The 1958 Acreage Reserve program introduces a Soil Bank base for each farm based on past production. Farmers must keep harvested acreage in 1958 under their base by the soil bank acres placed in reserve. New crops included expand base calculations and influence planting decisions.

County Assessor Fred Woodward reports a total loss in full valuation of 2,305,096 and taxable valuation of 92,400 for Teton County due to a 20 percent drop in cattle values and reduced grain in storage. 1957 full value stands at 37,069,198 with taxable 10,401,115, down from 39,374,294 and 10,493,515 in 1956, while livestock losses total 192,226 and grain losses 78,436. There are also motor vehicle losses from seismograph firms leaving the county, with various district gains and losses across schools and districts.
A donkey softball charity game at Chateau roping in two teams of local players on Monday Aug 26 at 8 pm to raise funds for Pee Wee and Little League baseball. Spectators pay 75 cents adults and 35 cents children.
Choteau High football players must report for physical examinations at the Choteau high school gym Friday night at 8 00 in preparation for an intensive scrimmage starting Saturday. The first game will be at Fort Benton on September 7 with two weeks of practice ahead. Dr Arthur A McAuley will administer the physicals required before any participation.
The average payment for Teton county under the 1958 winter wheat Acreage Reserve is $26.94 per acre. Rates vary by farm based on productivity. Notices have been sent to owners of farms with old farm wheat allotments. The Soil Bank base is set from 1956 and 1957 acreage, with a farmer able to appeal if dissatisfied. Signup closes October 4.
A very successful 4 H Exhibit Day was held at the Pavilion in Chateau August 12 and 13. Demonstrations were given by 22 4 H members with 14 junior demonstrations by those under 13 and five by members over 14. Nine 4 H members will attend Club Congress at Bozeman August 26 to 30.
James Clark Olson and Carl R. Olson Jr., sons of Mr. and Mrs. Carl R Olson, are aboard the destroyer USS Twining, which left San Diego on July 17 for duty with the U S Seventh Fleet in the Pacific. The Twining will train in the Far East, visit ports in Japan, Formosa and Hong Kong, and return to the United States in mid November.
The city council accepted Robin son and Shephard's bid of 3609.20 to install 1156 feet of eight inch sewer pipe with 20 Y’s to alleys and three manholes in Cowgill Addition blocks 4 and 9. Completion is set for Oct 1 in Special Improvement District 32.

Three Choteau youths Dean Schrock Jess Malone and Kenneth Rustad attend the 11th annual Montana Boys State in Dillon from Aug 17 to 25 representing the Choteau American Legion Post and Choteau Lions Club. The event forms eight mock cities with elected officials daily papers and activities. Delegates heard remarks from American Legion leaders Supreme Court Justice Wesley Castles and Montana Highway Patrol Captain Harry Burnham as Boys State continues at Western Montana College of Education.
Nine delegates from Teton County will attend the Montana State 4 H Club Congress in Bozeman August 26 to 30. Leaders include Mrs. Buena Mockmore and Edward Pope, with sessions on family and community living, contests, training and tours. Chaperones are Mrs. Bernie Hatcher and Mrs. Cedric Maurer.
The Montana Fish and Game department announces eight written deputy game warden exams for Friday August 30 in Great Falls. Applicants must be male ages 21 to 40 US citizens Montana residents high school graduates and pass physicals. Successful writers will be interviewed in Helena and may be hired for a one year probation with three vacancies current. James Reardoon made a business trip to Butte last week.
Chateau Chamber of Commerce held its bi monthly session as Jim Jarosimek urged erecting highway directional signs on Highway 89 to guide travelers into Chateau. He warned drought areas rely on tourism for income and urged repeated signage at strategic points. Cedric Schroeder relayed a Pendroy letter about visitors seeking Browning and Choteau due to missing signs. Martin Cantwell of Salt Lake City discussed 89ers Highway Assn membership and a $40 000 advertising plan for 1957 58 along the 3 Nation Highway.

Adolph Dale resigns after three years as Montana Elevator Co manager at Fairfield. Fred Graham Townsend appointed to replace him. Dale plans to make his home in Fairfield. Townsend and Graham bring prior grain elevator experience to the operation.
Additional stepout oil wells have been staked in the Teton county portion of the Pondera field west of Pendroy. New wells include Onstad and Fulton No 1 Thomas and Juniper Oil and Mining No 2 Thomas. Texaco’s No 8 Thomas is a new 35 barrel per day producer at 2 180 feet. Gulf begins No 1 Tracker Madison test at 2 500 feet drilled by Ike Taylor near Choteau.
