County Superintendent Nellie R. Brown will conduct the county teachers institute in Chateau on September 9 10 and 11. State Superintendent W S Harmon and Miss Sawyer will teach as instructors and the corps may be enlarged before the event.
The rebel leader Orozco refuses to recognize the American consul at Juarez. Los Angeles frets over infantile paralysis with efforts underway to stamp out the disease. Taft notified of renomination on August 1. A US fund of 100000 dollars will move refugees from Mexico and the Texas border to other parts of the country. Hundreds remain destitute.
The value of Montana mine output for 1911 totaled 46,955,287 dollars, down from 48,358,253 in 1910 due to copper curtailment. Gold and copper declines were offset by gains in lead and zinc, with Silver Bow County accounting for 85.5 percent of state silver and affected county contributions. Copper fell to 272,947,705 pounds while lead rose to 6,431,575 pounds and zinc climbed to 43,810,145 pounds as 430 deep mines operated statewide.
Special Services Sunday arrangements are being made by the Meth odist church board for services next Sunday. The events will close the conference year and mark Rev Heizer’s final sermons as Chateau charge pastor. The year is reported very successful financially. Heizer plans to retire for the coming year. Services are 10:30 a.m. and 7:45 p.m. with special music and a public invitation.
The next regular examination for teachers certificates will be held at the courthouse in Choteau Montana on August 30 and 31 1912. The exams will also be given at Conrad and Shelby on those dates. Nexis R Brown Superintendent of Schools.
The Montana State Fair features a sheep dog driving contest at the racetrack center in front of the grandstand. The show honors canine aid to herders in blizzards and storms. Champion dogs from James McLay of Laramie Wyoming will compete, after thrilling Chicago's International Livestock Show. McLay brings his team to Helena for the fair September 23 to 28.
The county commissioners met in special session at the courthouse for road day and tax levy actions. The board as equalization raised taxes in five instances. They will reconvene on the 12th to review protests on Toole county creation and whether Hill county would lose the required 4 million valuation under law.
Local notes report Signe Wagnild back from Seattle after a year away and several residents visiting or traveling to Great Falls for medical visits, a circus, and other errands. The Grange schedules a picnic in Meyers Grove on August 13 with lunch baskets invited.
A party of railroad surveyors, previously seen near Choteau and Toton canyon, is now active in the Dupuyer creek country northwest of Choteau. They have halted at the Amano ranch on the north fork of Dupuyer, but release no information about their plans.
Lake Basin notes say Mrs. J. S. Johnson returned from Havre after visiting her sister. Brack Harris went back to the Burrell ranch to put up hay. The Misses Ruth Young Anna May Faroum Florence Crittenden and Will Crittenden visited Spring Valley at the Vance home. W. J. Crittenden returned from Bozeman after his mother's death. O. M. Gaare and wife spent Saturday in Chateau. Miss Tomena Thornd spent a week at Marmington with her aunt Mrs L Nasser. Mrs Jack Maule of Cut Bank visited with her sister Mrs Frank Harris and Thos Cook family. Henry Young and family visited the Guare ranch Sunday.
Jim Taylor, a Lake Basin homesteader, visited town yesterday with an exceptional sample of dry land winter wheat. The heads were long and well filled and the straw and grain were praised by knowledgeable observers.
County commission plans funding via a $1000 appropriation and law authorizations. E N Hangen and A I Rietzsch rally business and professional support, with advertising canvases across Chateau and nearby towns. A premium list rush is planned and exhibits from Conrad and state fair links are coordinated. An aviator flight series is also hoped for along with standard amusements.
The executive committee of the Republican state central committee directs the state convention be held September 5, 1912, at noon in Great Falls to nominate candidates for 12 offices and conduct other business. Delegates from counties plus at large delegates form a 656 member body with rules on voting and contingents. John D. Waite is chairman and Daniel Arms secretary.
The county treasurer A C Burbank on file with the county clerk reports 107803.82 dollars distributed across state and local funds as of July 31 1912 including the state general fund sinking fund bounty fund stock inspector and detective fish and game warden state examiner fund and multiple district and public funds totaling 60574 36.
The next regular examination for eighth grade pupils will be held August 30 and 33, 1912, at the county superintendent's office in Chateau and at the public school buildings in Conrad and Shelby. Nellie R. Brown, County Superintendent of Schools.
News notes G A Ketcham assistant state superintendent of public instruction resigns effective September 1 to accept a principalship at the Missoula county high school. Also reported is the murder of Joan A Newham near Isigfork with his brother seized as the alleged killer. Daniel Elliott Rouse Bozeman founder dies at Belgrade July 31. Weather office records show July rainfall 2.07 inches vs 1.59 average.
The first annual Parmington Grange number 8 Patrons of Husbandry picnic will be held at Mr J A L Meyer's farm near Spring Creek bridge on the Chateau and Bynum road at 1 o'clock Tuesday August 13. All are invited and asked to bring a basket lunch.
