found the first sheep ranch near Choteau, and later became a leading northern Montana banker. He leaves his widow, two daughters and three sons, all of Sweet Grass. Funeral was held at Coutts Catholic church and burial followed.
Warden Theodore R Bergstrom announced that county numbers on the 1939 license plates will be larger than last year. Plates go on sale shortly after January 1 in the counties. Car taxes must be paid before plates can be obtained and registration cards shown to county treasurers.
Mrs. Dan McCormick 65 of Farmington died in a two car collision at 1st avenue south and 15th street. Her son John McCormick drove, four others injured including Clara Lee Jenkins and Lorain Riley. Inquest planned after hospital discharge.
D W Hutchinson, county welfare supervisor, explains WPA rules requiring recent work within six months for certification. He notes calls about certifying single men versus those with families and states the new regulation bars any certification if WPA work was not recent, regardless of need.
County Superintendent Inez Eckford urged school clerks and trustees to attend the School Boards association meeting in Livingston on January 13 and 14. She notes bills to refund insurance premiums, allow bond refunds without elections, revise building contractor licensing, adjust election hours, shift funds from census to attendance basis, and create a sales tax for schools. The Montana Educational association backs district redistricting with related bill excerpts.
At a December 11 gathering in Dutton the Pioneer Basketball League was formed with E. R. Lee of Dutton as president. Member teams include Chateau, Conrad, Brady, Fairfield, Dutton and Simms. Chateau Racketeers beat Conrad M. W. A. in the opener. next games are December 31 followed by January 7 14 and 21 to complete the first half. The league crowns a champion after the season's two halves meet.
An automobile accident Saturday night on Ashuelot hill near Great Falls involved Carl Hager of Chateau. He lost control on a curve, the car rolled several times, he suffered minor cuts and bruises, but remained with the bucking car until the end.
Maurice Black of Choteau notified William Black that their brother Clarence Black, 38, of Bangor was drowned in the Penobscot River Maine. He worked at a Brewer pulp mill and rowed home across the river each evening. The boat was found a mile downstream. the body had not yet been recovered. He leaves a wife four children and his parents two brothers and two sisters.
A large congregation enjoyed a Sunday night Christmas music program at the Methodist church directed by Miss Mae Walton with Mrs. Millard Bullerdick at the piano. Billie Baillie performed Silent Night as a solo, and Mrs. A J Moore sang The Christmas Song with instrumental support.
Mayor John Hentges chairs the Teton county NYA committee formed to sponsor clerical work for local NYA girls and guide eligible boys to the Little Bitter Root Lake NYA camp in Flathead county. District Director J. M. Peterson notes three Montana camps. Lewistown will host a girls training school. Applications available via the Teton county welfare office. At present three NYA workers: two boys at the Biological Survey project at Pishkun reservoir and one girl at Choteau public library.
Dr. H W Bateman and Miss Marion Elizabeth Sadler married Sunday December 18 at the Sadler home in Little Rock. The groom, a Chateau physician and state senator-elect from Teton county, will reside in Helena for two months during the legislature. The bride is related to Mrs. Phil S Cole and has strong ties to Choteau.
Teton county high school presented the romantic drama Another Spring staged by the senior class with special lighting and period costumes. The cast included David Lee James Peebles Nancy Carlisle Blanche Stott John Shoquist Alta Alstad Esther Nordhagen and others under Miss Cleo Buck directing.
Mrs. Pearl Haggerty 62, widow of William Haggerty, died at her Browning home. Fort Benton-born pioneer, funeral at the Methodist church drew many Teton county residents including C S McDonald, Mrs Beaupre, Walter Hitchcock, J E Sullivan and C H Campbell, former Blackfeet superintendent, who traveled from nearby towns to attend.
In a Triad of games at the Choteau-Conrad meet, Choteau claimed two victories and Conrad one as Teton high Bull dogs edged Conrad Cowboys 32 to 22 after a tight start. The FFA team rout added to the evening’s scoring, with Conrad’s Spartans and Ducks also fielding efforts.
Licensed guides and packers in the Rocky mountain section of the Lewis and Clark national forest will hold their next meeting Jan 7 at Choteau instead of Augusta. Mrs. Ralph Allan was elected president, Jack Baker vice president, and Percy Cox secretary treasurer. Board of directors includes Endyl Klick Augusta, Joe White Choteau, H C Arbuckle Dauphier, Wes Aughes Glacier Park.
City Treasurer Fred Barkbal received a credit memo from County Treasurer O G Meadows for 5760.69 representing county taxes collected for the city. Distribution by the city clerk shows General fund 1747.07, street fund 32246.22, park fund 499.16, cemetery fund 499.16, band fund 249.58, special Imp Dist No 3 487.88, and special Imp Dist No 20 31.62.
Miss Joyce Kropp a student at Annie Wright seminary Tacoma returned home for the holidays by air from Seattle to Helena. The flight took about three hours of air time but four hours elapsed due to time zone change from Pacific to Mountain. The plane departed Seattle around 8 p.m. and landed at midnight. Mr and Mrs Kropp met their daughter in Helena.
