Mild Weather Ends Monday Highways Open

Unseasonably warm spell ended as an Arctic front moved in with temperatures swinging from a Sunday high of 60 to 45. By Monday the high was 55 with 4 above at Chateau, then Tuesday brought -9 to -19 with 10 inches of snow. Roads are open and no schools closed. Extreme winds hit Kalispell at 84 mph and Butte saw a surge of accidents on icy streets.

Two Christmas Concerts Planned by City Choir

The Trinity Lutheran church choir under Mrs Janet We dum will give a sacred music concert at Augusta Community church on Sunday December 16 at 8 00 pm. The following Sunday December 23 the annual concert will be at Trinity Lutheran church starting at 8 pm.

Black Angus Make Good at Chicago Sale

Aberdeen-Angus herd shine at the 12th annual Cattle Show and Sale in Chicago last fall. Despite being outnum bered to nearly four to one, Angus feeder cattle earned 21 of 35 money awards across steer calves yearling steers yearling heifers and heifer calves. George McCafferty of Belt took second in both the Angus and overall heifer calf classes. Breeding stock for purchase discussed.

Choteau Stores Set Friday Night Hours Ahead of Christmas

The Choteau Chamber of Commerce backs extending hours to 9 p.m. on December 7 14 and 21. Santa Claus is slated for the Kid’s Christmas show at the Roxy Theatre December 15 with a 1 30 p m start.

Chateau Bulldogs edged Simms 48 47 Friday night after trailing by seven with two minutes left. Duke Crary scored the winning field goal with 15 seconds remaining, leading Chateau with 16 points as Geraldine toppled Simms 63 44 Saturday behind Jay Dunckel’s 27 points.

Ebba Griffith Becomes Head of County Republican Women

Fairfield’s Mrs. Ebba Griffith elected president of the Teton Women’s Republican club at the reorganizational meeting held Friday in the courthouse. New officers include Mrs. Jack Exger as secretary and Mrs. Iona Zgoda as treasurer, with several vice presidents named from Choteau Penbrook and Power. Mrs. Crary and Mrs. Ward discussed the National Federation of Republican Women convention in Chicago as the group pledged ongoing support for candidates with national stature and planned at least six meetings.

Monoxide Gas Tragedy Claims Young Matron

Winnifred McNeeley, 21, a former Browning resident, was found unconscious in her DeRusha apartment on Main Avenue. The oven door was open and a paneling gas heater was burning full blast, an accidental carbon monoxide poisoning case. She was rushed to Teton Memorial hospital and released the next day after treatment.

Former Chateau Newsman Joins University Staff

Christian Stevens, nephew of Mrs. Walker Carroll of Great Falls and former editor of the Acantha in 1952, joined the University of Maryland Overseas program in London. A Great Falls Tribune alumnus, he served in Europe and studied at the University of Edinburgh before working with United Press and Writers News Agency in London. Mr and Mrs Verne Shanley of Havre visited Chateau over the weekend.

Revenue Bonds Fail To Carry In Chateau Ward Vote

Qualified voters in Chateau district rejected a 150 000 revenue bond issue for water system improvements. Ward totals showed 54 42 in Ward 1 and 70 44 in Ward 2 against the measure, which would have doubled water rates to fund a 20 year loan.

Christmas Tree Cutting Rules Announced by Ranger

In the Teton District of the Lewis and Clark National Forest Dave Terry, district ranger, said trees may be cut without a permit but must not be closer than 200 feet to roads. Large trees cannot be topped, limbs should be left, and a low stump should remain. Householders should make a fresh cut and place the trunk in water to preserve the tree.

Luinstra Named Texaco Consignee Here

Elmer R. Dial ends a 40 year oil career by selling his Texaco bulk plant stake in Chateau effective December 1. Dial began in Cut Bank in 1915 with Continental Oil Co and worked for Standard Oil in Spokane and Texas Company offices before relocating to Chateau in 1937. Jake Luinstra becomes Texaco consignee, assisted by Louie Clough, to take over the bulk plant, with Dial remaining as a part time winter resident and keeping summer business interests in town.

Seaman Russell Gleason and Seaman Raymond L. Anderson returned to Pearl Harbor aboard the escort destroyer USS Walker after a 30,000 mile Far East cruise last month.

Birthday Celebration Honors Tom Larson At Great Falls Club

A lively party at the Great Falls Country Club honored Tom Larson on his 82nd birthday. About 50 guests, including former state officials, governors and international guests, toasted Larson from his stagecoach days to his 24 years as wagon boss and influential Montana figure. Governor J Hugo Aronson presided as host with a toast versus a minor hiccup as a guest rivaled a pudding spoon. The gathering featured Larsen associates such as E E McGilvra and Ralph Bricker, while noting Larson’s long friendships across Montana and beyond.

Choteau Men at Montana Wildlife Federation Convention

About 100 Montana wildlife and sportsmen clubs members attended a two day Montana Wildlife Federation meeting at Helena December 1 2. Choteau residents Carl Wedum and Lowell Meyers were present. Dr James H Pepper Montana State College Bozeman gave the main banquet address. Bruce Neal received an Award of Merit and Thomas Messelt was named honorary president with lifetime membership.
