The liberal Americans for Democratic Action ADA called for outlawing all hand guns and storing rifles and shotguns in public warehouses as a crime fight measure. Delegates at the ADA 22nd convention discussed the proposal.
Delegates adopted a resolution supporting disarmament and criticized President Nixon as an insinuator and impugner. They rejected gun registration proposals and debated a 3,000 word crime study while backing civilian military priority oversight and restraints on military spending.
The ADA endorsed better police training and higher salaries and proposed a national police pension fund by Congress. It backed Supreme Court rulings expanding defendant rights, blamed congested lower courts for justice delays, and called for massive penal system reform to stop turning hoodlums into hardened criminals.
Asian diplomats warned that the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese would launch a new military offensive in South Vietnam if the Midway Island summit fails to yield new peace talks offers. They said Hanoi and the Viet Cong aim to oust Thieu and form a coalition government, pushing substantive bargaining, with renewed attacks if negotiations stall.
President Nixon, en route to Midway Island for a Pacific conference with South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu, signals readiness for serious negotiations with the Communists. White House sources say progress prompts a pivotal push after Nixon’s Rome Western Europe tour and Thieu’s backing of talks.
Robert Taylor, famed film star of the 1940s and 50s, is reported unchanged in his long battle with cancer at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica. Earlier notes of rapid deterioration were revised to show no change in his condition at age 57.
After 30 years of operation since 1929 with a brief 1933 return, Spec Landrum may retire this year from Fair Park Swimming Pool. Mayor Lyons notes the offer to continue, while the pool has been remodeled and remains open 1 to 8 pm daily with private morning parties by appointment.

Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes weighs a run against U.S. Senator Ralph Yarborough as 1972 elections loom. Barnes argues he has no plans to run but several state senators seek his post. If he stays in Austin, he could avoid a split in the Texas Democratic ticket while Senate and governor races open in 1972.
A Lazbuddie grain elevator explosion that killed one man and injured another may have been caused by an electrical wiring short. Wayne Webb, superintendent, said a series of three blasts rocked Lazbuddie and surrounding area Friday and Saturday as debris and dust fires followed the initial explosion.

A Master Mason degree will be conferred at 7 30 p m Tuesday during the Masonic Lodge 695 meeting. All Masons are invited to attend.

Fire crews battled five small blazes Friday afternoon in Childress. The incidents included trash and grass fires at multiple locations plus a fence fire. Notable calls occurred at 1:50 p.m. on Avenue I Northwest and 2:10 p.m. on Avenue I Northwest, with later fires at 2:20 p.m. Kirkland, 4 p.m. Avenue I Southwest, and 7:45 p.m. at Fair Park near Rodeo Grounds.
The Ministerial Alliance will meet at 10 a.m. Monday in Holy Angels Rectory to discuss community affairs and upcoming activities.
Gus Mutscher Texas House speaker and Donna Axum Miss America staged vows in an Austin chapel ceremony attended by Gov. Preston Smith and Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes among about 150 political associates. Mutscher, a Brenham rancher, becomes the second Texas speaker to marry in office. previous was in the 1840s.
Soviet leader Brezhnev told a world Communist summit in the Kremlin that Red China was planning a nuclear war against Russia. He warned Peking that Russia has strong defenses and will not be frightened. He also accused Mao Zedong of border provocations and unfounded territorial claims, prompting a fiery exchange at the unity conference with about 75 parties present.
Expansion of Gibson's Discount Center in Childress was announced Saturday by owner Alex Saied. Work starts Monday on the expansion, the second expansion for Gibson's in the area.
U.S. infantrymen repelled a Communist assault on an outpost near the Cambodian frontier and reported 323 North Vietnamese regulars killed. Two Americans were wounded. Nearby, a force of about 400 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong held a surrounded hamlet near Tay Ninh as 1,000 American and South Vietnamese troops encircled it. War planes bombed the area amid renewed attacks tied to the Midway Island talks between Nixon and Thieu. Official tallies on enemy losses remained vague, with reports of well over 1,000 KIA across the new wave.
Robert A. Gartland displays watercolors oils pen and ink drawings and charcoal and egg tempera works in downtown Childress with help from Mrs. Aldene Fox. The artist born in 1927 in Mt. Vernon New York has work in 70 private collections and aims for exhibits at Panhandle Plains Museum and Westex Museum later this year.
Staff Sergeant Sharon A. Williams daughter in law of Mr and Mrs G A Williams of Childress received the U S Air Force Commendation Medal at Eglin AFB Florida for outstanding duty performance. She is an administrative specialist with a Tactical Air Command unit. Her husband Lynn David Williams is also stationed at Eglin.
The graduation class of 1969 established a memorial fund for John Kirk Ball to purchase an appropriate article for the new high school. Contributions may be given at Henderson Lumber Co.
Childress County residents may meet with Edwin S Craughon Vernon office representative at 10 a.m. Monday on the first floor of the courthouse to file applications or ask questions about social security.
Funeral services for Mrs. Floyd Lois Ragsdale 64 are set for 4 p m today at Coley Memorial Chapel Hollis Oklahoma. Pastor Roy Thomas will conduct with interment in Fairmont Cemetery. She died Saturday in Harmon Memorial Hospital after a yearlong illness. She had lived in Hollis since 1913. Survivors include husband Floyd, daughter Chesna Simmons, four sisters, three brothers, and three grandchildren.
The second Driver Education Class will begin at 8 a.m. Monday in the Ag Room of the agriculture building at the high school, announced Principal James Ieenhower. Classes will run two hours from 8 to 10 a.m. The first class has been in progress for the past week.
