This Saturday April 7 the Lions Pool hosts a full day of activities for Choteau residents. An auction bake sale a matinee movie a dance and a freak show display are planned to keep the town entertained.
Jerry Breen of Chateau seeks the Republican nomination for State Senator from Teton County. A World War I veteran and longtime Choteau civic leader, Breen owns Breen Oil Co. since 1937 and has led local chambers, Lions Club, hospital boards, and airport commissions while backing a Lions Pool Day fundraiser to raise about 3000 of the 7171 dollar filtration project cost for Chateau pool.
Local American Cancer Society kickoff in Teton county sets plans for the April Crusade. State crusade chairman Fred Emmett of Butte discusses goals. list of community chairmen across Dutton Power Pendroy Choteau Fairfield Collins and other towns. Emmett notes Montana’s strong record and urges early detection and treatment.
Seven candidates vie for four trustee posts in District 1, with three three year terms and one single year term. David Buchanan Calvin L Southard and Dr C W Boussard join George V Hodgskiss Bill McCauley and L C Burns as filing deadlines near the April 7 election. Polls at Choteau Grade School open noon to 6 pm with levies of 3.9 mills for Choteau High and 3 mills for Choteau Grade School on the ballot.
Choteau High School students won four of seven grand prizes at the district science fair in Great Falls. They earned 20 superior ratings across grades seven through twelve, with senior students Stromswald, McGuire and Chalmers taking grand prizes for first, third and fifth. Judy Cook claimed the junior grand prize as Choteau's fourth winner.
Bob Swortzel of Choteau was awarded a $250,000 water line contract by the city of Shelby on Monday night. He will install a 25,000 foot line from the Marias River to Shelby and will add a crew to his Choteau operations. He says the Shelby job will not affect local work.
Choteau's A team took the men's top honors with 5479 total pins and the women's team won 4794 as the B squad faltered. Members on the victorious A squad were I DeBruycker A Sundet W Kretchmer B Toenyes and B Luek with the women led by Wilma Toenyes Betty Swenson Kay Sundet Virginia Nordhagen and Rose Truchot. Fairfield B edged the A squad 5216-5215 in a tight finish.
The Chateau Acantha will publish biographical sketches and candidates pictures during the current primary and general election campaigns. Candidates may bring bio data and photos to the Acantha office. Biographies should include age education experience occupation and other voter information. Cuts cost about two dollars.
Robert Dellwo of M A Motors Chateau was honored at Meadow Lark Country Club Great Falls for Ford Motor Company's 300-500 club. The banquet recognized top Ford dealers of 1961 with Dellwo selling nearly $100,000 in merchandise to qualify for the national honor.
Nels Hemstad filed Friday March 30 as a Republican candidate for State Representative from Teton county. A farmer born 1912 in Wildrose North Carolina he lives east of Dutton and serves on local boards including Bethany Lutheran Church Lions Club Dutton School Board Lewis & Clark Forest advisory council and Farmers Mercantile Company board. He holds leadership roles in Masonic and Shrine orders and has four daughters.
Mrs. Jay Robinson installed as president of C. James Smith Unit No. 6 Chateau American Legion Auxiliary by Mrs. David Shannon. Robinson is a former district and depart ment president and former national membership committee chair for 11 states in the northwest division. New officers include Jane Gronberg first vice president Edith Peterson second vice president Dorothy Armstrong secretary treasurer Marion Jacobs chaplain Darlene Higgins historian and Alyce Gleason sergeant at arms.
National Diary Week from April 8 to 14 will be observed at the Chateau library and libraries nationwide. Public hours include Tuesday and Saturday 2:30 to 5 p m. The local library added 16 volumes last year, mostly donated, with library loan cards priced at 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for children. Books loaned for two weeks with renewal privileges.
Deputy registrars for voter registration in Teton county were appointed by the board of county commissioners at a recent meeting. County residents may register at the clerk and recorder's office in Chateau or with listed deputy registrars in various precincts. The registration deadline is April 20 at 5 p.m. Former voters who did not vote in November 1960 must register by that date.
The North Central District meeting of the Woman's Society of Christian Service was held March 26 at the Montclair Methodist Church in Belt. The theme Hear Ye the Word of the Lord was led by district president Mrs. D. D. McKee Kevin. Western jurisdiction recording secretary Mrs. Marion Averini spoke on Talents. Local society reports were given by president Mrs. Ed Schiller. Attending from Chateau were Mrs. ere Mrs. Schilling and others.
The Chateau Chapter of the Red Cross will present a film on mouth-to-mouth artificial respiration Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Teton County Court. The loaned film comes from Montana Power Company. The public is welcome.
Choteau High School bought a 29 passenger bus from Intermountain Transportation Co of Anaconda for 3500 dollars. Superintendent Ed Schiller says the old bus will be used in warm weather and is up for sale after inspections. He debunks rumors it was condemned by the highway patrol and notes the motor is sound though the bus is aging.
The Conrad Deanery vocation conference drew over 50 area youths at St. Joseph's Parish in Chateau. The gathering focused on vocations including priesthood and religious orders. Two seminarians from Helena attended and Mass was offered at 4.

Jack Gunderson of Power elected president with Arnold Peterson Havre as VP Tony Burgmaier Power as secretary and a slate of directors. The group opposes Grain Producers of Montana and backs the state ASC committee amid calls to justify Glacier County ASC’s barley program actions. They praise the ASC’s fair administration and note Glacier County’s criticism for seeking advantage over others.
Mr and Mrs Dale Lange of North Sioux City flee their home as floodwaters advance in Iowa amid rising river levels. The couple plans to relocate temporarily while authorities assess damage and manage evacuation efforts.
Funeral services for Most Rev. Joseph M. Gilmore Bishop of Helena will be at St Helena's Cathedral in Helena on Sunday April 11. He confirmed his first class in Choteau in 1937 and was consecrated bishop February 19 1936. He ordained about 70 priests in the diocese including Father T J Gannon of Choteau. He died of asphyxiation in San Francisco Friday night.

Choteau Jaycees conduct a Community Attitude Survey in business districts and selected homes. About 300 questionnaires assess views on telephone, postal, fire protection, legal, parking, schools, library, restaurants, shopping, and job opportunities with results to be published in the Acantha.
Mr and Mrs Kenneth Johnson and Danny of Bynum and Mrs Julian Monkman traveled to Helena on Sunday to visit their cousin and nephew La Vane Daley who is a patient at Fort Harrison veterans hospital.
Fairfield farmer and grain cutter Marshall Winship filed as a Democrat for sheriff of Teton County. A former Roosevelt County special deputy, WWI sergeant, he has 20 years in Teton County and homesteaded near Fairfield in 1941. He serves on the county land reclassification committee and holds positions at Greenfield Federal Credit Union and Fairfield American Lutheran Church.
The Home Demonstration Clubs of Teton county invite the public to a spring event on April 13 at the Legion hall in Fairfield. Registration starts 1 30 pm with door prizes and a program themed Springtime. Hosts include Greenfield Modern Mrs Sunny Slope and Modern Homemakers.
