Fires Keep Choteau Rural Fire Team Busy in Grass Blaze Run

Sheriff Al Becker says dry grass has kept the Choteau Rural Fire Department active. Deputy Jim Asay and Glen Larson fought two fires near Bynum in two weeks and a grass fire at Herman Bouma farm east of Chateau. lightning sparked another blaze west of Bynum. Rain helped contain the fires, and other departments aided as needed.

Southard and Hensley Win Awards at Great Falls Fair

Chateau High School students Jane Southard and Mary Hensley won scholarships in the 11th annual Scientific Achievement competition at the state fair in Great Falls. Southard earned acoustics study recognition, Hensley a project on diagnostic testing for cognitive development. David McCray won senior division top prize and a $1,000 scholarship. Martin Jones took a $750 award.

Chateau High FFA Chapter shines at State Fair in Great Falls

Chateau Chapter of Future Farmers of America earned 685 dollars in prizes at the State Fair. The Static Display won first place with a group exhibit of workshop projects. Range judging took first and soils judging second with team members Clark Corey Ron Neckstad and Robert Jerison.

Football Players To Report Aug. 16 At Chateau High

Chateau High School coach Don Knutson calls all prospective Bulldog players to report Monday August 16 at 7 am in the school gym. Gear will be issued and daily practices run at 7 am and 7 pm until school opens.

Shelby Wins Choteau Invitational Little League Tourney

Shelby No. 2 went undefeated to win the Choteau Invitational baseball tournament, finishing 5 wins 0 losses. Fort Benton took second with 3 wins 2 losses. Chateau Legion placed third, Conr ad Americans fourth, and Geraldine Little Leaguers earned the sportsmanship trophy. Fifteen area players were named for an invitational in Medicine Hat, Alberta.

Distress Grain Loan Program Available for Teton Farmers

Distress loans on 1971 crop grain stored on the ground or in temporary facilities will be available to Teton County farmers this fall. Rex Manuel, chairman of the Teton County ASC committee, announced the program to offset shortages from rail strikes and ocean freight delays. Distress loans cover wheat, barley, oats and rye at 80 percent of the basic county loan with 90 day terms, and run until 30 days after harvest for eligible producers including those in the 1971 wheat certificate program. School to Start Monday Aug 30 at Chateau

Superintendent Rob ert W Gormley announced the 1971 72 term will begin at 9 am on Monday Aug 30. Grade school and high school students may register on Monday Aug 23 at respective offices with seniors and juniors scheduled for Aug 23 sophomores Aug 24 and freshmen Aug 25 to pick up class schedules and pay fees.

Glider Pilot Lands at Choteau en Route to Calgary

Canadian glider pilot Andre Dumestre landed his $6000 glider at Choteau airport on a return trip from Sun Valley Idaho to Calgary Alberta. He cited a north wind keeping him from completing the flight and noted the eight hour journey with altitude challenges.

488 Candidates File in State For Constitutional Convention

A total of 488 persons have entered Montana race to rewrite the constitution. Primary is Sept 14. Fairfield Girl Dies in Crash

Funeral services were held at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairfield for 20 year old Roberta Ann Blossom who was killed in a two car collision on Interstate 15 west of Central Avenue West Great Falls. Larry Stanley 21 Fairfield drove an east bound car striking Juan Jose Anaya 20 of Great Falls driving the other vehicle. Blossom was a passenger. Stanley sustained a broken wrist and bruises and a second passenger Mrs James Bell 20 was also injured. Both cars caught fire but investigators said the fire did not cause Miss Blossom death or the injuries to others.

Choteau Swimmers Send Third in State Tank Meet

The Choteau Lions Club swim team placed third at the Montana Class B state meet in Kalispell, as 32 state records fell. Denise Weinert set a state mark in the 100 meter backstroke, while Todd Curtis and John Nordhagen posted near records in the 50 back and 50 butterfly. The midget and junior groups, led by David Hoge, Kirk Dunckel, and Theresa Scott, delivered strong showings with multiple top finishes and new records. The medley and freestyle relays highlighted the team's depth with multiple second place and near-record performances.
