In Collins, a prairie fire starting in Ben Beringer’s stubble field scorched about fifteen acres for Casper Klette and fifty acres for Alzheimer, with additional land and equipment damaged. Neighbors helped with tractors and fire extinguishers. Beringer suffered a slight burn, others exhausted by the effort.
Teton county 4-H members led by Miss Margaret Conlon earned top honors at the North Montana State Fair in Great Falls with a first place dairy demonstration earning representation at the National Daily Show in Memphis Tennessee. Audrey Lawson and Eileen Reiquam of Collins head the winning team with multiple blue ribbon awards across home storage clothing and handcraft categories.
Pendroy youth Bob Rice sold a 4-H baby beef calf at the county fair for about 125 dollars. Bloom's Grocery of Chateau purchased the animal at 14.25 per hundredweight. County Agent Stanley Halvorson notes the price exceeded the average, and Phil I. Cole, a longtime buyer, purchased another calf for over a pound.
Audrey Lawson and Eileen Reiquam of Collins earned blue ribbons for their Sour Cream Delicacies demonstration in the state contest. Sponsored by Kraft Cheese Co. the trip to Memphis featured leadership by Evelyn Ziegler. Both 4-H youths have long records in foods clothing and handicraft with multiple projects and hours of public demonstrations reaching audiences over 600.
Montana officials announced that local draft boards will defer farm youths until the end of the 1941 harvest season. Col. E M Birely cited harvest needs and possible occupational or dependent deferments when a father or farm operation requires support.
Ole Hendrickson, 76, died of exposure after a spiritualist foretold gold made him seek riches. A theatre janitor who believed the tale joined, aided by Gale Ballard, as they chased a moonlit sign of a goat directing to treasure. The trio repeatedly tried, always failing, and the goat sign became a local legend in the Teton canyon region.
Chateau golfers sent five two man teams to the Glacier Park event last Sunday with participants including Mr and Mrs C D McDonald Mr and Mrs Geo Jackson Mr and Mrs Joe Briscoe Bob Rieckhoff Al Hensley Maurice Wedum Bert I Packer Dr Cornell Chick Sulgrove and Hank Crossen. Shelby Country Club plans its annual Oil Field Tournament next Sunday August 10 with a $1 entry fee and hopes for strong local turnout after two rainouts this season.
W H Wellenstein of the Teton County Agricultural Conservation association warns winter wheat farmers that August 30 is the final date to sign crop insurance for the 1942 winter wheat crop. With high wheat prices, farmers should insure against drought hail rust and grasshoppers as the county office will write applications for all farms.
The Women's Club annual Flower Show and tea will take place at the Legion Pavilion on Saturday August 28. An exhibition of Chateau area flowers is anticipated with a public flower show free to attend and a 15 cent tea served in the afternoon.
