The County Salvage Committee urges residents to leave used paper for pickup on Sunday August 26 at 11 AM in Choteau. The drive supports carton making for overseas shipments and aids local organizations receiving 11 dollars per ton.
I J Ferguson recalls a Navy officer visit with his son Chief Petty Officer Edward Ferguson aboard. The pair arrived on 19 day leave from Norfolk Virginia to Montana relatives. Edward serves on destroyer Hamilton and survived the Coral Sea battle aboard Elliott.
T G Allison named the new veterans service and employment officer for Choteau, visiting on the first and third Tuesdays with headquarters at the county AAA office. An ex Marine who broke his knee, he is nephew of Herb Griffith, tied to Helen Pike of Choteau, and plans to move his wife and 6-year-old daughter to Chateau eventually. He serves under the U S Manpower commission and the U S Employment Service, with Montana duties under C O Lamport.
Mrs. William Leslie formerly Mae Walton, a commercial teacher at Teton County High School, toured Choteau with her father from Bozeman last Thursday and Friday. She plans to teach at a high school in Ketchikan Alaska. Her husband, a Bozeman attorney, is with the armed forces in India.
The August 6 1945 meeting of the Teton County Board discussed road repairs from Pendrey to Dupuyer Creek and from Fairfield toward Spring Valley. A fire-free period July 15 to October 1 was adopted with permits required for burning. Deeds were issued to Daisy O Genger W R Sharpes and Halvor Tordale, and claims were audited as the board met in morning and afternoon sessions.
Mrs Peggy T Hannan who fell from a 12th story window at the Allerton hotel in Chicago last Tuesday was declared dead from accidental falling by a Chicago coroner's jury. She was 58, born in Chicago, and had ties to Choteau and Great Falls Montana. Survivors include sister Mrs Helen Condie of Oakland and daughter Kathleen Hannan of Great Falls. another sister Mrs Carroll M Shanks of Montclair New Jersey.
Miss Shirley A. Knutson and Rev. Leon H. Johnson were married in the Dutton Methodist church Sunday afternoon in a double ring ceremony. The couple will reside in Scobey where the groom serves as pastor.
Misses Bette and Beverlee Schmidt and Lt and Mrs F J Stone visit from Great Falls for a family reunion with Chateau friends. Barbara Schmidt wed Lt Stone after leaving Teton High in 1942. Pauline Schmidt serves with the WAVE in Washington, D C. Joe Schmidt, former Bulldog star, is a tech sergeant in the Army Air Forces at Salinas California with a wife and baby son Joe Charles Jr. Mrs Schmidt works at the Great Falls air base. Lt Stone flies C 46 transports.
Edwin Cassidy died in a Great Falls hospital after a life in the city where he worked for the A C B Co. His daughter Mrs. C O Edwards lived in Choteau for years. Grandchildren include Marie Marshall Ralph Marshall Dora Edwards and James Cassidy. Funeral held Wednesday at 8 40 from O Connor chapel Great Falls.
The Choteau Woman's Club hosts its annual Flower Show this Saturday in the new Legion club rooms. Exhibits may be entered before 1 pm with judging to start then. Lunch is available 11:30 to 1:30 for 50 cents followed by a flower show tea with cookies cake ice cream and coffee. Public invited. no admission for the show.
Eight Teton county 4-H contestants showcased skill at the district fair in Great Falls on August 10. Betty Kjelleren and Arlene Knowles earned high rankings for demonstrations on washing sweaters and bread making, while Mary Margaret Loch earned reserve champion in dress revue and a special Montana Wool Growers award for outstanding workmanship.
The Wesleyan Guild in Chateau met last Thursday evening at Mrs. Everett DeRusha's home with 31 attendees. Miss Cilda M. Gomes from Brazil spoke on her country, homes, and religion, charming the audience, as Miss Nancy Stenson sang. A candle lighting ceremony followed with Miss Schroder and Miss Gomes lighting candles for America and the group singing Bless Be the Tie That Binds.
Mrs. Howard D. Cunningham hosted Haddie Dean and Pennie at Chateau with business for The Fairfield Times. Mrs. W. H. Gorham, ex Chateau resident and former Wrixon building owner, stayed with Mrs. Clara H. Baker after calling on friends. Morris O. Mancoronal Jr. and sister Mrs. Walter Manseth left for Seattle after furlough, with Manseth visiting Port Angeles before camp duties and Mrs. Manseth joining from Seattle to see relatives.
Mir and Mrs Walt Bailey of Great Falls visited the Joe Home home. Martin Asmus and baby daughter returned home from Cyrus hospital. M and Mrs A Beck and son Ar Wir visited the Melvin Beck home near Fairfield on Sunday. Mr and Mrs Wm Asmus spent time there.
G E Monkman, returning from a two week trip, met Flight Officer Robert J. Miller in Nevada Missouri and Lt David L Bishop in Columbus Georgia. Bishop and Miller served on the B 17 from which Sgt Owen W Monkman is missing since November 26 1944 over western Germany. Monkman also visited his elder son Gordon E Monkman Jr in Columbus and learned he is at Fort Benning awaiting officer candidate school graduation October 9 1945. The trip provided some contact with Owen’s crew and comfort amid ongoing uncertainty.
Miss Cilda M. Gomes of Brazil toured the county staying with home demonstration groups and attending meetings. She spoke at the Chateau Lions Club on V J day and at the Wesleyan guild about Brazil while praising 4 H club achievements in Dutton.
Mrs G R Talbert reports Pendroy social activity with visits in Great Falls and Dupuyer. Mary Porter returns from Canada to visit friends and relatives. Virginia Nelson heads to Belton for a week with Christe Alice Swanson. Harvesting in the area runs at peak with 20 to 55 bushes per acre amid birthdays celebrated at a house party.
Monday afternoon at the M. Schaefer home noted minimal activity as Little Denny Mallberg stayed with her aunt Mrs. Jerome Toenves. Local visits included Mrs. Joe Hombert, Mrs. Leo Keel and sons at John Parks home and a weekend gathering with Mr. and Mrs. Tom Dickson, Cris and Meril of West Hope, N C, plus Lyle Davis and family. The group spent Sunday fishing at Elk Creek west of Augusta.
The migratory bird regulations for Montana set opener on September 20 and close December 8 for jacks geese brant and coot. Daily hunting allowed from 80 minutes before sunrise to sunset. Swan and Ross geese closed statewide. Snow geese restrictions apply to Madison Beaverhead and Gallatin counties.
The Agriculture Adjustment Agency known as the AAA ended on August 20 and is replaced by the Production and Marketing Administration. Roy F. Morgan notes local counties will see no immediate change while centralized oversight expands the field service role and may add duties as the plan is refined. The shift follows a Truman era reorganization to coordinate food production and marketing across previously independent offices.
2nd Lt Ralph E Rowland of Geraldine arrived to visit Mrs Margaret Ray and family. He was a friend of Cpl Robert Ray who died in France in Sept 1944 when a tank was hit near Lezoy. Rowland served in the same tank crew but was in a different tank at the moment of the fatal blow. He received a battlefield promotion to 2nd lieutenant and will soon go to Fort Douglas for reassignment.
Mr and Mrs Wm Morgan hosted a birthday gathering at Fort Shaw in honor of James Burch Jr Some attendees enjoyed refreshments ice cream and cake plus dancing and singing led by J I Burch Sr James Burch Jr and Mrs Tony Faltemeyer on piano Guests included the Burch family Rogers Perry Powers Bagley Oram Kubler and others from Fort Shaw Chateau and nearby areas.
