Montana farmers report a delayed harvest with wet grain and moisture counts around 16 percent. Early yields vary with some fields good and others below average while weather and showers threaten further delays.
Robert James Batten, 17, from Whittlesea Victoria, begins a year as a foreign exchange student with the Ronald Otness family in Choteau. He plans to study vocational agriculture and sciences at CHS, join the senior class, and help with harvest to learn about the American wheat industry while adjusting to life in the United States.
Jane Southard, a Senior Girl Scout from the Big Sky Council, was among 253 teens from across the United States in Ina Asamblea de San Diego a 12 day conference. Activities included tours of Old Town San Diego State Historic Park Salk Institute and Scripps Institute of Oceanography and a visit to Tijuana Mexico. Final events featured an aboard the USS Tripoli and a flag pageant at the Marine Corps Depot closing on August 3.
Chateau beginners on the Lions Club Swim Team won the meet at Dutton Pool with a large point margin over Dutton and Cut Bank. Perry Breen led midget girls and boys with top finishes including the 40-yard butterfly and 80-yard IM, and the junior division featured strong showings from Rathman and Mor ey. The team plans to travel to Harlowton and to the Helena Age Group meet next weekend.
The men’s softball league tournament starts Friday at 7 p.m. at the Choteau ball diamonds with two Choteau teams facing Fairfield Augusta Fort Shaw and Simms. Depending on standings, teams three through six play Friday evening. winners meet the top two Sunday for the championship at 4 or 6 p.m.
The Nixon administration cut the 1970 national wheat allotment to 45.5 million acres, the smallest on record, a 12 percent reduction from 1969's 51.6 million. Agriculture Secretary Clifford Hardin cited surplus fears and noted most of the 1970 program will mirror this year apart from price-adjusted tweaks.
Gordon Delger manager of the Choteau Meadow Gold Dairy takes a transfer to Beatrice Foods Great Falls office. Gene Nelson becomes Choteau Meadow Gold manager. Clark Russell remains at the Choteau dairy. The Delgers relocate to a Vaughn ranch.
The Acantha corrects last week’s City Council report. It was Ray Anderson, not Ray Hanson, who told the Council after conferring with geologist Dave Barrett about the water works issue.
The Chateau City Council added 25000 to the 1969 70 budget to address a water shortage. Morrison Maierle Inc of Helena is assessing the issue and will present recommendations next Monday. Mayor Dellno expects a new well may be drilled at a cost well under the full 25000.
Chateau Fire Department responded at 3 p.m. to a fire consuming a haystack and storage shed about 50 feet from Gary Richem’s house. About five tons of hay were lost. the shed interior and roof were damaged, two adjacent outbuildings saved, and roughly 12 firemen plus equipment remained hours later to ensure complete burnout. Richem aided by moving burning hay away from the shed while fire officials assess causation and nearby witnesses noted youths in the area.
Mrs. Ethel Blakesley ends a 21 year tenure as linotype operator and printer at the Acantha. She came to Chateau in 1948 with her husband Vern Blakesley who died about 12 years ago, moving from Genoa Nebraska where she worked on Leader Times. She will reside in Plainville Kansas with relatives and may seek part time work outside newspapers.
Nominees for committee posts in the coming ASC elections were announced this week by the Teton County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee. The nominating period ended August 11 with ballots to be mailed to all known eligible voters in September.
Recreation program at Chateau Lions Club reports 250 local children in lessons with 310 youths trained in 1968. By August 11 total swims reached 17,249, about 100 fewer than last year, amid a cooler rainy June. Eighty-two started the largest Poly Wog class, 48 earned certificates as others completed lessons.
Bill Hill, fisheries project biologist for the Montana Fish and Game Department, will move to Chateau this week to oversee fish management across Teton, Pondera, Lewis and Clark, Glacier and Hill counties. He will conduct test netting surveys, water chemistry studies, and tagging to inform harvest movements and expand Montana’s fisheries and recreation potential.
Choteau Traveling Team defeated Valier 11 to 10 to take first place at the Choteau Invitational Little League tournament last weekend. Fairfield finished third and Fort Benton fourth as Choteau also showed strong offense in earlier games and two extra feats by Rod Kelly and Mike Whealy. Coach Jim Spinder praised organizers and umpires for a successful event.
