Average winter yield rises to 50 to 70 percent cut with protein around 10 to 13 percent and 25 to 30 bushels per acre. Chateau elevator reported values and notes from observers on condition and regional comparisons.
The Agricultural Marketing Service reports northern Montana ranges rated 76 points, lowest in the state, due to hot weather and dry conditions. Bozeman to Billings leads at 96, with other regions showing 82 to 88. Malta to Plentywood is 177, comparable to northern counties. Despite drying grasses, overall range condition remains fair to good with ample forage, but moisture is needed.
A donkey softball game will be played Monday night at the Chateau rodeo arena starting at 8 pm under lights. Proceeds fund the Pee Wee and Little League baseball programs. Admission is 75 cents for adults and 35 cents for children. Local men, including Bob Zion and Dave Shannon, will play, promising a humorous display as neighbors buckle off.
Dr and Mrs O B Giltner of Sheffield announce the engagement of their daughter Sally to Howard Reiquam of Chateau. The couple plans a Sept 21 wedding at St Patrick's Rectory Sheffield. Sally is a Marycrest College graduate and sales trainee instructor at Marshall Field & Co Chicago. Reiquam, a Chateau high school graduate, earned a meteorology master's at the University of Chicago and works on an International Geophysical Year project on the Greenland Ice Cap.
A large turnout filled the Chateau golf course on Thursday for the weekly pot luck dinner. The club encourages broad participation with men's breakfasts, women’s luncheons, and family activities, promoting membership at ten dollars yearly.
United States Bureau of Mines Director Ankeny told Senator Murray that Montana ore could yield high quality pig iron in electric furnaces after concentration. The Chateau deposits west and north of Choteau, between Bynum and Choteau, were cited as key sources.
Al Hensley announced the Hensley Motel grocery unit has closed to be replaced by Hensley Motel Trailer Service. The business will sell trade and service automobile trailers including Crosley Jewel El Monte and Stewart lines. He toured Headway Inc in Bristol Indiana and displayed a 21 ft one bedroom trailer in Chateau with his daughters Helen and Hope Hensley.
The Choteau public school announces registration for faculty and students in late August with class beginning September 3. Seniors register August 28, juniors August 29, sophomores August 30, freshmen September 3 at 9 am. Bus routes will be available. contact the high school office or listed bus drivers for route details.
Coach Chuck Peck announces that Chateau High School football players must report for physical examinations Friday night August 23 at 8 o clock in the high school gym. Dr A A McAuley will perform the exams as the team prepares for the Sept 7 opener at Chateau field against the Fort Benton Longhorns. The squad loses nine lettermen including Foxworthy and Jay Dunckel. returning players include Jaconetty Young Hanson Rustad and others with freshmen also joining the mix.
Bowling managers announce a meeting tonight at A K Lanes to set rules for the coming year and solicit team entries. Last year’s terms offer preferential scheduling. lanes expect automatic pin setters arriving in December.
Choteau residents urged to attend a meeting Friday night August 16 at 8 in the Legion room to discuss improving travel on US 89. Speakers include M H Cantwell executive secretary of the 89er International US 89 Highway Association and Charles B. Martin Montana director.
Mrs Art Wells returned from a two week trip to Tacoma Washington accompanying her daughter and son-in-law Mrs and Mrs Clarence A Meyer who visited in Tacoma and Seattle.
Bil Bailie former Choteau official and state Young Republican chairman addressed the Republican summer picnic at Choteau Park last Sunday. He outlined party aims to preserve individual liberty, keep government strong, balance the budget, reduce taxes, and promote a free market, labor, business and agriculture growth, civil rights, and conservation.
The Chateau Feed and Seed Yellows beat Breen Oil Reds 10 to 4 on John Davis’s two hitter in the opening game. Davis led with two triples and Jim Waltermire added two singles. In the championship, the Yellows defeated the top-seeded Chateau Jivee Maroons as Davis allowed seven hits and four walks. Scotty Russell hit two for two with a triple for the Maroons while Dick Stenson homered for the Yellows. The Pee Wee and Little League rosters wrap up after a Great Falls trip.
The Choteau Moose Lodge awarded 15 youths for rifle marksmanship based on last year’s ratings. Present were instructor Jom Wells and official Marley Kramer who handed out pro marksman and marksman titles to participants including Deri Boussard Carol Ann Howare Mona K Larson Dave Hart Wayne Bond James Connole Robert Burns Howard Seaton Bobby Ann Crocker Robert Hollar Susan Grandal Buddy White Jim Van Cleave Jr Robert Kelly Keith Serger and club champion Serger with 162. The lodge resumes in the fall.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Ebert and children Keith and Susie of Norman Oklahoma left a week ago Monday after spending their vacation in Choteau Gulf Oil Co employee Ebert lived in Choteau for two years
