Marine First Lieutenant Zimmerman Receives Silver Star

Marine First Lieutenant Arthur W. Zimmerman, 26, son of Fairfield residents, earned the Silver Star for gallantry at Iwo Jima. He led his assault company after its commander fell, reorganized despite heavy fire, and directed operations through the battle. A veteran of Saipan, Tinian, Marshall Islands, with 20 months overseas, he is a University of Montana graduate.

Nordhagen B-29 pilot home on furlough visits family

Lt. John Nordhagen, a B-29 pilot with the 20th Air Force, returns from the Pacific after about two years abroad. He trained early on the new bomber, flew missions over India and China, and participated in operations from captured islands in the Pacific. He expects to report back to Santa Ana Army Air Base after furlough, with next assignment undecided and Japan's surrender unresolved.

Harvey Dale Returns Home From Spokane Visit

Mrs Inga Dale arrives from Spokane with her son Tis Harvey Dale a gunner engineer in the Army Air Forces. She stays with her brother Martins Gronberge and family while visiting relatives. Harvey a former Hanson Bros mechanic fought in France and Germany and recently returned to join his brothers in harvesting.

Portland visitor eyes teaching post in county

Flower Show and Tea Set for Aug 25 at Chateau Legion

The Chateau Woman's club will sponsor a Flower show and tea on Saturday August 25 at the American Legion club room in Chateau. Judging starts at 1:00 pm led by county agent Maurice Zimmerman. Luncheon at noon followed by tea. entry rules stress uniform blossom size and stem length with several best-of and specialty categories.

Cubs Hold Enjoyable Ceremonial and Camp

A Cub Scout ceremony and camp at Spring Creek grove near the Legion pavilion drew 68 attendees including many parents. Seven new members joined, eight older Cubs advanced in rank, with lunch and breakfast served by den mothers and visitors. Cubmaster James Van Cleave urged two more den mothers as the pack, comprising 25 Cubs, relies on minimal help. Regular pack meetings occur the second Tuesday each month at the den mothers’ homes.
