Chateau Schools Plan September 5 Opening
Superintendent R C Graham says Chateau schools will open Tuesday September 5 with a full staff. A pre school conference for new members is set for Friday September 1 to assign work. Miss Nellie Merrick is named new principal and eighth grade teacher. Edward Tillis will teach fifth grade. First grade entry requires birth certificate at registration and birthday by October 15.

Augusta Wins Four-Team Baseball Tourney At Choteau
Four teams Augusta Bynum Choteau Merchants and Choteau Legion met at Choteau last Sunday. Writer's Tour Guests Dine At Seven Lazy P Ranch
Montana Chamber of Commerce publicity director Bill Browning and Toledo Blade outdoor editor Lon Klewer hosted Sunday noon chicken dinner at the Seven Lazy P guest ranch as part of the Writer's Tour sponsored by the State Chamber. Several reporters left the trip for illness or emergencies, including Johnny Mack of the Pittsburg Press and Andy Anderson of the Houston Press, while Ed Shave of Minneapolis did not appear as scheduled. Browning said the tour began two weeks earlier at Glendive and continued toward the Sun River area with Chateau Chamber hosts and Fish and Game Department guests.

Tractor Fire Destroys Buildings on Neiswender Farm
A backfire during tractor testing on Frank Neiswender’s farm destroyed the tractor, a tractor shed, and an oil house in the Collins community east of here last Thursday. Neiswender had pulled a spark plug and was testing compression when the backfire ignited. Firefighters lacked water, neighbors aided with sprayers to limit spread. no insurance coverage was on the destroyed structures.

Larry Davidson Meets Hop Along Cassidy At Service Station
Larry Davidson son of Mr and Mrs Ray Davidson encountered a dramatic moment at Standard Service station when a luxury car arrived for service and Bud Arensmeyer noted the color of the scene. Sheriff Peterson Takes Prisoners To Deer Lodge
Frederick Whetsel Downs Power was tried in the Chateau county court on Monday and sentenced to Deer Lodge for two years on grand larceny for stealing twenty four express money orders valued at fifty dollars each while a relief agent at Dutton. Albert Fayant Browning was sentenced to Deer Lodge for one year for grand larceny in the theft of a saddle from the Hodgskiss ranch. The two men were taken to Deer Lodge Tuesday in the custody of Sheriff Albert Peterson.

Unpredictable Chateau Weather Weeks With Frost and Heat
Weather in Chateau varied greatly last week with days of heavy rain and a high of 85 degrees. A light frost damaged some gardens and possible spring wheat damage is under review after samples were sent to botanical stations.
Rites Held for Mrs Gasperina Menghini in Power and Great Falls
Final rites for Mrs Gasperina Menghini 55 were held at O Connors Great Falls and at the Catholic church in Power with a requiem mass. Burial was at Mount Olivet cemetery Great Falls. Rosary was offered Friday night. Survived by husband John two sons Alfred Power and Victor Great Falls a daughter Ida Pfister Roundup three sisters and three brothers. Born September 13 1894 in Austria she had lived in Power since 1921.

Mrs Clatonia Fitzgerald, born September 12 1870 in Beltsville Ohio, died Monday August 16 1950 in a Great Falls hospital after a six day hospitalization. Survived by son Lawrence Eugene and daughter Lucile Fitzgerald Trebesch. daughter Thelma Alita preceded in death. Services held in Great Falls. burial in Conrad cemetery beside husband Edward Fitzgerald and daughter.

New Hospital to Open Soon and Flower Show Saturday
The Chateau Woman's Club cancels the combined hospital opening with the annual flower show now set for Saturday at the Legion pavilion. County Tax Rate Lowered One Mill
At the August 16 meeting the county commissioners approved the final budget for the coming fiscal year. The county tax levy decreased from 33 to 32 mills. The general fund stands at 162,417.00 dollars, about 50,000 more than last year. Road funds rise by nearly 40,000 and the bridge fund by almost 14,000. Total cash across funds ends at 179,055.39 dollars.
First Wheat Arrives at General Mills Elevator
The first load of wheat for the season came from Corbett and Son of Chateau. Manager Ferguson says the grain weighed 62 pounds and was of a very nice color.

At a Wednesday August 16 board meeting the hospital association voted unanimously to contract with the Lutheran Hospitals and Homes Society to operate the new Chateau Memorial Hospital.
