Modest Montana Soldier Wins Little Big Horn Medal
J F Lewis of Ekalaka recalls a Butte Miner claim that Thomas Ward wears the congressional medal of honor. Peter Thompson, a rancher near Alzada in Carter county, Montana, earned the Medal of Honor on October 5 1879 for heroism at the Little Big Horn on June 25 1876. Historian Camp states Thompson twice carried water to the wounded despite being wounded himself. Thompson joined Captain Tom Custer's Seventh Cavalry. Camp explains a long search until meeting Thompson at Alzada. Thompson's tale links to the 1876 Custer fight and Carter county history.
