North Vietnamese and Viet Cong shelled 102 targets in South Vietnam and launched four infantry charges on U S bases near Saigon in a surge ahead of the Midway summit. Allied reports tallied 265 Communist deaths and American losses of 12 killed and 53 wounded across Saigon and outlying areas.
UPI reports Judge Joe Ingraham ordered new evidence on a wiretapped Cassius Clay King Jr. dialogue and recessed a hearing on Clay’s draft evasion conviction while denying a 30 day delay to study FBI summaries.
United Press International reports six Arab guerrillas and one Israeli killed in three clashes. In Cairo an Al Ahram editor predicts a new Middle East war before the third anniversary of the 1967 conflict. Rockets hit kibbutzim as Egyptian artillery shells Israeli positions near the Suez Canal.
Six recovery teams battled dense fog on Three Peak Hill to collect 79 bodies from a Mexicana Airlines 727 crash in Monterrey. The scene showed bodies hanging in trees and scattered belongings over a mile and a half square, with many unrecognizable.
President Nixon plans to meet South Vietnam's Nguyen Van Thieu at the Midway Islands on Sunday as Henry Kissinger arrives in California. He aims to reduce American troop levels on his terms, despite growing criticism in Washington and abroad.
Cmdr McLemore said the Evans hit by the Australian carrier Melbourne in the South China Sea. Reliable sources claim the Evans was at fault for not heeding Melbourne commands to change course. Seventy four sailors died as the bow sank two minutes after impact.
In Mexia Texas authorities recount a funeral for Kathy Jones 17 as six 11th grade students carried her coffin to the gravesite. Sheriff Conner Spivey says the killer who admits stabbing Jones 18 times will be questioned about other sex crimes in Texas and Oklahoma including the Dallas case of Barbara Ann Bryan 16 found strangled in the Trinity River.
An open playday for youths under 19 starts at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Old Settlers Arena. The event, run by Childress County 4-H Council, features junior and senior divisions with entries of $1 per event. Ribbons prize 1st to 6th. a high point and event trophies awarded.

John Kirk Ball 17 died from injuries in a one car crash on U S Highway 83 near Childress. An honor graduate and top senior, he was survived by parents Mr and Mrs George Truitt Ball siblings Suzy and Bryan Houston Ball grandparents Clyde Sherwood and J H Ball plus great grandmother H E Sherwood. Burial at Childress Cemetery.
The French runoff campaign starts as Pompidou holds a lead of 58 percent to 42 for Poher per an Le Figaro poll. Poher plans to officially launch his bid Monday while Pompidou camps in the countryside urging supporters not to be complacent.

Survived by wife, three brothers Frank Nugent Hamilton Dublin Joe Hamilton Odessa and three sisters Lucy Emma Hamilton Dublin Zelma Williams Dallas.
