The Supreme Court by 7 to 0 ruled broadcasters can be ordered to air opposing views under the fairness doctrine. Justice White said FCC authority does not violate the First Amendment. Also briefs from Paris and Saigon report Viet Cong and NLF denouncing Nixon troop withdrawals. A separate note from Thieu warns against coalition talks with communists. A Parkerburg fire reports a flash blaze damages an eight room structure.
Santa Monica actor Robert Taylor, 57, dies at St Johns hospital after fighting terminal cancer. He quit smoking before his October lung operation, vowing to beat the habit. The former matinee idol faced mockery as a “pretty boy” amid public attention. Don Ray Dorchardt receives six months probation for DWI with $142 fines and 15 days jail.
Paducah athlete Mushinski has been selected by the Greenbelt Athletic Corporation to represent Paducah at the Greenbelt Football Classic on August 14 at Childress. He earned All-District honors two years and the Wilkey O. Jones III Sportsmanship Award and also starred in basketball and track. He chose Franceline Tippen as queen candidate for Friday night events before the game.
A call was issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety inviting applicants to join a recruit training school set for July. Eligibility requires ages 20 to 35 and a minimum height of 68 inches with a weight between two pounds and three and one half pounds.
All members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars are asked to attend the meeting Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Veterans Building.
Washington UPI A bill to exempt cigarette commercials from regulation faced challenges as House Commerce Chair Harley Staggers urged a repeat session with NAB President Vincent Wasilewski. Allegations the NAB stopped reviewing ads over a year ago prompted possible bill changes and delay.
Sen. Abraham Ribicoff after a college tour predicts a quick drop in campus violence as moderate students challenge the SDS. He dismisses demands for autonomous or segregated black studies and proposes nationwide post high school compensatory colleges to prepare disadvantaged youths for work or college.
Camp training for leaders will be held Thursday in the Wesley Room of First United Methodist Church. Sessions run 9 30 a m to 2 p m and are supervised by the NorCenTex Council in Wichita Falls.
Ben Eston Meetze, 57, a Childress native, died after falling from a grain car at Bomarton Elevators west of Seymour around 10:20 p.m. Saturday. Funeral services were to be held at 4 p.m. today at Seymour First United Methodist Church. Burial in Riverview Cemetery. Survivors include his Arlington wife, two sons Harry Eston of Arlington and Benny Dwight of Dallas, a brother Leslie of Amarillo, and a sister Mrs. Lois White of Odes.
Funeral services for Elizabeth Lassen 81 of Childress will be at 10 am Tuesday at King Memorial Methodist Church conducted by Rev. A. N. Motes. Interment in Childress Cemetery. Survivors: two sons Raymond and Emil Jr. sister Mrs. Willie Bolding. seven grandchildren. nine great grandchildren.
In Juneau Alaska a fruitless search for a missing Strategic Air Command plane with 19 aboard yielded only misleading sightings. Coast Guard officials reported orange objects spotted over the weekend but were inconclusive after closer checks.
President Nixon announced plans to pull 25,000 U.S. troops from Vietnam by the end of August with some forces returning home as conditions permit. South Vietnamese troops will replace them, and initial withdrawals may route personnel to Okinawa and Hawaii.
A cold front brought hail and high winds to the South Plains Sunday ending a peaceful Texas weekend. A sighting of a tornado near Morton was reported by a unnamed man to Littlefield police, though Morton police chief Charlie Ellis doubted it. No damage was recorded in Morton.
In Subic Bay Philippines a six nation board of inquiry began work on the Melbourne Evans crash that killed 74 sailors. Rear Adm Crabb testified a ship passed within 50 feet of the Melbourne in a near collision ahead of the incident. The hearing proceeded in closed session away from reporters as investigators seek facts about the May 31 near miss.
More than 6000 members of UAW Local 218 walked out at Bell Helicopter Co ending operation of the nations largest helicopter maker for Vietnam War. The Wheatfield New York Aerosystems plant also closed while workers weigh rejection of a new contract though Bell said facilities would remain closed until further notice. Government intervention could occur if the stoppage lasts beyond 48 hours.
Funeral services were held in Wichita Falls for Wilma Glass 42 native of Childress sister of Winnie Hudson Estelline and wife of a Wichita Falls resident A car crash near Waurika Oklahoma left an unidentified man dead and Glass dies from injuries. Survivors include husband Randy Ewing a daughter Renee Underwood mother Mary E Holmes and ten sisters from Wichita Falls and surrounding towns.
Local firefighters extinguished a small grass fire about 2 p.m. Sunday in the 500 block of Avenue A Northwest near the railroad right of way.

Paulyne Day Rutledge Sr., daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas E Rutledge Sr of Childress, earned a Master of Arts in Teaching at New Mexico State University during the May 31 commencement.
