The preliminary budget lowers the mill levy to 40.9 from 46, with the general fund down from 20 to 18.2 mills and bonds shifted to cash receipts. Streets and alleys need 10 mills, bond interest and sinking fund 11.5, fire protection 1.2, totaling 40.9 mills and a $75,996.45 operating grand total for the coming year.
Mrs Myrna Partlow 74 of 812 Fifth Ave South Great Falls died Tuesday at a local hospital funeral services were held at Croxford's Mortuary with Rev Robert Putsch officiating burial followed at Highland Cemetery. She was born March 27 1883 in Cascade daughter of Merrill Carter early Cascade settlers. She lived in Cascade and Great Falls all her life and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Helen C Roberts Chapter and the Congregational Church. She is survived by son Walter daughter Hazel Eustance four brothers two in Great Falls one in Kennewick Washington and a sister Myrtle Wahn Great Falls plus three grandchildren and several nieces. several nieces.
Dr. John A. March a Shelby physician and surgeon for five years closed his Moose building office and will move to Peru to serve as chief surgeon at Southern Peru Mining Corp hospitals in Toquepala and Tacna once his passport arrives. Mrs March and son John plan to relocate to Helena around Aug 15 with John Jr. entering Montana State University in Missoula in September.
Great Falls attorney Bill Baillie state chairman of the Montana Young Republicans will speak at a Chateau city park picnic this Sunday August 11. The event hosted by the Teton Young Republican Club invites the public. It starts at noon with hamburger sandwiches coffee and potluck foods. attendees should bring their own tableware. Baillie also chairs the Great Falls Republican Central Committee and is a Chateau Public School and Teton County High School graduate.
Thirty guests attended the pot luck dinner at the golf club house last Thursday after two hours of golf. Forty families have paid for the 1957 season and enjoy the course. Early risers golfed at 6 am Tuesday, with Harold Hinman and Arnold Hanusa hosting breakfast. Greens 6 and 7 are being rebuilt atop the hill to yield a nine hole course. Club officials invite all to try golf and bring the kids.
Gulf Oil plans a Devonian test on the Howard and Frances Truchot farm ten miles north of Choteau. The rotary rig will drill NE SW SW Sec 1 Two 235 N Ree 5 W following a seismic survey. Taylor Drilling Co holds the contract and Kullberg Otthouse moved to plug their No 1 Briggs four miles west of Bynum in Teton County after a Continental discovery.
Lions club members from Chateau and nearby towns are reminded that the 18th Bateman picnic will be held next Tuesday night August 13 at the ranch of Dr and Mrs Howard W Bateman starting at 7 p m Lions and guests from neighboring clubs and southern Alberta are invited.
Montana Power replaces 5000 feet of gas main in four alley projects in Chateau. Exhibit days for 4 H clubs are scheduled next week with events across two days. Monday features clothing judging, junior leader meeting, dress revue and talent show while Tuesday includes food and grain judging, judg ing training, demonstrations and the announcement of 4 H Club Congress delegates and award winners.
The Trinity Lutheran church of Chateau marked its Golden anniversary with a weekend of events. Hundreds of parishioners from distant localities attended four programs, services, a banquet, and a potluck dinner. Clergy from across the district sent good wishes to Rev A Bernard Gravdal for 15 years of service.
Depot Agent J. M. Wood becomes new owner of the Lincoln Apartments built in 1949 on North Main Avenue. The Nick Paulus family sold the seven unit complex while acquiring the Wood house. other transfers include the Lucier and Paulus homes, linking multiple properties in a chain of swaps. No prices disclosed.
On August 4 1917 in Pendroy a Great Northern agent Carl Gulbrandsen married Miss Bess Ziegler in Great Falls. A midnight railroad pursuit with torpedoes and double engines caused panic before the bride arrived and received a kiss from engineer Chace Rieben. The Gulbrandsens marked their 40th anniversary with a quiet mountain fishing trip.
Mr. and Mrs. George Seufert hosted guests over the past ten days including Mr. and Mrs. Joe Raby and Mrs. Esther Erickson of Aberdeen South Dakota. The party traveled toward Yellowstone Park with additional visitor Mrs. Wutzke of Medicine Hat Canada, a cousin of Mrs. Seufert.
Eva Olson 88 of Choteau died Sunday at the county rest home from old age infirmities. Graveside rites were conducted at Choteau cemetery Tuesday afternoon by Rev. Charles Nowlen Jr. There were no pallbearers. Born July 18, 1869 in Odessa Russia she came to Chateau with Frank Bealer in 1907. He worked at the Truchot ranch a year before they homesteaded near Agawam. Bealer died and she later married Ole Olson who farmed southwest of Collins. he died about 22 years ago. She had no known relatives.
The A and K Lanes at Chateau will open for the season in the latter part of the month with a date yet to be set. All alleys have been refinished and automatic pin setters will arrive for use in December. The lanes closed for the annual summer vacation since May.
Wi Mo Da Si plans a Saturday potluck at Greta Bush home on the lawn at 2 pm. Members will bring dishes to share and socialize outdoors.
The council approved a middle course plan for street lighting costs. Fifty percent will come from a city general fund levy and fifty percent from a special assessment on parcels actually served by lighting. Unserved areas will face no fee until new lights are added.
Severe hail storms hit the Dutton area from six miles west to 14 miles east and north of the Teton river with the worst damages Tuesday morning. Crops suffered 10 to 30 percent losses in fields, many winter wheat stands cut yet most grain still standing for harvest.
Choteau pool will host a Wednesday meet on August 21 from 1 to 5 pm with entries from Helena YMCA Fairfield Dutton and possibly Augusta. Two divisions ages 14 and under and 15 to 18 will compete in 12 events including back crawl butterfly breast stroke free style and relay races. Ribbons awarded to top four in each event and first three in relays.
The Acantha apologizes for omitting John Woodward of Woodward's Electric and Bob Arensmeyer from last week's Trinity Lutheran Church congratulatory listing. The men were not reached by the paper and their names do not appear.
Senator Mansfield wired from Washington that beginning with the 1958 crop year the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation will add barley as an insured crop in Teton Pondora and Cascade counties. He noted current insurance covers wheat and that farmer interest drove the barley recommendation.
Funeral services for Joseph Dirkes 62 a Power area farmer were held at Power Catholic Church with Rev. Thomas Fenlon officiating. Burial followed at Chateau Cemetery Banks Funeral Home assisted. Dirkes a World War I veteran died after a lingering illness at a Great Falls hospital. He was born August 2 1886 in Albany Minnesota and lived in Richardton North Dakota before homesteading near Power in 1918. Survived by wife Julia two sons Kenneth and Richard Dirkes five brothers and several sisters and grandchildren.
A Sunday reunion at the Bob Dellwo home celebrated Sheriff and Mrs Tom Dellwo. Hosts were Mrs Bob Dellwo and Mrs Jim Dellwo, with all Dellwo children and relatives from Choteau Judith Gap Milwaukee and Augusta, including Annetta Weinert families and the Frank Kusters family.
