Local stores extend shopping hours to 9 p.m. on multiple nights before Christmas. The Roxy Theatre hosts a free movie December 20 at 2 p.m. with Santa giving out treats afterward. Citizens State Bank sponsors the movie. Chateau Chamber of Commerce funds the treats.
Lake G. Watson died at Teton Memorial Hospital Sunday December 7 at age 77 after a week of illness. Born September 18, 1892 in Richmond Indiana she moved as a child to Big Sandy Montana and later to Chateau in 1937. Survived by two sisters Ruth Watson and Edith Van Scherpenzeel both of Chateau and a brother James E. Watson of Anaconda. Services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Banks Chapel with Pastor Norman Graham and Elder R Harris of the Seventh Day Adventist Church officiating. Burial followed at Chateau Cemetery with pallbearers Leonard Sheble Henry Van Setten James Nowlin Ray Nelson Phillip Harris and Chris Johnson and music by Robert Gronberg and Mrs. Ray Ballantyne.
The Chateau High School music department will present its annual Christmas concert Sunday December 21 at 8 p m in the high school auditorium. Lloyd Reynolds says both the CHS band and choir will perform with most tunes in a Christmas theme. Admission is free.
Clyde Jarvis, president of the Montana Farmers Union, will address the Teton County Farmers Union meeting at Sunny Slope Hall on Saturday December 13. The event starts at 10 30 am with a noon dinner prepared by Sunny Slope members. the public is invited.
The House approved 69.9 billion dollars for Defense Department needs including the Safeguard missile site near Conrad Montana. The bill rests in the Senate Appropriations Committee with a Christmas action expected. A New York Times forecast predicts a floor battle over ABM deployment, though passage seems likely.
Choteau mayor James Dellwo told the Lions Club of ongoing city challenges. He cited a water shortage, with a plan to complete a new fractal well by next summer to double supply. He described efforts to relocate a dump ground near Chateau and switch to a land fill system, plus sewer and library improvements and a drive to fund a larger library building.
Chateau Bulldogs travel to Conrad Friday for a conference opener and host Shelby Saturday in Choteau. Veterans return for both Shelby and Conrad, while Chateau seeks balance after a non conference pair with a loss to Simms and a win at Fort Benton.
The American Legion hosts a Christmas party on Saturday December 13 with a 6:30 p.m. cocktail hour in the lower hall, a 7:30 p.m. potluck in the upper hall, and a 9 p.m. public dance in the lower hall.
A trap shoot is set for this Saturday December 1 at 1 p m at the trap grounds east of Choteau on the Dutton highway. Shooters contend for hams and turkeys with sponsorship by the Future Farmers of America. The grounds lie about 1 ½ miles east and 1 mile north of Choteau.
Joseph Herman Suck, 90, died in the Teton County Nursing Home. Services are set for 11 a.m. at St. Williams Catholic Church in Dutton with burial in the Dutton Cemetery. He was born December 4, 1879 in New Munich Minnesota and lived in Dutton most of his life. He worked as a butcher and served as cemetery sexton from 1949 to 1963. Survived by four brothers George Dutton Henry Great Falls Pete Vaughn and Herman Osage Minn and a sister Mary Lockhart Melrose Minn. Rev Harry Butoh will officiate. Pallbearers: James Suek Arnold Suek Eugene Suek Robert Suek Elgar Suek Lawrence Suek. Banks Funeral Home in charge.
Choteau Grade School announces an open house on December 18 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and invites visitors to classroom sessions during the week of December 15. Christmas concerts are planned December 19 in the high school auditorium and December 22 with kindergarten and 1-4 grade performances, followed by December 23 gift exchanges and early dismissal.
The Choteau Jaycees report $5,100 of $13,500 raised for the Villager building purchase for the new library. A Jan 2 1970 deadline from First National Bank of Great Falls could raise the price to $22,000, with $5,000 more needed for furniture and equipment, for a total of $27,000.

Vern Marr announces a two hour refresher course in radiological monitoring to be held in the science room at Chateau High School on Tuesday December 16 at 7 p.m. The program is led by the county director of Civil Defense.
Mrs. Arthur Wells aged 78 died at her home south of Choteau on December 4. Born March 23, 1891 in Maple Hill Kansas, she taught school in Kansas before marrying Arthur A. Wells in 1912. The couple settled near Choteau, moved to town in 1937, and retired to their home in 1955. Survived by her widower, a daughter Adele Meyer of Tacoma, sisters T A Cone of Los Angeles and Mrs. Harry Beach of Maple Hill, and brother J B Young of Long Beach. Services were held at United Methodist Church in Choteau with interment in Choteau Cemetery. pallbearers and music helpers named.
