Mrs. Maria Jane Heighton 80 longtime Teton county resident died April 17 after a six day illness at Deaconess hospital Great Falls. Funeral was held at Choteau Methodist Church with Rev. R F Vick. Banks Funeral Home in charge. Burial in Choteau cemetery. Pallbearers listed. She was born January 28 1862 in Nova Scotia and married 1885 to James J Heighton. The family moved to Belleview district 57 years ago. Survived by three children Earl and Charley Heighton Kalispell and Pearl Swift Lewistown, plus a sister and a brother.
Officers of the Woman's club were elected at a general meeting hosted by Mrs. Ted Paulus on Tuesday evening. A Music and Literature program followed a banquet at Beaupre Cafe with guests including Mrs. Fluhr and Mrs. Thompson and musicians Mrs. Fluhr and Mrs. Johnson. New officers are Mrs. Geo. Carroll president, Mrs. Iona Zgoda vice president, Velma Olsen treasurer, Margaret Conlon secretary, and Clara Baker corresponding secretary. The next meeting will install officers on a date to be announced.
A speaker urges making every port a military zone with an iron port command. He proposes harsh measures including executions for traitors to curb labor unrest and asserts the cost of labor leader John Lewis and aides exceeds seventy thousand dollars annually, noting musicians union pay surpasses the president’s salary.
Teton county farmers and ranchers must sign a 1942 Farm Plan by May 1 to participate in the agricultural conservation program. Those who filed winter wheat plans before Dec 1 1941 may still sign by May 1 to qualify for wheat compensation parity and soil-building payments. Operators who miss the deadline will be ineligible for this year’s program and related payments.
Forty students completed four standard first aid classes last week with fifty earning certificates. Names listed include Mrs H W Bateman and Mrs Elda Becker among many others. A second standard first aid class will begin mid May for all over 17, with time and location to be announced. The Red Cross encourages more men to train.
Sugar users must register for War Ration Book No 1 at designated elementary and high school sites on May 4 to 7. Retailers and cafes register April 28 and 29 supplying detailed sales data. Household sugar above two pounds per person may lose surplus coupons unless justified.
A special illustrated story on page 7 clarifies sugar rationing. It explains the rationing card and book, who may apply, beet cane and Cuban sugar, and other points of interest in a clear concise manner.
The notice states surplus limits per person determine book issuance. Applicants must appear before local boards to prove sugar stock reduction to minimum and a controlled rate of reduction. Those who miss the registration dates can still obtain books later from their local boards.

Eight pupils at Teton high school will receive $50 awards at the April 30 commencement by the Heisey foundation trustees Great Falls. Winners are chosen for greatest improvement in citizenship effort and scholarship with local teacher input. Criteria include effort attendance cooperation and thriftiness plus conduct and interest in current affairs and school activities.
John Luinstra aged 38 died Wednesday at Walls Hospital after a severe illness. Funeral services Saturday at 2 PM at the Methodist church in Choteau with Rev. Van Bronkhorst of Conrad officiating. Burial in Chateau cemetery. He is survived by his wife, two children, his parents and several siblings. He and his family lived in Choteau and farmed east of town. Also notes the Choteau Country Club annual meeting electing officers for the coming year and planning Labor Day tournament hosted by the club.
