Expedition From Virginia City to Yellowstone Ends With Raid by Sioux
A 1866 overland trek from Virginia City to the Yellowstone River led a mixed party of 25 men women and children to drift on a damaged raft downslope under threat of Sioux attack. Major Brooke rebuilt a raft after a wrecked boat failed, crossed the Yellowstone in a snowstorm to Bozeman, and survived a brutal Montana blizzard on a perilous retreat. Food ran low, they ate prickly pears, and several members carried the vulnerable across the ice cold river in five trips.
