Forest Fire Near Salmond Ranch Becomes Contained
Lightning sparked a forest fire west of Chateau on Bureau of Land Management land near the Salmond ranch. It burned from 8 p.m. Monday to 11 a.m. Tuesday before Forest Service crews led by Adrian Dargan and joined by Dick Zion Paul Demeule Jim Salmond and nine ranch hands brought it under control. A Forest Service plane aided early Tuesday as crews mopped up to ensure full extinguishment.

Mountain States Telephone Co has changed its name to Mountain Bell announced by company president Lowell F. Wingert on Monday. The Denver offices will remain, and the new name clarifies the Mountain States system's link to the Bell System. The Mountain States company formed in 1911 from several outfits including the Rocky Mountain Telephone Co serving Montana.

Hearing Can Be Requested on Interstate 15
Lewis M Chittim state highway engineer reminded residents in the Teton Pondera area of a proposed Interstate 15 design and construction. Written requests for a public hearing must be sent to the Highway Commission in Helena by Sept 2. If received a hearing date will be set to hear verbal oral or written arguments on the project from four miles southeast of Dutton to 13.8 miles north to the Teton Pondera line.

Father of Local Man Stricken Suddenly
Charles M. Joslyn of Great Falls died Monday night after being stricken at a drive-in restaurant. A 68 year old father of Teton County Attorney Charles M. Joslyn, he helped establish credit unions in Montana and served on the Montana Central Board of Credit Unions and as treasurer of the City County State Employees Credit Union. Funeral services were to be held today at Chapel of Chimes in Great Falls.

The Chateau City Council voted to advertise bids for 805 feet of a new water line in the Hobson Addition with land surveyor Carroll Maynard recommending cast iron and a seven foot east offset from the old sewer. The panel discussed deepening the well, water supply worries due to dry weather, and possible expert advice as two breaks were found last month. Also on the agenda were sewer work in Country Club Addition, a Jaycees survey on a businessmen parking lot behind Rex’s Thriftway, and permit decisions including a garage for Cecil Snyder Jr. and a roof remodel for Dr. Porter Cannon with enforcement caveats. Police Chief Gollehon took a 10 day vacation leave.

Chateau Captures Third in Chinook State Dive Meet
Chinook won the Class B state diving title with 29 points while Fort Benton scored 20 for second and Chateau 19 for third. Dick Dale was runner up in senior boys diving, Debbie Reiding placed fifth in senior girls, Rob Reiding finished second in junior boys, Kathy Wilson was second in junior girls, and coach Mrs. Jack Reiding noted returning divers and a need for more girls in both divisions.

Mrs. Bohnhoff Dies in Africa Missionary Widow Buried Abroad
Eloise Hanson Bohnhoff, daughter of Mrs. Ellen Hanson of Chateau, died July 30 in the Sudan while serving as a missionary for the American Lutheran Church. She had worked five years in Baroua Cameroons and, after marriage to Rev. Lee Bohnhoff in 1962, served in Africa except for a year at Michigan State University. Survivors include her widower and several children, siblings, and extended family. she was buried in Africa.

From early June visitors from across the world register at the Teton Trail Museum noting 4737 guests since late June. The KOA Kampground opened June 1 hosting 1771 guests with 482 camping units and international arrivals from Europe and Canada. The city park campground has stayed near full through July with fishing and slide shows by the Chamber of Commerce.

Harold L. Moon 42 formerly of Pendroy drowned in the Flathead River last week. Born in Conrad, he studied in Pendroy and at a Great Falls business college. He worked 15 years as a partsman for H and O Auto Supply in Havre and lived in Coram Kalispell before his death. Survivors include three daughters Marilyn Moon in Great Falls Martha Kelley Portland Susan Moon Cut Bank. two brothers Irvin Augusta and Bertrand Columbia Falls. Services were Monday in Columbia Falls.
