The county treasurer reports 1938 first half tax receipts total $191 081.77 with 50.5 percent collection, up from 49.27 last year. Real estate paid $167 692.10 and personal property $23 389.67. car tax shows as a new category with $8 231.07 through November. County seeks to retire bonds as 1936- era patterns linger.
The Chateau Cub Pack No. 51 received national colors and a flag from the American Legion through George A. Carroll, and the Boy Scouts donor of the pack flag. Den chiefs accepted for the three dens. Cubmaster Hutchinson announced winter projects in boxing woodworking leathercraft mechanics winter sports campcraft and photography supervised by local men. Three women volunteered as den mothers: Mrs. William Lochridge for Den 1 Mrs. Cecil Passmore for Den 2 and Mrs. Jerry Breen for Den 3. Den 3 led by Bill Breen won top honors in a den contest rewarding flag custody.
The Hanson brothers Oliver and Martin now operate from a brick and tile garage addition completed by builder C. K. Malone. The structure features overhead doors, gas heating, cement floor, updated wiring, new benches, and cabinets with further equipment planned.
A large crowd attended a screening of The King of Kings at the high school auditorium last Friday night. The Rocky Mountain Booking Co sponsored the showing with Chateau Methodist Church backing. Cecil B. DeMille produced the film, noted in the prologue as a reverent portrayal of Christ. Henry J. Heath supervised the projection.
Nick Pambrum escaped with minor cuts and bruises after a truck rollover on a soft shoulder near the golf course road to Farmington. He was hauling wheat for Otto Wagnild in a Chevrolet owned by Gordon Monkman. Millard Bullerdick assisted and a wrecker towed the truck. The recently regraded road shoulder and steep ditch contributed to the accident, which occurred about 6 p.m. Saturday.
The court granted Albert O. Peterson’s recount petition for remaining precincts. County commissioners as canvassing board ordered to conduct the recount, following questions on ballots thought faulty and other contest facts. Witnesses included Hartwick Nelson and others. early results showed Billing gains and Peterson loss as recount began.
E. C. Hensley, manager, announces the new fermentaze loaf at Choteau Bakery. The loaf uses malted grain added to rich milk bread to boost vitamins and improve toasting qualities. Patrons are invited to learn more at the bakery.
IS NOW PROJECT PHYSICIAN Dr Lyall Crary and family are now located in Fairfield, he having received the appointment as resident physician for the Greenfield resettlement after being recommended by government doctors and officials who were here this summer making a survey. He will also have an office in Fairfield with a registered nurse as assistant and an office at the community building at Greenfield where he will spend part of each afternoon.
The Chateau Racketeers, an independ ent hoop organization formed in 1930 under Clint Core, plan to restart with 10 new blue and gold uniforms donated by Chateau business men. Jack Core returns as leader, replacing the cardinal uniforms with zipper warm-up jackets as players like Dick Conklin and Bob Brown join.
Nine of twelve counties communities held elections for soil conservation committees of three members with two alternates. The first name in each list is the chairman and becomes a county director. The county committee will meet December 20 in Chateau for the annual meeting to elect the county committee and adopt the budget.
The American Legion auxiliary will hold its annual Christmas party and gift exchange next Monday at Mrs. Cecil Passmore's home. Rehabilitation chair Mrs Hei Duits leads the program with music chair Mrs Millard Bullerdick assisting, and a large attendance is hoped for.
The Teton Bulldogs rallied from a shaky first half to defeat Valier 21 to 19 in the opening game of the basketball season on the focal court last Thursday night. Valier led 12 to 5 at half, but Teton trimmed the margin with strong defense and fast passing, tying the game at 18 before the final minutes.
Drilling at the Pendroy well on the J B Wellenstein ranch north of Pendroy was suspended for winter. A later report suggested spring resumption with a rotary rig, similar to a nearby Kellogg ranch test well. Bill Hanlon of Cut Bank drilled using cable tools to about 1900 feet after lime caused tool loss and necessitated resuming deeper to pass the tools.
The December session of the Teton county board of commissioners opened with duties including audit of claims and welfare issues. They face a reduced WPA quota of 17 workers while 76 men remain on a waiting list, prompting plans for winter work relief projects in Chateau Duton and on county roads.
Neely resigns effective December 1 and plans to join state highway patrol December 12. City council appoints Marshal King to succeed him. Neely trained with patrol and awaits vacancy. Headquarters in Helena with potential Malta assignment. family remains until relocation.
At the Farmers Union Institute in Great Falls from November 27 to December 3 a wheat committee chaired by Sen. A E Kathan of Brady urged actions to stabilize markets. Recommendations include storage space, commodity loans, parity payments, guaranteed loan and subsidy payments, and protections against world speculators. The gathering featured training for county officers and discussions with attendees from Teton County.
The state fish and game department reports about 13,056,200 fish eggs collected this year at spawning stations. Superintendent John W. Schofield says the final total should match last year, with roughly 4,000,000 eggs each from sockeye salmon Loch Leven trout and eastern brook trout, and the rest rainbow trout. Eggs are cultured at state hatcheries and distributed across lakes streams and rivers.
Bondholders push a federal bankruptcy plan for the Bynum irrigation district to slash total indebtedness from 1,050,000 to 263,000. The scheme, filed in Great Falls, would issue serial bonds dated 1930 with 4.5 percent interest, paid from 1944 to 1968, and require landowners to pay about 1 dollar per acre annually.
Warden Theodore R Bergstrom reports a gain of eight prisoners at the state penitentiary in Deer Lodge during November. At month start 538 inmates were registered, rising to 546 on December 1. Thirty one new prisoners arrived, while 23 were paroled discharged or died. Parole violators returned since 1917 stood at 3.71 percent.
