Field Meet Opens With Stock Judging And Parades

Visitors from rural districts attend the annual all county field and educational meet in Chateau. Stock judging contests begin, with R. D. Cameron substituting for J. C. Taylor. A 1:30 pm horseshoe contest counts toward the grand prize, followed by a 2-day program including a big parade and athletic events for four division groups. Exhibits by local schools plus free coffee and planned hot soup for visiting children mark the event.

County junior records set for field meet events

Stiff records, held by county junior athletes in past years, will be challenged as contestants head out tomorrow afternoon to surpass them. Official scorer G. C. Eddie Core notes figures from the past two years and outlines what it will take to break current marks held by named record holders.

Pioneer Bynum Rancher Dies at Great Falls

Roy McNeal aged 49 a long time Blackleaf resident died Sunday morning in a Great Falls hospital after a long illness. He was born October 18, 1876 in Kearney Nebraska and moved to Helena with his parents as a child before settling in Teton county. He married Lucile Engleman in December 1900 and is survived by a daughter and two sons, including Clarence and Bertram a student at Teton county high. Funeral services were at the Chateau Methodist church with burial in Choteau cemetery. Mrs Engleman of Denver attended.

Bynum Girls Sewing Club Led by Mrs Cook

Bynum will sponsor a girls sewing club this summer led by Mrs Omer Cook. County Agent Robert Clarkson convened a meeting last Friday with a committee including G C Stokes Michelbach E B Noble Josh Lindseth to select the head. Applications will be distributed next week. The community will not sponsor other clubs this summer except possibly a capon club for boys.

Supervisor Myrick Heads to Lubeck District on Inspection

Supervisor E. H. Myrick of the Lewis and Clark Forest departed yesterday for the Lubeck district near Glacier Park to conduct an on site inspection tour.

Hunters Kil e 92 Predatory Birds and Eggs Sunday

Ninety two birds and 380 eggs were tallied by 32 hunters from Chateau Rod and Gun Club in a first big drive. Teams led by E. C. Waldron and F. W. Curtis hunted countywide seven to seven, killing hawks crows magpies and owls while avoiding predatory animals. The drive earned a banquet for the losing side and offered rewards for future predatory birds and eggs.

Pendroy Well Reaches 300 Feet In Utah Test Drilling

Drilling at the X. F. Hoeschen farm three miles east of Pendroy Utah has reached 300 feet. Work began April 21 with two shifts and geologist E B Emrick in charge. The company leased about 15 000 acres and holds roughly 100 leases in the area.

Nan Cole Wins First in Declamatory Contest

Nan Cole of Fairfield won first place in the annual declamatory contest at the high school auditorium last evening. Gordon Holmes of Choteau took second with Plupy's Debating Club, and Bud Burns of Choteau placed third with For Dear Old Yale. The program included other readings, orchestral selections, and glee club numbers with judges Miss Ruby Miller Miss Luella King and Mrs W W Smith.

Eastern Star Matron Coming to Choteau Friday

Mrs. Fred Down of Bozeman, grand matron of Montana Order of Eastern Star, will visit Fidelity Chapter No. 18 in Choteau tomorrow evening April 30. A 6:30 banquet is planned by the arrangements committee, followed by a special session at the Masonic Temple lodge rooms.

Fairfield Grower Expands Sugar Beet Acreage Near Fairfield

Clinton Jensen, a veteran beet grower now in Fairfield, reports 25 acres planted to sugar beets on the Cole Brothers ranch. Last year he harvested 14 tons per acre from 15 acres, earning about 84 dollars per acre, with ground conditioning expected to raise yields to 18 to 20 tons. The Utah Idaho Sugar Co will operate a Chinook plant this fall and freight costs are being covered for beets shipped from Great Northern points.

Obert Peterson Named Water Commissioner for Irrigation Season

Judge John J. Greene appointed Obert Peterson county surveyor as water commissioner to measure and distribute Teton River flow to water users through the coming irrigation season. Appointment runs to September 1, 1926. Also, Mrs. Jennie Gibson was adjudged insane and committed to Warm Springs state hospital. A foreclosure demurrer was overruled. Donald Kerr named administrator of John Egan estate with bond. Hearing for Peter Kiefer estate administrator set for May 13.

Sunday fire devastates Starner ranch barn and chicken house

Sparks from a brush fire about fifty yards from buildings destroyed a barn and a newly built chicken house at Fred Starner's ranch located 25 miles west of Chateau near Battle Creek. The loss included several sets of harness and totaled about $500 with no insurance.

Officer Takes Prisoner Home As Lawyers Seek Next Step

Under-sheriff J. B. Roberson of Burlington Colorado left Tuesday with Marlon Deeds a farm hand wanted for wife desertion after a habeas corpus hearing failed to free Deeds. Governor Erickson honored Colorado requisition papers and Roberson took Deeds back to his jurisdiction while Conrad lawyers weigh a possible stay or writ. Deeds deserted his wife in 1925 and had been working near Conrad.

Gypsy well near Collins prompts summer drill rumor

Rumor in Chateau links L. C. Stevenson and associates to further oil exploration near the Gypsy well drilled three years ago near Collins. If geologists approve a fault in the Collins structure and acreage is secured, a new test well may be sunk this summer.

Forest fire prevention push amid low snowfall

Snowfall in the mountains is only 70 percent of normal and March April precipitation is well below average raising fire risk across Glacier Teton and Lewis and Clark counties. Forest officials urge careful fire use while Boy Scouts and 1400 local students promote forest conservation during American Forest Week and Arbor Day activities.

George Radcliffe a high school student fractured his collar bone last Friday when the handlebars of a bicycle he was coasting downhill at his parents ranch near Fairfield came off causing a wreck.

Tex Dawson a Montana Alberta broncho buster and Mosher ranch foreman lies in a Great Falls hospital with bullet wounds after a brawl at a Gilman dance last Saturday night involving federal officers and an attempted arrest for liquor. A warrant seeks charges of interfering with an officer while Lewis and Clark authorities review the shooting.

All Masons and Eastern Stars are invited to the final party of the annual winter series this Saturday evening May first. The event features supper and dancing with a novel program starting at 8 30, dancing from 9 30 to midnight, and supper served at the close. Gleason Declines Run for County Assessor

Jesse L. Gleason, serving his third term as Teton County Assessor, announced he will not seek re election. He cited private interests and thanked voters and the public for support. Rumor suggests rancher Manley Crawford may seek the Republican nomination, though no announcement has been made.
