The 1971-72 Choteau Public Schools term begins Monday at 9 am with a full first day and lunch program. Kindergarten runs 9 to 11:30 am and 1 to 3:30 pm. grades and high school dismiss at 4 pm with a noon hour 11:48 to 12:45 for high school.
The Montana secretary of state’s office lists 488 total candidates for the special primary on Sept 14 with 25 from District 15. District 15 spans Teton Pondera Toole and Glacier counties and will nominate four candidates per party. The party split shown includes 14 Republicans 10 Democrats and 1 Independent among the District 15 finalists.
Public Service Commission announces a change to hearings on Montana Power Company rate increase. A single hearing was approved but now hearings will be held in Billings Butte Great Falls and Missoula with dates to be set. Helena hearing remains Sept 27 at 10 am in the Senate chambers.
The 1971 Choteau diving team finished fifth at the State Class B championships in Kalispell on Aug. 6 after seven meets. Senior Doug Forrest repeated as state B champion with five wins in seven meets and unbeaten in class B. Intermediate Robert Reiding also repeated as state B champion, with five titles in six meets and unbeaten in Montana. Junior Terry Caldwell placed seventh, Rusty Dailey fourth, and Kelly Hirsh sixth. team coached by Mrs. Jack Reiding with Neil Bateman, Doug Forrest, and Robert Reiding assisting.
After a dry June and July, August remained hot with daily 90s except Aug 9 10 when the Chateau Weather Station read 88. The month peaked at 95 on three occasions. Rain totals were .88 inch in June, .52 in July with .48 on July 28, and only .06 inch in the first 17 days of August, indicating continued drought conditions.
Rex Manuel, chairman of the Teton County ASC committee, lists fifteen wheat varieties deemed undesirable for the 1972 loan and purchase program. Eligible growers will face 20 cent per bushel discounts and must certify varieties grown. Extension Service guidance urged.
Fire Chief Art Anderson announces monthly drills on the second Tuesday for extra training and regular meetings on the fourth Tuesday. A state fire fighting school will be discussed at next Tuesday's meeting.
Dr John E Taylor a 1967 Pacific University optometry graduate has joined Dr J R Crabtree as of Monday Aug 16 He is a Cut Bank native who served in the U S Army Medical Service Corps including a year in Vietnam He and his wife Marianne Gillette a 1969 Wisconsin graduate now live in Choteau with ties to the American Red Cross and local Elks lodge
Funeral services were held Monday in Fairfield United Church of Christ for Earl C. Smith 78 who died Friday at Chateau. Rev William Tankersley officiated with burial in Sunset Hills Cemetery. Smith born March 27 1893 at Belgrade homesteaded Winnett area worked in oil fields Sunburst Oilmont and Cat Creek married Edith Parsons on February 5 1913 at Manhattan and farmed Fairfield from 1935. He was a past patron of Eunice Brown Chapter Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include widow a daughter Dorothy Baldwin Fairfield three sisters in California and one in Oregon two agrammen and one great grand and others.
City officials announced new landfill rules with public dumping limited to Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays from 4 to 8 p m at the two city dumps. The airport hill site will accept dumps but with restrictions on wood tires metal branches grass and wet garbage. Violators will be prosecuted for littering.
Teton County will levy 50.69 mills for operating the coming year, raising about $649,570 plus $534,066 from cash receipts. Road fund gets the largest boost to 15 mills, General fund at 18.7, and various smaller levies adjust with inflation. Estimated expenditures total $1,047,189 across General, Road, Bridge, Noxious Weed, Land Classification, Cemetery, Library, General Obligation, and Airport funds.
The Power Public Schools begin Monday August 30 with regular bus routes and lunch program on day one. Dismissal at 230 PM and new staff listed including Sharon Davis first grade and Thomas Laity mathematics. Football practice started August 16 led by Coach Williams, first game September 4 at Dutton.
Health care surveyors Ruth Boyd and Mrs. Louise McDonnell from the State Department of Health visited Teton Memorial Hospital to conduct Medicare Medicaid and licensing surveys for 1971. The review covers all hospital departments except the business office and will yield a lengthy report noting problems. The hospital has two weeks to reply with corrections and plans, with copies forwarded to the regional DH E W office in Denver.
The Choteau Men's Bowling Association will hold its annual meeting Friday August 20 at 8 31 PM at the Choteau Country Club with officer elections and league organization for the season Lunch and refreshments provided by Arvid Sunder Teams urged to send representatives or call Jim Dellno to reserve bowling spots The Chateau Women's Bowling Association will hold an organizational meeting Tuesday August 24 at A and E Lanes at 730 PM The Tuesday Evening League will meet after the association meeting
The Choteau Lions placed fourth out of 15 teams at the Lewistown Invitational, with Cody Wyoming Glendive Bozeman finishing ahead. The season featured strong showings across divisions including midget intermediate and senior, with standout performances by Denise Weinert Jeanne Delino and John Nordhagen and thanks to numerous volunteers for transport and support.
