Lieutenant Tennant Wounded in Action in Germany

The wife of Lt. Walter Tennant informed his parents that the War Department reported him wounded in action in Germany. Walter son of Mr. and Mrs. George Tennant has seen heavy fighting in France and Germany since the invasion and recently earned a promotion to first lieutenant. His armored division in Gen Hodges First Army raced with an infantry unit to reach the Rhine at Cologne. A recent letter said they were advancing so fast they lost their bed rolls and writing gear, explaining few notes.

County Couple Informed Son James Peebles Prisoner Of War

County Commissioner and Mrs James Peebles learned their son Corporal James Peebles was a prisoner of war in Germany when a January 25 letter arrived via the Red Cross. The family had earlier heard he was missing in action after the German breakthrough in December while serving with the infantry.

Lt. J. Lowell Scott Spends Furlough in Choteau After Iwo Jima Service

Lt. J Lowell Scott veteran of World War II and B 24 pilot who helped bomb Iwo Jima spends two weeks in Choteau with parents Mr and Mrs W W Scott before flying to Great Falls for west coast reassignment. He earned the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross for missions over Saipan Iwo Jima Truk Chichi Jima and other targets. Scott trained at Santa Ana Albuquerque Fresno Tonopah and Hickman Field and served with a submarine patrol unit before rest in Hawaii and the mainland. He is a 1940 Teton High School graduate who attended Montana State College before enlisting.

Cpl Chester Corey son of Mr and Mrs Clark L Corey Collins Montana arrives in Italy as a B 24 Liberator upper turret gunner with the 15th AAFs oldest heavy bombardment group. The unit commanded by Col Robert H Warren has flown over 425 combat missions and first bombed Europe.

Two Former Chateau Girls Buy Rexall Beauty Shop

Reina Kerr and Martha Hostetter, both graduates of Teton County High School, purchased the Rexall Beauty Shop in Great Falls. The pair were formerly Reina Rienks and Martha Rienks, and Mrs Kerr was formerly Mrs Bob Harris. Mrs Harris, son of the late Boss Harris of Bynum, was killed at a Vaughn gravel plant. The mothers, including Mrs Tena So l, reside in Ronan.

Looney Tract Chosen For Teton Memorial Hospital Site

The Teton Memorial Hospital association agreed to purchase the Looney Tract in Chateau for 2.10 acres near the county high school. Clarence Looney offered the land for 1000 dollars after previously turning down higher bids. Safeway Store Here Undergoes Major Renovations

Extensive interior work on the local Safeway began after closing Saturday night. M. J. Griffith of Butte supervises with Steve Strong as local manager. A new north entrance, relocated lobby, shifted checkout, moved produce and meat areas, twelve new fixtures, marble walls, and a refreshed color scheme are planned with an estimated cost between 2500 and 3000 dollars.

Inspector S A Pithol Appointed to Oversee Seven Montana Counties

Named inspector S A Pithol has been appointed state inspector and will begin work soon. He will cover seven north Montana counties. Pithol’s ranch lies near Chateau. He previously ran a large bee and honey business at Fairfield Beach before relocating and operating later on a smaller scale.

Death claims Mrs Carlson pioneer Burton resident

Bertha Mary Carlson 87 widow of John A Carlson and Burton Beach pioneer died last Saturday at Chateau hospital after a lingering illness. Born Bertha Bard in Sweden 1867 she came to the US in 1881 with her parents. She married John A Carlson in 1890 and settled on Burton Bench later moving to Chateau. Survived by one daughter two sons two brothers two sisters thirteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral held at Trinity Lutheran Chateau with burial services at the grave.
