Butte Drill Prepares 9 More for Peacetime Draft

Nine more Teton county men reported for physical examinations in Butte as part of peacetime military conscription. Among those listed are Dutton residents Robert Wiprud Robert S Schulz and Jack C Mowlin. Fairfield's Wilbert W Graf Gordon L Hawthorne Kenneth E Holyoak. Chateau's Charles J Rogers Power's Ruben J Dalke and Wolf Point's Leo M Hiltner. The earlier group of 20 draftees reported November 22 includes Roy D Meyer Leslie E Oakley Arthur W Brady and others.

A farm veteran training program is being organized at Choteau. World War II veterans may apply at Choteau High School agriculture building with help from Fred Swingle and forms available this week. Five more enrollees needed to start the school. Earl Bjork arrives Dec 1 to begin year round instruction, first class date to be announced.

Farm Storage and Purchase Plan Loan Deadlines Set

Teton County ACA announces deadlines for Commodity Credit Corporation loans under the 1948 price support. Dec 15 for farm storage grain loans and Dec 31 for purchase agreements and completion of all farm storage and elevator stored grain loans. Papers must be dated by Dec 31 and received by Jan 15, 1949. The county has already seen loans totaling over 3 million dollars across flaxseed, potatoes, barley, and wheat. Weevil and bran bug damage have been reported, prompting a storage inspection by farmers.

Irene Kiefer Weds Wesley Heyer in Chateau Church

Irene Kiefer daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph Kiefer of Chinook married Wesley Heyer son of Mr and Mrs Gust Heyer of Fairfield on Wednesday night November 24 at Trinity Lutheran church in Chateau. Rev A Bernard Gravdal officiated with Lloyd Heyer and Mrs Steve Strong as attendants. The couple will reside in Choteau after a wedding framed by local school ties and service histories.

The Chateau Acantha will raise its subscription rate to 3 dollars per year starting next Monday December 6. The new rate matches out-of-state subscriptions already at 3 dollars as costs rise. Readers may keep the existing 2.75 dollar rate until Monday.

Funeral services held for John Husby in Dutton

Private funeral for John Husby 76 of Dutton took place Tuesday at the W. H. George chapel with Rev. A. B. Gravdal officiating. Cremation followed. Husby, born in Norway July 22, 1872, had lived many years in the Dutton area and there are no known relatives.

Local cards need ten cent postage. unsealed envelopes with greetings may be sent non locally but many lac cards fail to reach destinations. 440 Telephones Listed in New 1949 Directory

The Mountain States directory issued in November lists 440 Choteau telephones, up from 408 last year and 272 in 1946. The rise reflects stronger commercial activity. during World War II totals averaged 160 to 170.

Swanson Returns to Casaba Roster at Choteau High

John Swanson, key forward on last season's district winning Choteau Bulldogs, is back at Choteau High after a stint at Palo Alto High in California. He must complete a 10 day school rule before playing, with a likely Dec 10 debut vs Power. Also back are Jim Jackson and other regulars, except Dr. J. A. March, per Coach Howard Rueger.

Forest Service Man Yule Visits Friends at Home and Abroad

James B. Yule, retired region 1 head from Missoula, visited Cho teau where he rowed with nephew A M Yule and local friends. He recalled teaching forestry at Syracuse and warned Eastern schools lag behind Western methods including aerial photography. Yule toured New York Montreal Quebec Toronto Seattle and Quebec City before retiring last year and visiting daughter Elory at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Jeep Tracks Up Mountain Baffles Hunters

A hunting party led by Reverend Harold Engdahl along with Martin Roeben Bob Taylor and Ora Knowlton Jr ventured from the Knowlton ranch at dawn. They followed an old logging trail into Black Leaf Canyon and up the mountain, claiming the jeep climbed about 10 miles beyond the road end. The Rev Engdahl disputes claims of a phantom vehicle and backs the jeep's existence.

Miss Schroder Wins High Service Award

Frieda M. Schroder extension home demonstration agent in Teton County for four years received the National Home Demonstration Agents Association distinguished service award for 1948. She helped rural homemakers with food preservation housing health and community programs while leading 14 adult and 64 4-H clubs. Schroder, a South Dakota native and South Dakota State College graduate, also holds positions in Montana associations and church activities.

MEA Discusses School Improvement Meeting in Helena

Delegates from the Montana Education Association met in Helena to discuss school finances district reorganization transportation and teacher welfare. They approved resolutions urging 50 percent state and local funding a county tax levy district reform and state oversight of budgets and transportation. The MEA praised the Montana Citizens Committee and endorsed its plan for equal cost division and uniform taxes.

Sixty Five Assist ACA In 49 Program In 13 Teton Counties

At an ACA meeting held November 23 in 13 Teton county communities, three regular members and two alternates were elected at each community to aid the county committee in the 1949 AAA farm program. One of the five members from each community will attend a county ACA convention on Friday, December 3 at 1 pm in the Chateau courthouse. Roy Morgan is chairman, Jake Luinstra vice chairman, and Mr. Bolland a regular member.
