A 5000 head mixed yearling sale from Wallace B. Chase to A B McLeish at about 4.00 per head highlights a week of rising sheep prices. Power Bros sold 3000 mixed ewes and lambs to Billings buyers while yearlings fetch 4.25 and lambs 3, with strong odds of further sales as markets tighten and hay grows. Antoni B C White notes Fergus county wool clips are lighter on fleece but price averages 21 cents, and predicts wool and sheep values will stay high next season amid ongoing settlement and scarce help.
Judge Wolverton seated for Judge Hunt rules in favor of the government in the case against Conrad Investment Co. Authority limits Birch creek flow to 1,666 4 inches and bars diversions that infringe this right. Government may modify decree if needs rise, and may stop settlers from taking water as required. Birch creek carries far more water than allotted, likely minimal impact on Conrad Co. except in very dry years.
H N Savage supervising engineer in the northwest of the reclamation service was in Helena on Aug 5 after a conference with Secretary Garfield. The reclamation fund was allotted to projects now under construction and will insure the Sun River project extension. Under Sheriff Ganong and Deputy Kunkel recaptured John Wilson in the Birch creek foothills after a fierce encounter. Wilson fired three times, was wounded in the arm, and taken into custody. He had escaped from jail after a July 27 break, was previously jailed for horse stealing, and is sought by Canadian authorities.
T O Larson said the Seabury sprayer is now operating at the Bulbhean springs eight miles south of the Marias in the Conrad field. The next stand will likely be at Charles Crane's ranch on the Teton.
The elder Furman boy drowned with his mother and brother at Simm's creek near Fort Shaw on June 23 was found August 1 in Sun River about twenty miles from the accident site by John Largent, a Sun River rancher. The remains were taken to Augusta for a funeral held last Friday. The younger boy’s body remains missing.
Indian suspect John Chouquette, jailed for grand larceny, escaped from Teton county jail July 27 and was recaptured August 1 eight miles west of Dupuyer. Deputy Harry Kunkel and Undersheriff Ganong pursued. he was returned to Dupuyer, arraigned in district court, pleaded guilty by 3 PM, and received an 18 month term in the state penitentiary.
