Court halts referendum on state insurance law in Helena
In Helena last Saturday Judge Geo W Padbury Jr issued a temporary restraining order preventing Secretary of State Sam W Mitchell from certifying that referendum requirements were met. Senators Carroll and Garrison filed petitions with over 13 000 signatures from 29 counties seeking to suspend the act until the 1936 general election. The suit alleged fraud in petition signing and clerical defects in certificates. The Montana Record Herald criticized the measure, arguing it would raise premiums and cost the state more than current contracts.
