Winter Wheat Harvest Pace Outpacing State Averages

Locally 70 to 80 percent of winter wheat harvested with barley at about 40 percent in the county. Montana reports 85 percent of its winter wheat harvested—one week ahead of average. Spring wheat 50 percent. barley and oats 60 percent. alfalfa 55 percent cut. wild hay 90 percent. Dry conditions and low moisture forecast persist.

County Fire Responds Twice This Weekend South of Choteau

The county rural fire truck was summoned twice over the weekend to battle grass and range fires south of Choteau. Deputies Asay and Larson aided at Arnold Hanusa ranch, extinguishing a yard fire started by burning garbage. Later, Sheriff Becker, Ernest Dale and Glen Yeager fought a large range fire at Robert Kretschman ranch, aided by neighbors with bucket brigades and water.

Two Choteau Girls To Attend Bozeman Vo Tech

Recruiter Richard Dodge lists Sharon Hoyt and Jill Isakson of Choteau as preparatory students for Bozeman Vo-Tech School this fall. Hoyt will enter merchandising training while Isakson will study general secretarial training as the program expands to ten daytime courses including cosmetology and medical fields.

Second Swan Season Opens in Teton County Oct 9

The second annual swan season for whistlers in Teton County begins October 9 at sunrise. Montana Fish and Game will issue 500 free licenses, with applications due by September 24 at the Helena offices. a public drawing September 27 if applications exceed 500. Last season saw about 200 swans harvested and several hunters praised the birds as excellent table fare.

Choteau High and Elementary schools start Monday August 30 under Supt. R W Gormley with Dan Ferriter as teaching principal. Ferriter, a Butte native, arrives after three years as West Yellowstone High principal and will teach World History and Sociology. Patricia Wightman Dies in Accident at Teton Bridge

Patricia Lane Wightman 18 died Thursday after being struck by a pickup on the Teton River bridge south of Chateau on Highway 89.
