Teton county faces a banner wheat harvest with an estimated 160000 acres and potential output of 4.5 million bushels. Uneven ripening from a dry spring complicates harvesting and prompts guidance from the Montana Experiment Station on windrow methods and the use of windrower attachments to keep costs down and reduce spoilage.
Harry F. Benson, already nine years in the post, is reappointed by Judge S. D. McKinnon to serve as court reporter for the 16th judicial district based in Miles City. The appointment begins September 1, with Benson and his wife planning to move to Billings. Benson brings Alaska and U S customs experience and is noted as a leading state court reporter amid heavy oil litigation in the district.
County Surveyor Obert Peterson announced extensive road work west and northwest of Collins. The $5,000 project, starting June 16 and now 31 miles completed, uses graders, caterpillars, and gravel trucks to upgrade the mail route road between Chateau and Dutton with new culverts fills and drainage.
Herbert Hoover, the Republican presidential nominee, will air his acceptance speech from his Palo Alto home on Saturday August 11 at 4:00 PM Pacific Time. The event, to be heard nationally via radio, is promoted by Frank Haxelbaker, state Republican chairman.
County Agent Robert Clarkson reports in the weekly state agriculture brief that Teton County’s wool crop is estimated at 600000 pounds with an average fleece yield near 10 pounds. Wool is nearly exhausted from the county, livestock are in good condition, ranges are favorable, and dry weather is needed to mature crops. Hay quality is about equal to last year though rain damaged much alfalfa and sweet clover. labor conditions are normal.
The text explains a setup using three 8 foot binders to form a 24 foot windrow for a 16 foot combine, with three binders on a three plow tractor harvesting 75 to 80 acres daily with two men. It notes attaching a hay loader to the combine, and that wheat threshed from windrows dries better and colors darker, while windrowed grain resists bleaching from rain better than uncut straw.
The Edward family reunites at Ovando in the Blackfoot valley at the home of Mr and Mrs N W Edwards. Attendees include G Edwards and Dan Edwards in Great Falls real estate and insurance, E Arthur Beddyards Cashmere dry goods, Copenhaurer sheep farming Ovando, Thomas Edwards Cerro Gordo, Keng school superintendent and teacher, and Blodwin Edwards. This marks the first full gathering since 1915 with four brothers and three sisters plus parents. Edwards family returns east of Chateau Friday, joined by father and youngest brother en route to Cerro Gordo Illinois.
A Montana health official reports that the first six months of 1928 show 81 fewer state births than 1927, with total births 4 647 versus 4 728. Silver Bow Flathead Gallatin and Carbon show the largest declines while Lewis and Clark leads with a rise. Deaths fall by 228 compared to 1927.
At a Bozeman meeting of the Montana State Bar Association T. H. Pridham, a longtime attorney of the city, was named vice president for the nineteenth judicial district. The association seeks broader lawyer membership and ethical improvement and is campaigning for criminal procedure reform to speed justice. Judge John J. Greene, Democratic nominee for a six year term on the supreme bench, attended the event.
Preliminary preparations are under way for the annual flower show at the American Legion pavilion in the city park. Cha teau Woman's club president Mrs. A. B. Guthrie announced Tuesday that Mrs George Coffey and Miss Ruby A. Miller head the show committee. Mrs. R. E. Nelson will oversee the concluding dance. Sub committees will be appointed to handle duties as details are finalized. The event is a highlight of Chateau’s yearly calendar.
The Lions club meeting was moved to tonight to allow members to hear Messrs Taylor and Duncan on the livestock tour to be distributed via northern railroads, similar to last fall’s Northern Pacific plan. Vice-President Robert Clarkson aims for large attendance in James Eckford’s absence, with other important matters on the agenda.
BE L Jourdonnais and Mrs Jourdon nais with R B Thompson and family travel to Heberg for the annual meeting of the State Press association.
Weather notes by County Agent Clarkson detail that July 1928 was the coldest since 1890 with a mean of 59.22 degrees, lower than the six prior years. May was hotter than June, and precipitation in July reached 4.37 inches with 1927 as the rainiest year in the county’s records.
Qualifying rounds for the men’s and ladies’ championship start Sunday August 12 and end August 19. Members must contact the secretary for official score cards before playing. All entrants must complete qualifying to enter the championship matches.
A studio will be closed from Sunday August 12 to Sunday August 49 as announced by W A Emerick.
Shelby plans to press for extending air mail from Great Falls to the city. Earl Vance, Great Falls pilot and instructor, will speak to the Lions Club on airport needs and costs. Shelby officials, including Bruce McNamer, pursue connections to the Great Falls Salt Lake route to meet thru trains.
