Voters approved an 85,000 bond to fund a Chateau high school gymnasium with 483 yes and 110 no. District results show broad support except in IvaRan No 12 and Sunny Slope No 62. The levy for maintenance and operations also carried, with 429 to 167 for the high school levy and 225 to 7 for the grade levy.
About 200 parents and friends attended the Chateau Girl Scouts potluck dinner at the Legion hall in March. Notable guests from Great Falls included Mrs. Elmer Bumgartner regional committee member and Mrs. Virginia Spiller executive director. Miss Janet Woodcock, senior high student and one of six Senior scouts nationwide, was named to represent U S Girl Scouts at the International Encampment of Girl Guides of France near Cannes, July 17 to 29.
The Cha teau city council unanimously approved first and final reading of Ordinance No. 123 creating a city wide street sprinkling district for oiling streets. The district will be funded by area based assessments on parcels excluding streets and alleys. The council will define boundaries and apportion costs with the attorney, and the engineer will review oiling plans.
The season begins with a tri angular meet featuring Choteau Belt and Cascade this Friday at 1 00 p m on the local field. Admission is free and the public is invited to witness early year trials and javelin efforts by Ray Anderson and Gene Henne ford.
About 60 teenagers attended a day of Recollection at St. John’s church in Fairfield last Sunday conducted by Father Bernard Sullivan of Anaconda. Talks on practical Christian living were stimulating and the exercises ran from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Father Thomas Fenton celebrated Mass and Holy Communion for the students. Attendees included Chateau Power Dutton Augusta Pendrey and Fairfield youths. The St. John’s Altar Society ladies provided lunch.
Joseph H. Bush Jr of Chateau paid a 100 dollar fine in Justice Sulgnove's court for reckless driving. In Willam Inwin's court last week Wayne W Van Atta of Billings forfeited 100 dollars for passing on a solid line and O Larry Claude Mechinargy of Conrad forfeited 100 dollars for reckless driving and causing an accident.
The Easter egg hunt committee of the Choteau Chamber of Commerce asks local business men to furnish eggs for the children’s event on April 17. Mrs Helen Meltsch chairs. Boy Scouts will collect eggs the morning of the 17th. The Chamber met Tuesday in the Chateau Drug basement and arranged routine business. The State Chamber rally is set for May 17 and the annual dinner will be held to coincide with that event. flyers for Chateau attractions were ordered sent to the show in alias Texas and to the Eugene Oregon Chamber of Commerce.
A Lenten Cantata titled The by the Methodist church is scheduled for Sunday April 11 at 7:30 p.m. under the direction of Mrs Thekna Schiller with Mrs Edne Averill at the piano. The program features processional, invocations, chorus numbers, solos, and a recessional with performances by the church choir and guest performers.
Ellery Crary and Katherine Malone were selected as delegate and alternate to the 1954 Montana Girls State, to be held June 14 to 20 on Rocky Mountain College campus in Billings. Nomination announced by American Legion Auxiliary chair Mrs. LeeRoy Anderson.
A Court of Honor at the Lions Club hall honored Scouts on Monday March 26. Scoutmaster Don Corbett presented Tenderfoot badges to Dick Moore Dean Baker Leroy Yeager Bob Dunckel and Bob Hanson. Robert Armstrong awarded Second Class badges to Andy Anderson Joe Cleave Jr Lowell Meyers Freddie Jackson John Meyers Ekner White James Connore and Jon Huffman. Bob Hickman received a lifesaving merit badge and Jay Dunckel earned a citizenship in the home merit badge.
A grass fire burned weeds west and north of the Choteau airport area, extending from the Jack Baker residence to the crest of the airport hill, with responders on scene in the afternoon.
Dr John Craighead a noted wildlife specialist will give the final Wildlife Forum lecture at the local high school Thursday April 15 at 8 00 PM. He will present a 45 minute film on wildlife management in Jackson Hole Wyoming and discuss his work with the Montana Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit and related agencies.
Mrs Bill Wellenaign slipped during a heavy snowstorm and spent five days in the hospital before returning home on Wednesday.
An uncertain report notes a film about an hydrogen expo displayed to a Capitol audience. It mentions Gov Hugo Aronson and Helena physicist Sweet J painter among viewers and says siren tests were watched with detection far below danger.
The week ending April 3 brought frigid conditions across Montana with a cold wave east of the Divide. By April 2 temperatures plunged to 11 below in Chateau and 12 below at West Yellowstone and Cut Bank. Warmth returned by the 3rd, reaching the 50s and 56 in some areas, while precipitation totaled about .09 inches according to Ray Kelly’s office.
Chateau branches of the Odd Fellows plan a banquet program and dance on Saturday April 24 to mark 135 years in North America. David Buchanan noble grand leads committees with Myrtle Poore directing the program and advance ticket sales handled by Buchanan Shedie Curtis Pedersen Rae McDonald Jolie Monkman.
The annual Easter morning event for area Protestant youth will be held at Priest Butte followed by a breakfast funded by church ladies. Mary Olson asks for contributions and invites local youths to participate in both the service and breakfast.
In a candlelit Trinity Lutheran ceremony on March 30, Miss Jeanette Agnes Anderson daughter of Mr and Mrs A J of Bargo North Dakota became the bride of James Joseph Denison son of Mr and Mrs Ike Denison of Bynum. Rev A Bernard Gravdal officiated. The bride wore pale yellow lace over satin with pale shoes and a lace veil. She carried a lavender orchid and white Bible. Miss Maryetta Lahr served as matron of honor in lavender gown with organdy overskirt and carried a colonial bouquet of white carnations.
Teton county plans a county wide highway safety program with a follow up to state and national efforts. A general meeting is set for April 22 at 8 oclock in the court rooms to organize educate and promote safety on the highways.
