The Choteau City Council voted to call for bids on a new garbage truck with specified heavy duty features. Bids must be received by the city clerk by 8 p.m. August 21 and opened then, with final actions planned after the specifications review.
The local high school age baseball squad will enter the American Legion Class B league next year, with Mike Dellno coaching and Shorty Whealey assisting. Dellno will oversee the transition after his first college year at Dillon, aiming for a strong, veteran lineup.
The Cave Mountain Recreation Area near Windy Ford in the Teton drainage is effectively complete and opens to the public by Aug. 19. It features a 14 unit campground, end-of-the-road facility, four toilet buildings, wells, tables, fireplaces, tent pads, feed bunks, hitch racks and an unloading ramp.
Clark Ison a federal compliance specialist from Washington DC toured the Chateau ASC office in Teton county. He is surveying the 16 state area Montana Colorado Minnesota California Texas Pennsylvania Michigan Virginia North Carolina Nebraska Indiana Georgia Alabama Mississippi Louisiana. He aims to report by October and set guidelines for next year. Farmers show initial hesitancy then acceptance as ownership of the program grows.
Tom Dellwo son of Mr and Mrs James Dellwo Chateau finished year two at West Point New York this summer training at Ft Carson Colorado as assistant executive officer to an artillery battalion He plans overload credits in advanced math aims to graduate in 1969 with a general engineering degree and a second lieutenant commission He ranked 204 of 800 last year and earned the Dean's honor list He expects a hard academic year and an Army officer career in artillery. Dellwo is the second Chateau resident chosen for the academy following Vietnam casualty James Underwood. He entered in 1965 after graduating Chateau High School and receiving a Lee Metcalf senatorial appointment. He will take a Navy Air Force exchange next spring before guiding fourth classmen at West Point.
Sidney led the Class B state championship with 715 points to win a third title while Chinook took second with 480 points and Choteau finished third. The meet featured numerous medals and records including a junior medley win by John Breen and a state relay record by the junior girls freestyle team.
Ray Kelly, county extension agent, says Teton county farmers face a poorer year for spring grain and barley due to drought, insects, and lodging. Winter wheat should yield average to good, but weeds and wild oats challenge fields despite some weed control progress. Grasshopper damage in Dutton Power area and risk of early frost threaten harvest. overall winter wheat may be average, while spring crops depend on weather and moisture. Tours of county crops proved highly successful with 35 to 40 participants focusing on wild oat control and experimental plots.
The Choteau FFA Soils and Range Judging team won first place in both events at the state fair in Great Falls. Members Tom Stott Clarence Pearson and Jay Rice led a field of 12 teams with Rice named high point and Stott second in range. Rice also topped soils. The squad earned $351 in prize money and may advance to the national contest in Oklahoma City next spring.
Rex Manuel, ASC county chairman, urges that community committees be filled by the best available people. Nominations close Aug. 21 with elections by mail in September. voting and petitions open to all eligible farmers and ranchers, with write‑ins allowed. Committeemen operate programs to conserve resources and stabilize prices.
Captain and Mrs. Mike Tietge welcomed Jill Rene, a daughter born August 2 at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base North Carolina. The girl weighed 6 pounds 9 ounces and measured 21 inches. She has a brother, Mark, age three. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. W H Vance.
Two small lightning fires were suppressed in the Bob Marshall Wilderness of the Lewis and Clark National Forest last week. Beartop lookout Dick Zion of Choteau spotted the first blaze on Friday August 4, and an aerial patrol plane reported the second on Monday August 7. Tim Coulter of Norman Oklahoma and Ron Gollehon of Choteau extinguished both fires. Ranger Higgins warned that despite recent rains the fire danger remains high and cautioned against cigarettes and campfires in forest areas.
Mrs Ray Kelly has returned home after about three weeks in Spokane where she underwent open heart surgery. She spent about a week in Bozeman with her sister Mrs Helen Carpenter who returned home with her.
City officer Jim Thompson said four bicycles were stolen from the swimming pool area this past week. Three of the missing bikes are green banana seat high-handle models. Parents are urged to lock bikes when left unattended and note complete descriptions with serial numbers. Bicycle licenses cost 25 cents and run through 1967.
Tom Jurkey of Easter Seal Rehabilitation Center spoke to the Chateau Lions about school based speech therapy programs. He described local sessions for 10 children, six area locations served by the center, and plans to extend training year round amid personnel and funding limits. Lions president Leo Murphy announced committees and meeting plans while Arnold Hanusa outlined Lions International president Jorge Bird’s duties and upcoming visit to Great Falls on Aug 15.
The Choteau team will host a double elimination league invitational this weekend with seven teams including Simms Augusta Conrad Wolf Creek Fort Shaw and Fairfield. Games begin Saturday at 7 pm. Sunday features loser brackets and the championship. Chateau beat Conrad 15 to 10 Friday night with strong hitting from Hinman Farrell Ekegren and Reisch.
