The next contingent of Teton county men to leave here under the selective service act will comprise eight men. They will leave by bus at 3:45 Friday, April 24. Those inducted are Julius Stenson, John Peterson, Chester Brown, Fred Wilkinson and Woodrow Collins of Anateal, Raymond Smith of Bynum, Tacob Zier, of Agawam and Julius Pietz of Collins.
Mrs. Phil Hawley of Great Falls as vice president and Mrs. Paul Kropp of Cho teau as historian led the Fairfield chapter with chaplain Mrs. Oscar Mehl and sergeant at arms Mrs. Walter Welch. Mrs. Packer extends grateful thanks to every member of the Cho teau unit for cheerful assistance in making this meeting a success and to every district member for loyalty throughout the year.
Bert I. Packer of Choteau was elected commander of the Three Rivers district American Legion at the annual meeting in Choteau. Other officers named include William Premier, Fred Roth, Ed Uleberg, and Peter Pavilenti. George A. Carroll named district adjutant. The gathering also discussed bringing Japanese workers under regulation and opening Legion rolls to World War II veterans, with action dependent on Congress.
A letter from Chick Sulgrove at Sheppard Field Texas describes training life in the Technical School Squadron 410 Barracks 183. He recalls a trip to Missoula and Fort Lewis, tests for air corps eligibility, fellow soldiers headed to Fort Callan, and hopes to join the Chanute Field Illinois air corps school.
Four local dogs have been poisoned in recent days as spring epidemic returns. Owners Geo Sulgrove Roy Anderson and Hammie Wheeler reported losses while Earl Yeager’s dog was poisoned but recovered.
Local Boy Scouts will no longer collect waste paper in Chateau. They will handle previously gathered material and ship it to the Salvation Army in Great Falls. Residents must dispose of waste paper themselves to aid the war effort.
The WPB bans new public and private construction except limited cases, with strict material controls. Maintenance allowed for smaller projects. existing builds reviewed, potential halts if materials better used for war. Also limits on coal hoarding, tire recaps, steel wheels on tractors, and a May 31 end for golf club production.
Mrs. D L Boggs 66 died at her son Kenneth's home in Chateau on April 15 after moving from Idaho to Brady Montana in 1929 and then to Chateau in 1938. Born Bertha Belle Haner in Hubbart Wisconsin February 18 1877 she is survived by her husband four sons two daughters three sons serving in the U S armed forces and three sisters one brother with funeral plans pending word from relatives.
Spring drills at the gridiron with two squads and two formations the T and the double wing. Thirty one freshmen sophomores and juniors reported. Rice and Wrixen lead the freshmen while Breen Van Auken Vick Mac Wiseman Hal Jenson and John Smith stand out among sophomores. Juniors G Wiseman Daley Underwood Nordhagen Sabo Stott Robinson and Christfran loom as likely regulars next fall.
Commencement exercises for Te ton county high school will be April 30 evening. Forty nine seniors, the largest class, graduate with no guest speaker as students run the program. Baccalaureate on April 26. senior breakfast April 28. no prom due to costs from war.
The fourth selective service call requires men born before Feb 16 1942 to be 45 to 64 by April 27. Registration runs 7 am to 9 pm on April 27 at listed local offices with a possible Saturday 25 registration for those unable to attend. Occupational and regular questionnaires will be mailed this week and available for help at the selective service office.
Henry Mul and Hilda Roush, both of Great Falls, obtained a license on April 11. Geo E Cassidy and Hazel Grant, both of Great Falls, also on April 11. Arnold Berglund and Grace McDermott, from Fairfield and another location, received licenses on April 18.
