The Chateau city council voted to hold a special election on Tuesday Aug 26 with two ballot items City Ordinance 112 restricting dues to owner residences and the sale of city property. An informal vote showed 160 for and 116 against the dog ordinance amid petitions from 55 electors.
The council amended rules to require rabies vaccinations and restraint for dogs amid petitions under Montana Referendum law. Voters will decide on selling land once reserved as a future park and two blocks slated for a library site near Hirshberg addition and Great Falls highway.
The council recognized the land set aside for beneficial purposes has been idle for years and not generating revenue, suggesting sale to collect taxes. They also approved routing the sewer train system along third street to the city limits and advertising bids for a sewer line into Hobson's addition spanning blocks 13 to 19.
A new Big West Swanson well in the Pondera field, Big West No 1 Swanson NE SW NE 27-27N-5W, produced 96 barrels daily after acidizing. The field also includes Winkler No 1 John Campbell spuddered earlier, and other wells Hawley Desimone No 12 Copley and Skov No 5 are drilling or testing in Madison sand depths.
Dorothy Boussard of Chateau won two blue ribbons for a charcoal drawing of Dr C W Boussard and first prize in drawing at La Montena fair. She also earned a red ribbon for an oil painting of a fruit bowl. Her works hang in the fairgrounds art exhibit alongside many oil paintings drawings photographs and sculptures. She studied at the Troditk Art studio in Great Falls last winter.
Word was received last week of the death of Bill Smith in Galveston Indiana. He homesteaded 16 miles west of Pendroy and worked for Otto Swanson for years. In ill health he stayed at the Chateau Rest Home for some time. Funeral services were held in Galveston Indiana on July 26.
Two thefts were reported in Teton county with one suspect arrested for stealing a North Dakota car. Delbert Barlow, 28, was picked up July 29 by Sheriff Al Peterson after stealing a North Dakota vehicle and was sent back to North Dakota by authorities. Bob Garrett, alleged to be from Kansas City, is charged with grand larceny for stealing a grain hauler near Dutton. his whereabouts and the stolen truck remain unknown.
State canvassing board confirms Lee Metcalf by 55 votes over Paul Cannon in the Democratic congressional nomination Western District. Metcalf 13 905 to Cannon 13 856. Also confirms Railroad Commissioner race Horace Casey over Paul Smith by under 1000 votes. Certificates of nomination will be issued by Gov. John W. Bonner.
Harvest of winter wheat is progressing across Montana with yields higher than expected. An elevator manager reported 76,000 bushels collected and good quality wheat likely over 60 pounds per bushel. Harvest in the southeast is about 80 percent done, 25 percent statewide, while spring wheat and barley gathering begin in eastern and central counties as August 10 to 16 is expected for broader spring wheat harvesting.
The Bureau of Agricultural Economics in Helena reported a two point drop in the Index of Prices received by Montana farmers for the month ending July 15. The index stood at 295 percent of the 1910-14 base, down from 297 mid June but above 311 a year ago. Declines were offset by gains in barley rye wholesale milk chickens eggs potatoes alfalfa seed hay and wool.

The first fire of the season in the Teton district of the Lewis and Clark National forest was found at 1 p.m. on August 4 near Green Gulch mouth. Forest Ranger Jack Hinman said it was started Sunday by a carelessly discarded cigarette. Guards Neil Paterson and Snappy Stenson discovered it as it began to grow. crews quickly controlled it and Hinman urged forest users to prevent fires by smoking only in safe places and extinguishing campfires completely.
The Fairfield Junior American Legion baseball team won the state class B title for the second consecutive year by defeating Glasgow in two straight games at the Fairfield Diamond. They edged Glasgow 4 3 in Saturday’s game and then crushed them 10 3 on Sunday, securing a spot in the class A Legion tournament in Helena and a chance at the state junior title. In Saturdays tense finale Glasgow threatened in the ninth before Fairfield halted the rally with an out at home on a relay throw after a single by R Betz and a run scoring play.
A half mile wide strip of hail damaged the 0. G. Meadows farm Monday night with about 50 percent of the crops affected in the county this week.
State reports oats cut with binders as heat and drought accelerate maturation. High temperatures and low moisture push grain in eastern Montana to mature earlier than normal, impacting yield quality and protein levels in winter crop.
An accident one half mile north of Cha t e l caused over 500 dollars in damage with no injuries. Harvey J. Barmelee of Dupuyer, in a 1949 Mercury, sideswiped Julian Stenson’s 1952 Forest Service pickup, sending the pickup into a barrow pit. Pickup damage 331 dollars, car 200 dollars. Barmelee fined 25 dollars for reckless driving. A second crash four and a half miles east of Fairfield involved a 1941 Chevrolet breaking free from a towing vehicle, entering a barrow pit and overturning. no further details available.
Plans are under way for the annual flower show sponsored by the Chotesa Woman's club benefiting the library. The show will be held Saturday, August 23 at the city pavilion. Exact time and exhibit lists will be published in next week's Acantha.
